Esteban Gutierrez will stand in for Sergio Perez in first practice for the Indian Grand Prix, Sauber has confirmed.
Perez has been struggling with illness, and on Thursday elected to skip his media commitments and return to his hotel early to rest.
Sauber felt it better Perez sat out the opening session in order to aid his recovery however, leading to the confirmation that reserve driver Gutierrez will assume control.
Perez says he is ready to take over for the rest of the weekend, explaining that it was the team’s decision for him to skip first practice.
“Thanks to all I’m ready to do the weekend after practice 1,” he tweeted.
“The team decide not to do practice 1 with me, looking forward for a good weekend.”
While Gutierrez has tested in F1 several times, first practice will represent his first competitive outing.
