Line Grapefruit is a tricky Flash "path" game

linegrapefruit
Okay, see that snaking line coming in from the right on the screenshot? That's you. And see those large round circles? Those are supposedly grapefruits, only they won't sit still - they keep moving up and down and cutting across your path. And if you touch one, you die!

That's what you have to deal with in Line Grapefruit. But that's not all - you're also on a time limit. In fact, you have a very limited amount of time to make it through the "path" (for lack of a better word). You need to snake your way through the winding trail without touching anything. The good news is that a grapefruit only kills you if it touches the end of the line - once you've made it past the grapefruit, nothing happens if it crosses the path you've made.

This is not an easy game, but it's quite unique - I can't recall seeing another game quite like it.

Are You As Excited to Wear Animatronic Cat Ears as I Am? [Video]

The Neccomimi ears—an animatronic headband controlled through the power of your mind—that we first covered last year are finally coming to America! Designed and built by Neurowear, a Japanese fashion electronics company, the ears respond to their wearers emotions, perking up and flopping over depend on your mood. They will retail for $100 and be avialable at Comicon and through the Neurowear website. These are obviously quite awesome but what I want to know is, would you wear them? You know—in public? IRL: Bose SoundLink, DropCopy and Worldmate Gold

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we're using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

Happy Friday, folks. This week in real life, Brian invests in the Bose SoundLink after his pet rabbit destroyed his previous setup (no, really), while our own Andy Bowen explains why he'd rather use the DropCopy app than DropBox, much less AirDrop. And Darren, who racked up frequent flier miles this week traveling out to Google I/O, details the virtues of Worldmate over TripIt. Bunnies! Apps versus apps versus more apps. All that, just past the break.

Google Currents to be part of Jelly Bean OTA for Nexus devices

Android Central

As you'll know if you've been following our Google I/O coverage, Google Currents will ship on the Nexus 7 tablet when it launches next month. But now it's been revealed that Google's digital magazine app will also be part of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OTA that'll be sent to ICS-running Nexus devices around the same time. An email sent to currents partners today indicate that Currents' user base is set to increase significantly as it goes from an optional app on the Play Store to a part of the core collection of Google apps. As such, we'd also expect to see Currents shipping out on future Google-certified Jelly Bean devices, as it becomes a more established member of the Google apps family.

If you're using Currents, be sure to add Android Central to your library today.

Can Stereomood, the Emotion-Based Playlister, Make Me Angry? [Video]

The details often vary, but most streaming radio apps function in the same general way - cue up an artist station, start giving feedback in the form of "likes" and "dislikes," and let the app respond by giving you music that fits the profile of what you've told it you're into. The technology behind the scenes varies from app to app, but that's the basic idea. More »

Cueboy Quest is an adorable 8-bit style physics game

cueboyquest
Yes, that's right, I said adorable. Because Cueboy Quest really is!

You play an 8-bit cowboy whose goal on each level is to get to the door (and thus to the next level), but the door is often locked. To get it to open, you must shoot at one or more targets, and those targets aren't always in your line of sight. For example, on one level the the target is a balloon which is stuck all the way at the other end of the screen. You must first nudge it free, and then watch it float up and try to shoot it before it floats clear off the screen. Your bullets are chunky pixels that have some weight - the have arcing trajectories, so you don't always hit exactly where you aim.

There's another level where you must jump on the balloon as it floats up, use it as a platform to get to the other end of the screen, and then turn to shoot it very quickly before it flies away. Each level is very short, and most of them are quite easy. And not only are the graphics 8-bit blocky, but they're large too. Simply beautiful!

Microsoft trumpets Windows Phone 7 numbers on first birthday

windows phone 7
Happy first birthday, Windows Phone 7! One year on, and the fledgling mobile operating system has 36,000 active developers in its AppHub community, 1.5 million downloads of its Developer Tools, and 11,500 apps in its Marketplace.

Microsoft is quick to take a couple shots at competitors' app stores, beating its chest about not re-counting tanslations of an app or "lite" apps, "increasing tonnage" by supporting apps from other mobile platforms, and not listing wallpapers as a category.

That's all fine and dandy, but we spend a lot of time sifting through WP7 app feeds -- and we're still not seeing a lot of awesome apps on the platform. We think a few marquee apps would've made a pretty nice first birthday present -- along with a much smoother update process for WP7 users.

Atari offers 100 greatest hits for free to commemorate 40th anniversary

Atari's 40th anniversary is this week, and to celebrate they're offering their catalog of classic games on iOS for free. Normally the 100-strong collection goes for $9.99, and even then, most of the titles still required in-app purchases. The version available now offers all of 'em for free, so long as you keep the arcade app installed, but it will be reverting back to its original pricing sometime tonight, so old-school gamers will want to hop on this deal soon. The list of included games include all of the big name titles:

  • Asteroids
  • Centipede
  • Pong
  • Missile Command
  • Warlords
  • Tempest
For the next 4 days, Atari will also be giving away some sweet swag on their Facebook page. If you're looking for something a little more modern, Atari recently released a cutesy remake of Centipede for iOS.

Hey, Steve Jobs worked at Atari for a spell, y'know. Someone, for some reason, actually paid $27,500 for an original memo from Jobs in 1974 on how to fix a bug in an arcade game called World Cup.

Free (normally $9.99) - Download Now

Facebook's Email Bungle: Not What It Did but How It Did It

For every step Facebook takes toward improving consumer privacy and information control, it seems to take about five giant steps back. The latest example is the unilateral change it made to users' listed email addresses: It converted them to @facebook.com, and messages now go to the Facebook email in-box rather than to their original destinations. Other listed email addresses are now hidden. Facebook rolled out its email service in 2010, to a mixture of fear on the part of other email service providers and approval from email marketers.

Google Charges Into the Living Room With New Nexus Q Streamer

Google worked toward pulling together its ecosystem Wednesday, announcing an array of new products and services at its I/O Developer Conference. In addition to its widely anticipated Nexus 7 tablet, the company unveiled its Nexus Q media streamer and its Google Cloud Messaging service for Android; made much of its enhancements to Google Play; and launched a demonstration of Google Glass, its smart eyepiece. The Nexus Q works with a smartphone or tablet running Android 2.3 or higher with access to Google Play. Google is billing it as the world's first social streaming media player.

Plight of the Zombie arrives with over 30 deliciously brainy puzzles

Plight of the Zombie

Although I'm not normally a fan of games that require me to think a lot, a new puzzle game named Plight of the Zombie has me rather engaged at the moment. In it, you must figure out how to collect as many brains as possible all while trying to avoid getting killed by those blasted uninfected humans.

  • Play over 30 deliciously brainy puzzles
  • Support a savory cause by helping end zombie hunger
  • Appetizing store with plenty of tasteful accessories for your zombies
  • It’s free! Some people say there’s no such thing as a free lunch. We beg to differ...

Plan your route, grab some brains and move on to the next level. If you get stuck, you can optionally purchase items to help get you past the harder levels but it's more fun trying to get past them the old school way. Plight of the Zombie is available now for free in the Google Play Store. You can jump below to check out the game trailer and grab the download.
