Just before inking a deal to put Chevrolet logos on English soccer fields, General Motors came from what seemed like left field to fire the executive who had put the sponsorship together. Joel Ewanick, GM’s former chief marketing officer, had caught heat recently for ending GM’s Facebook advertising and saying GM wouldn’t run a spot in next year’s Super Bowl. That heat led to Ewanick’s departure from Chevrolet last week.
But why dwell on old news? GM didn’t, and wasted no time in appointing an interim CMO, the current VP of sales and service, Alan Batey. We, in turn, wasted no time in harassing General Motors for an interview with Mr. Batey.
