Announcements on the remaining eight cities that will form the calendar for the inaugural FIA Formula E Championship will begin next month, according to Formula E Holdings CEO Alejandro Agag.
Speaking at the launch of the Rome street race, Agag told AUTOSPORT that the majority of the other eight races that will join the Italian capital and Rio di Janeiro are already sorted, and that a string of announcements should be expected to kick start in January.
“We have them all, practically,” he said. “But each mayor wants to make own announcement, like we have done in Rome.
“So we will be making the announcements probably once a month, or maybe a couple of times per month, from January onwards. I would say we have already 90 percent of the cities that we will race in for 2014.
“We only signed with the FIA three months ago, and we have been working flat-out, but I am very happy where things are going. There are all sorts of elements coming together, such as the interest from sponsors.
“That’s growing exponentially, because the sustainability aspect of this championship brings something very unique to potential sponsors.”
Agag added that signing Rome was a crucial step in the all-electric category’s development.
“It’s the first time we’ve announced a big city in Europe, and that’s a big element for us,” he said.
“Of course we will have more, and we are talking to more cities, but these images will go all over the world, and Rome is iconic.
“To see the car going around on streets offered to us by this city – which are some of the most historic in the world – is really, really important for us. Seeing Rome and the car together, that’s a unique and iconic symbol.”
