Mercedes-Benz Prices Updated 2013 SLS AMG GT at $202,505, Roadster at $209,005

Mercedes-Benz went Daft Punk on the SLS AMG when revising it for 2013: Now called the SLS AMG GT, we found the updated car harder, better, faster, and stronger during our first drive in Germany. Today, Mercedes announced that the SLS GT coupe and roadster will be priced $9900 higher than they were last year. That means the coupe will begin at $202,505, while the roofless version will start at $209,005. (Both prices include destination fees and gas-guzzler penalties.)

The upgrades from the 2012 to 2013 aren’t insignificant, with horsepower upped by 20 to 583, a new adaptive suspension, and an updated transmission. All of the items on the SLS’s options sheet have been reduced in price, many by several thousand dollars. A new Designo interior is now available, kitting out the SLS’s cabin in the expected array of indulgent leathers and woods.

Dealers will begin to stock the SLS AMG GT—to the extent that sometimes cars aren’t sold before they arrive—soon. A $10K price hike won’t push the SLS out of its current market sweet spot above the BMW M6 and SL63 AMG but somewhat below the Lamborghini Gallardo. Combine that with the theater of its gullwing doors and volcanic exhaust, its unique styling, its everyday livability, and the ease of servicing one at Mercedes-Benz dealerships, and M-B has cracked the formula for a successful halo car. To wit: SLS sales were up 57 percent during the first 10 months of 2012, and it outsold the entire Lamborghini brand almost two to one. There’s nothing daft about that.
