Da Costa wins GP3 Hungaroring opener

Antonio Felix da CostaAntonio Felix da Costa led round 11 of the GP3 Series from start to finish at the Hungaroring on Saturday evening to score his second victory of the season, and the third of his career, for Carlin.

There was huge drama on the opening half lap of the race, as poleman Aaro Vainio (Lotus) made a terrible start, while his title rival Mitch Evans (MW Arden) made a blinder from the second row. Despite weaving at Evans, which put him on the grass, Vainio could do nothing to stop the Kiwi coming past him, who then took the fight to leader da Costa.

Although the Portuguese man had made a decent getaway, Evans tried to go around his outside at Turn 1, only to run wide and allow Daniel Abt and Vainio back past him. But Evans wasn’t done yet, and passed both Lotus cars at Turn 3, before Abt lunged down his inside to grab second position back a few corners later.

As da Costa pulled well clear of the battling Abt and Evans, Vainio lost fourth to Kevin Ceccon on lap two. Abt survived a lurid slide at the exit of the high-speed turn 4 while keeping Evans at arm’s length, and they filled the podium positions behind da Costa. That extended Evans’s championship lead over Vainio, who will be gutted with the result as he’d previously topped both practice and qualifying.

Ceccon held off Vainio for fourth, with Conor Daly, Matias Laine, David Fumanelli, Marlon Stockinger and Lewis Williamson rounding out the point scorers.

Da Costa was never challenged up front, apart from the first corner side-by-side with Evans, and even found time to set a new lap record on the way to the Carlin squad’s second victory of the day. He won by 4.4s.

Raikkonen still aiming for strong race

Kimi Raikkonen, LotusKimi Raikkonen sees no reason why he cannot still deliver a good result in the Hungarian Grand Prix – despite failing to capitalise on the speed of his Lotus in Q3.

The Finn ended up fifth on the grid at the Hungaroring, with team-mate Romain Grosjean securing a spot on the front row, after finding himself unable to extract the maximum performance from his car in the final qualifying session

“We expected a bit more, the car has been good all weekend, but it was a bit more difficult in the last qualifying,” explained Raikkonen. “I would rather be higher up, but that is how it goes.”

Despite having hoped to be higher up the grid, Raikkonen thinks Lotus’ history of delivering good race pace means he can still produce a decent result in the race.

“Usually our pace on Sunday is good, and I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t be here,” he said.

“It was not a perfect qualifying but it is still a good place to start the race. You make your life a bit more difficult when you don’t make a good qualifying.”

Senna elated to make Q3 in Hungary

Bruno Senna Williams Hungarian Grand Prix 2012

Bruno Senna was elated after making it into the top 10 for the first time year in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Brazilian had not been part of the Q3 shootout since last year’s Brazilian Grand Prix, and had not qualified higher than 13th so far in 2012. But the Williams driver is now hoping to build on his position to score a strong result at the Hungaroring on Sunday.

“It’s been a good weekend so far and I’m really happy to be in the top 10 for the first time this season,” said Senna. “Q2 was extremely close, but we were able to get through. I could have done a better lap in Q3, but I’m pleased with the result and having both cars in Q3 is great for the team.

“The car has felt consistent and our long-run pace is looking good. We’re in a strong position for the start of the race, so from here? I’ll be pushing to bring home some good points for the team.”

His team-mate Pastor Maldonado will start from eighth position, but the Venezuelan felt that he could have done a better job had he not encountered so much traffic during the session.

“My qualifying performance was quite good, especially in Q2, but then in Q3 I came across traffic twice. I am happy for the team as we both did a good job to put the team near the front so it’s looking positive,” Maldonado said.

“It’s going to be a tough race here but an important one as getting points is our priority. The gaps are very close but we are both in the top 10 and now we need to push for a better position in the race. We have the car and qualifying place for a good finish tomorrow.”

Six-rotor Wankel engine from Pulse Performance

Ah, the Wankel. You magnificent, high-reving feat of unorthodox engineering. Your biggest champion, Mazda, may have left you - at least for the moment - but that doesn't mean some mad mechanics can't rally you and a few friends for a high-horsepower party.

The folks over at Pulse Performance Race Engineering of New Zealand have constructed an engine made from six, count 'em, six Wankel rotors. The mere fact that this engine starts and runs is a testament to the mechanical know-how of these guys. For comparison's sake, Mazda's own Le Mans-winning 787 prototype utilized a four-rotor Wankel. Another four-rotor was constructed by BMI Racing's "Mad Mike," whose engines are worked on by Pulse Performance.

Scroll below to see the video and hear it for yourself. The engine's sound is not what you would expect from a rotary, and if we're being honest we don't find it terribly pleasant to listen to, but it's still an awfully impressive feat of engineering. We're not sure what kind of vehicle this insane powerplant will grace (we're guessing a drag car), but whatever it is, it figures to be one-of-a-kind.

JR Motorsports Launches “Fellows 5 Challenge” For Fans

“Online contest tests fans’ knowledge & foresight in upcoming NASCAR races”

JR Motorsports
JR Motorsports
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (July 26, 2012) – JR Motorsports launched today a fun and easy online contest that gives fans a chance to put their racing knowledge and prediction skills to the test. Called the Fellows 5 Challenge, entrants will simply answer five multiple-choice questions pertaining to driver Ron Fellows and his upcoming NASCAR Nationwide Series races at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International and Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Multiple prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of each race with the grand prize being a three-day driving experience package at Ron Fellows Performance Driving School at Spring Mountain Motor Resort and Country Club.

“I wanted to give fans a chance to come to Spring Mountain and experience our Corvette driving school,” said Fellows, a road-racing veteran and winner of six NASCAR-sanctioned races. “JR Motorsports came up with the creative idea to make it an engaging game of predictions. It gives fans a unique way to experience these two races, and rather than give away just one driving school package, now we’re giving away two – one for each race!”

The Fellows 5 Challenge is simple: starting today, fans can log onto www.JRMracing.com or www.Fellows5.com and answer five multiple-choice questions based off the following in-race scenarios:

1) Fellows’ running position at the halfway point.

2) Lap of Fellows’ final pit stop.

3) Total caution laps in the race.

4) Total of laps led by Fellows.

5) Fellows’ finishing position.

Fans have until the start of each race to submit their entries. The Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen starts at 2 p.m. ET on Aug. 11. The Napa 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve starts at 2 p.m. ET on Aug. 18.

Each of the Fellows 5 questions comes with its own respective prize. Anyone who guesses a question correctly becomes eligible for that question’s prize, with the winner selected by random draw. Prizes include race-worn gloves, race-worn shoes, and autographed 1:24-scale diecasts of the No. 5 Candian Tire Chevrolet. The grand prize – a three-day driving experience at Ron Fellows Performance Driving School – will be awarded to the person with the most correct answers. In the case of a tie, the winner will be selected by random draw. (For official rules and regulations, log onto http://www.jrmracing.com/fellows5/terms.aspx).

For anyone struggling to determine Fellows’ finishing position (Question 5), the longtime road racer offered this piece of valuable insight: “I plan to win them both.”

Fellows has driven JR Motorsports’ cars in road-course events since 2008, and he put the Dale Earnhardt Jr.-owned company in victory lane at Montreal on Aug. 2, 2008. That was one of Fellows’ four career Nationwide Series victories to go along with his two NASCAR Camping World Truck Series wins. In his 10 career races for JR Motorsports, he has finished in the top-10 a remarkable seven times. Outside of NASCAR, he is credited with three class championships in the American Le Mans Series, two class wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and 19 overall victories in the Sports Car Club of America’s Trans-Am Series as a member of the Corvette Racing Team.

Fellows’ driving school – The Ron Fellows Performance Driving School – is the official high performance driving school of Chevrolet as it uses current Corvette ZR1, Z06 and Grand Sport models. Located just 30 miles outside of Las Vegas, Nev., the school provides adrenaline-charged, step-by-step programs for any driver with a dynamic series of car-control exercises and maneuvers developed by Fellows. As part of the Spring Mountain Motor Resort and Country Club, the experience is a racing enthusiast’s dream with premium amenities including a clubhouse, condominiums, private garages, racquetball courts, indoor gun range, swimming pools, and more. (More information about Spring Mountain Resort can be found at www.springmountainmotorsports.com.)

Hungary preview quotes: Caterham

Heikki Kovalainen: “I had my first Formula One win in 2008 in Hungary so it’s always good to come back to the Hungaroring. It’s fair to say I have some pretty good memories from here and I always have great support from the Finnish fans in Hungary. There’s always a lot of Finns in the crowd as I think it’s a bit easier for them to get to Hungary, and whenever there’s Finnish fans around there’s always a great atmosphere!

“Technically the circuit is quite tricky as it is a mix of fast and slow corners and even though the cars run with maximum downforce you have to get the setup right for the quick and the slow stuff. The first sector is mostly about straight lines and outright speed but then you get into Sector 2 where it starts to get tight and twisty. The car is generally set up for those corners and if you have a good flow through there you can usually gain some time in that sector and improve on your lap time, if you set yourself and the car up correctly. You need to have good balance over the kerbs so that you can attack them, build up a good rhythm, and maintain your speed over the whole lap.

“The track also evolves a lot throughout the weekend. It usually starts off in quite a slippery state, but by the time we reach qualifying the grip levels can be pretty decent, assuming the weather has remained hot and dry. You just have to keep the evolution in mind during the first practice session and if the balance isn’t quite right you shouldn’t worry too much or dramatically change the set up of the car – when the circuit starts to rubber in the car will improve. The rear of the car starts to become more stable and the track always improves as the weekend progresses.”

Vitaly Petrov: “I have very good memories of Hungary and am really looking forward to getting back to Budapest. In 2010 I outqualified my teammate Robert Kubica there and I finished fifth in the race, plus it’s the country where I won my first race in Formula 3000.

“It’s a challenging circuit for a few reasons. First, it’s pretty physical as it’s usually very hot, and second it’s a very technical track with tight sections so you need the right setup for each session on track. Physically, despite the heat, it isn’t too bad although you need some serious concentration behind the wheel for all 70 laps of the race!

“Hungary will be the last race before our summer break in August and we all need a good break. Before we go on vacation it’ll be important to stop, analyse and discuss how the season is going with the guys so we can make adjustments for the remaining races. But then it’ll be time to switch off our own engines for two or three weeks, before coming back for training with recharged batteries for the next half of the season.”

Mark Smith, Technical Director: “The Hungaroring is an interesting challenge for the engineers as it is a low-efficiency circuit, like Monaco or Singapore, so we run high downforce levels across the whole car and that requires a specific approach to setup to give the driver maximum grip around the whole lap.

“Hungary is what we call a lateral circuit, which means it is most demanding in cornering, but having good traction is also important as there are a lot of low speed corners where you need to get the car out as efficiently as possible. The track evolves over the weekend, generating more grip as the rubber goes down, so we must always take this into account, particularly during the earlier practice sessions, and manage our car setup and tyre strategies accordingly.

“Climate wise, Hungary is usually hot and the track temperatures are relatively high. They often go above 35°C and this adds to the high tyre degradation levels we see. With that in mind, this year in particular, the teams that can keep their cars out on track as long as possible on each set of tyres will benefit the most.”

Tony Fernandes, Team Principal: “The Hungarian Grand Prix marks the mid-point of the F1 season and it is always good to pause for a moment and collect your thoughts before we all head off for a well deserved summer break. In terms of progress on track we have definitely gained in pace and development but there is obviously more work to do. We are yet to really unlock the whole potential of this car and that will only come with more hard work and more time, but we are absolutely determined to achieve what we have set out to this year.

“On the wider growth and development of the team I could not fault where we are now. We have started moving in to our new home in Leafield and that is a huge step for the F1 team and the whole Caterham Group. Our investment in that facility is a clear sign of how determined we are to join the F1 establishment but it does not stop there. In addition to Leafield we continue to attract well respected people from much bigger teams who are excited about the vision we have for our F1 team and all our automotive operations and we will be making more announcements on the commercial front in the very near future.

“Now the team heads to Hungary and the aim there is to get back to the levels of performance we saw in Valencia. We know we can do it, we have the people to put us where we want to be and another week of hard work should be rewarded by a strong performance at the Hungaroring.”

Ferrari told to ignore RBR technical row

Stefano DomenicaliFerrari team principal Stefano Domenicali says he told his team to ignore the Red Bull technical row that broke out ahead of the German Grand Prix.

The FIA released a statement four hours before the start of the race revealing that its technical delegate Jo Bauer had referred a matter surrounding the Red Bull’s engine maps to the stewards of the meeting.

The stewards eventually decided to take no action just ahead of the race, and after Fernando Alonso’s victory Domenicali revealed that he had warned his team not to pay any attention to the matter.

“When I first saw the note from the technical delegate, I said ‘stay focused on our job today,’” Domenicali told reporters after the race. “This is something that engineers see and they try to think about.

“But no, stay focused on what you have to do. Forget about what is happening.”

The FIA’s technical working group is holding a scheduled meeting tomorrow, and Domenicali believes that the situation surrounding Red Bull will become clearer after that.

“We need to understand what is the point raised by the technical delegate, and what is the point from the stewards,” he said. “Right now I don’t have anything to add. Tomorrow there will be a technical meeting and this will be discussed.

“We rely on the regulator, the FIA, to make sure the fight has to be fair. If I had any single doubt that that is not the case, I would do something else.

“I am a sportsman; I always congratulate the others when they win, and I never speak bad about the others even if they speak about us. But I have to rely on the regulator to do its job.”

Huff battles to race two victory

Rob Huff maintained his assault on the World Touring Car Championship drivers’ title by scoring a third victory of the season in the second, reversed-grid, race at Curitiba.

The Briton leaves Brazil a point closer to championship leader Yvan Muller than entering the meeting, after the reigning world champion was unable to find a way past a stubborn Gabriele Tarquini in a fight for the final place on the podium.

Alain Menu repeated his race one result of second, but was unable to get on terms with his factory Chevrolet team-mate Huff, finishing a second in arrears at the chequered flag.

“That race was really tough,” said Huff, who was the highest-starting of the three factory Chevrolets from eighth on the grid.

“When I passed people I was obviously helping to make holes for Alain, so I had to be very careful which side I overtook other cars in case I created an opportunity for Alain to pass me.”

Away from the lights, Huff immediately jumped the slow starting Michel Nykjaer and exited Turn 1 in fifth place. Dane Nykjaer, making his return to the WTCC in Brazil, lamented being out of practice making standing starts as the Swedish series in which he competes this year only features rolling getaways.

The lead was contested in the early laps by reversed-grid polesitter Norbert Michelisz’s Zengo Motorsport BMW and an attacking Tarquini (Lukoil SEAT).

Tom Coronel’s ROAL BMW briefly held second place on the opening lap, but the Dutchman lost considerable ground running off the road at Turn 1 on lap three.

After several close calls, Tarquini claimed the lead as the race restarted from a safety-car period on lap seven, passing Michelisz around the outside of the first corner.

The three factory Chevrolets swiftly followed suit by demoting Michelisz further, but the Hungaroring reversed-grid winner hung on to finish fifth and claim honours in the Yokohama Drivers’ Trophy.

Tarquini doggedly maintained the lead until three laps from home, when Huff produced a sublime outbraking move around the outside of Turn 1.

“I was so sad about Rob’s fantastic manoeuvre that I immediately lost second to Alain,” admitted Tarquini. “That made me wake up and gave me determination to hold off Yvan.”

Mehdi Bennani and the recovering Nykjaer were involved in a lengthy and fierce scrap for seventh, which later became for sixth and was only settled on the last lap in favour of the Bamboo racer.

Nykjaer had earlier punted Bennani off the road at Turn 1, only to relinquish the position again after the pair had run door handle-to door handle through the next sequence of three corners.

Coronel had kept a watching brief during the action. The Dutchman was fortunate to escape a collision when Tiago Monteiro skidded out of sixth place and across the ROAL BMW’s bows when rejoining the road at Turn 8.

Team Engstler endured a tough second race at Curitiba, both Franz Engstler and Charles Kaki Ng retiring in accidents.

The most spectacular retirement was provided by Alberto Cerqui, who was squeezed into the pitwall while attempting to overtake a defensive Aleksei Dudukalo.

Muller leads the drivers’ championship on 287 points, 17 clear of Huff and 37 ahead of third-placed Alain Menu. The next race takes place at Sears Point on 23 September.

Scott Dixon, Ganassi, Edmonton 2012Scott Dixon set the fastest time in the final warm-up session ahead of Sunday’s IndyCar race at Edmonton.

After Saturday’s constantly changing conditions, drivers were greeted by a dry track and the Ganassi driver capitalised by setting a 1m16.9006s lap four minutes before the session ended, comfortably beating Rubens Barrichello’s earlier benchmark by 0.5647 seconds.

Barrichello, who will start the race from seventh on the grid due to penalties affecting some of those who qualified around him, held on to the second spot for KV Racing Technology, with Mike Conway (AJ Foyt Racing) third.

Alex Tagliani, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Sebastien Bourdais rounded out the top six, with Dario Franchitti, who will start from pole, finishing the morning eighth-fastest behind Ryan Briscoe.

Red Bull to be forced to change maps

Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, Hockenheim, 2012Red Bull Racing is set to be forced to make changes to the engine mapping of its cars for this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix, AUTOSPORT has learned, with the FIA poised to issue a clarification in the next 48 hours on the matter.

Following the controversy at Hockenheim on Sunday, when Red Bull Racing was referred to the stewards to explain why its cars were operating with engine maps that had reduced torque in the mid rpm range, motor racing’s governing body is now close to acting.

AUTOSPORT understands that the FIA is planning to issue an official clarification on the matter before action gets underway in Budapest on Friday.

This document is almost certain to make it clear that what Red Bull Racing was doing in Germany will no longer be deemed acceptable.

Sources suggest that the FIA will lay down specific limits on the variations of torque that can be used throughout the rev range – with Red Bull Racing believed to have been using much less than the maximum available torque in the middle rev range.

It is understood that the new limit could allow as little tolerance in torque as two per cent, which is believed to be well inside the variation shown on the engine map used by Red Bull Racing at the German GP.

By having a greater variation in its engine mapping, Red Bull Racing was able to both minimise wheelspin and also pump more gases through its engines, therefore helping the aerodynamic benefits that the outfit still gets through the use of exhaust flow at the rear of the car.

Although Formula 1 technical delegate Jo Bauer believed that Red Bull Racing’s engine maps were in breach of the regulations in Germany, the race stewards did not agree – even though they also did not accept the team’s explanations of what was happening.

Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner was keen to play down the matter at Hockenheim, suggesting that he never had any doubt his team was in compliance with the regulations.

“Unfortunately, when you have a quick car, it’s inevitable that questions are asked,” he said. “F1 is a competitive business.

“The rules are pretty black and white and having looked at the evidence, the data, they [the stewards] were fully satisfied. That’s the nature of Formula 1 at the end of the day. Of course, you are always going to get other teams that are going to speculate.”

Even if the FIA rule clarification does mean Red Bull Racing has to make changes to its engine maps, it should be a fairly simply matter for the team to revert to settings that it used without problem earlier in the campaign.

Pushup Olympic bus

We're not going to say this is the creepiest thing you'll see all day. After all, if the internet is good for anything, it's freaking us the hell out.

A Czech artist in London has crafted a unique tribute to the 2012 Olympic Games by building a double-decker bus with massive human arms. The machine is cursed to a life of doing push-ups for the rest of eternity by its creator David Cerny, who says he chose the exercise because it is common to all sports and every athlete from every walk of life.

As if seeing a double-decker bus with human limbs isn't disturbing enough, the 1957 people-mover moans in exertion with every press. We'll be seeing this one in our nightmares. You, however, can check it out in the video below.

The installation, dubbed "London Booster" is currently installed outside of the Business Design Center in London.

Whitmarsh defends Hamilton’s move

Whitmarsh: No stupidity in Hamilton moveMcLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has defended Lewis Hamilton after he was accused of pulling a “stupid” move when unlapping himself during the German Grand Prix.

Hamilton lost time early in the race with a puncture, but emerged from the pits behind Vettel, who was chasing Fernando Alonso for the lead and decided to unlap himself on the Red Bull driver.

“Racing drivers race,” said Whitmarsh. “He was quicker, he overtook and he pulled away, so I’m not sure what stupidity there is in that.”

After emerging from the pits, Hamilton could either have backed off and let team-mate Jenson Button past after being shown a blue flag, or push on and unlap himself.

Sporting director Sam Michael explained that there was no problem with what Hamilton did and that the team told him to go past Vettel.

“It was completely legal,” said Michael when asked by AUTOSPORT about the incident. “He came out and he was fast. We said to him that you’ve got blue flags for Jenson.

“When you get a blue flag, you have two choices. You let the car past, or you speed up significantly.

“So we told him to speed up significantly and overtake Vettel and he did so. He didn’t hold Vettel up at all because Vettel couldn’t keep up with him. So it didn’t have any material impact on Vettel’s race and it’s completely legal.”

Whitmarsh believes that although Hamilton had a disappointing day, retiring from the race late on while running outside the points, his performance was encouraging.

“It was a deeply frustrating day for Lewis and I am sure he will be frustrated for the rest of this day,” said Whitmarsh.

“But he’ll know the car is quicker and he has been driving well in dry conditions and recognise that we have had good races in Hungary and he’ll be going there wanting to win.”

Muller fastest in Curitiba practice one

Yvan Muller, Chevrolet, 2012Reigning champion Yvan Muller set the fastest time in the opening World Touring Car Championship free practice session at Curitiba, as the factory Chevrolet team occupied the top three positions.

Team-mate Rob Huff, who trails Muller by 18 points in this year’s drivers’ standings, was second quickest, three tenths adrift of the Frenchman’s 1m22.689s benchmark.

Huff enjoyed a three tenth advantage over Friday pacesetter Alain Menu in the third Cruze, but the Briton anticipated the circuit to evolve considerably through the day.

“We’re happy with the balance,” said Huff, “but the track temperature increased by six degrees in that session alone and we expect it to be even warmer this afternoon. It was quite slippery as well. I think the track staff have relayed some wet turf around the kerbs on some apexes, and as people have cut corners or run wide they have brought some of it onto the track.”

Gabriele Tarquini repeated his Friday test position of top non-factory Chevrolet driver in fourth in his SEAT, but was pessimistic about his chances of bridging the gap to the works cars.

“I think the Chevrolets are always quicker in every condition, but now that they are stopping, I don’t think we’ll see them playing any politics so much. That has finished. We are 40kg less than them here and seven tenths down – I think that’s their potential.”

Michel Nykjaer again impressed in his second day in the Bamboo Cruze. Drafted in to substitute for team’s ill regular driver Pasquale Di Sabatino, Nykjaer finished the session in fifth.

The second Bamboo Cruze of WTCC rookie Alex MacDowall took sixth, ahead of Hungaroring reversed-grid victor Norbert Michelisz.

The Zengo Motorsport team is running a single BMW for Michelisz, as regular second driver Gabor Weber elected to skip the trip to Curitiba.

MORE THAN 1000 FANS CELEBRATE MATT HAGAN'S 2011 FUNNY CAR CHAMPIONSHIP IN HIS HOMETOWN

MATT HAGAN
2011 FUNNY CAR CHAMPION
CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (Dec. 19, 2011)

IMG_0350.JPGMore than 1000 fans and friends celebrated Matt Hagan's 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Funny Car championship at the special event hosted by Shelor Motor Mile in his hometown of Christiansburg, Va., on Friday, Dec. 16.

Hagan, who raced the DieHard/Shelor Motor Mile Dodge Charger R/T for Don Schumacher Racing to his first series title, was awed by the large crowd that turned out in his honor. "It was huge to have all these folks come out and support us and have a good time," he said. "It blew me away to know there was that big of a fan following in Christiansburg and the surrounding areas. I had folks coming from Tennessee and even Maryland. It was truly special to be able to get together with them and celebrate."

Hagan signed autographs and posed for photos for well over six hours, next to the actual DieHard/Shelor Motor Mile Dodge Charger he drove to his national-record-setting 3.995-second lap and the championship. "I signed from 4 o'clock to 9 o'clock non-stop and it was wonderful," he added. "I didn't even get to eat until later. Luckily, there were still some leftovers. I was able to enjoy myself, did a lot of hand-shaking and posed for pictures."

One of the highlights of the evening was when Hagan was presented a signed Virginia Tech University football helmet by Bud Foster, Defensive Coordinator at Virginia Tech. "They gave me a helmet with all the head coaches' signatures on it. It was incredible. What a great honor," he said.

Hagan will be honored on Jan. 8 in Indianapolis for his selection to the First Team of the American Auto Racing Writers & Broadcasters Association (AARWBA) All-America Auto Racing Team in the Drag Racing category.

The 2012 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series season kicks off for Hagan Feb. 9-12 with the 52nd Annual NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club (Calif.) Raceway at Pomona.

Schumacher ‘not concentrating’ in crash

Michael SchumacherMichael Schumacher admitted he was simply not fully focused when he lost control of his Mercedes during second practice for the German Grand Prix.

The German crashed in the stadium section with some four minutes of the session left when he drove over the white line in the tricky conditions. His car suffered heavy damaged on all four corners and practice was red-flagged.

The seven-time champion said the accident was his fault.

“Basically I’ve not been fully concentrated. I was on the radio and I was doing some other changes to the car and touched the white line,” said Schumacher of his crash.

Schumacher finished in 23rd position on a very tricky day for the teams, with rain coming and going both in the morning and the afternoon.

The German conceded the changeable conditions meant the day was not too useful.

“It didn’t help us a lot, because the conditions were so inconsistent that we couldn’t learn a big deal,” he said.

He said, however, that it was worth running in the wet as qualifying is also expected to be hit by rain on Saturday.

“It is what it is, so you have to make the best of it. We are going to qualify probably in wet conditions so that’s why it makes sense to go out and try the car and get the set-up right and so on. But it’s guesswork for Sunday, definitely.”

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport World Record Edition visits the Mullin Museum

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport World Record Edition

The last time we visited the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, CA, it was to see the 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic, which was the world's most expensive car at the time with an estimated purchase price of $30-$40 million. Nearly two years later we found ourselves back in the museum, this time to view the world's fastest car - the 2011 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport World Record Edition.

Bugatti will build 300 of the Veyron 16.4 supercars by the time they are finished with production. Of those, 46 will be of the Super Sport variant boasting an incredible 1,200 horsepower, and of those just five will be World Record Editions that celebrate the car's record-breaking 268-mph top-speed run. The car you see here is one of those select few and is on loan to the museum for a short period of time. It features the same two-tone paint scheme featured on the car used to set the top speed at Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessian high-speed oval.

The Veyron 16.4 Super Sport WRE is one of many modern Bugattis currently on display in the museum, joining a Veyron 16.4 Super Sport prototype and show cars from the late 1990s including the 18.3 Chiron Concept, EB118 Concept and EB218 Concept. A rare Bugatti EB110 SS is also on display.

If you want to see the 268-mph Bugatti in person then head over to the Mullin Museum's web site for visiting hours and ticketing information. Not in the Southern California area? You can see the car in detail in the gallery above.

Marussia rules out car issue in accident

Maria de VillotaMarussia has ruled out a problem with its car as the cause of Maria de Villota’s recent testing accident, after concluding its own investigation into what happened.

De Villota lost her right eye and suffered facial and head injuries in the incident at Duxford, when she crashed at slow speed in to the back of a truck as she conducted straight-line aerodynamic work.

Alongside an investigation being conducted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and another commissioned by an independent forensic body, Marussia also conducted its own in-depth look at what happened.

And although the specifics of what caused the accident have not been confirmed yet, Marussia issued a statement on Monday revealing that the crash was not caused by a failure on the car.

Team principal John Booth said: “We are satisfied that the findings of our internal investigation exclude the car as a factor in the accident. We have shared and discussed our findings with the HSE for their consideration as part of their ongoing investigation.

“This has been a necessarily thorough process in order to understand the cause of the accident. We have now concluded our investigatory work and can again focus on the priority, which continues to be Maria’s wellbeing. In that regard, we continue to support Maria and the De Villota family in any way we can.”

De Villota is now out of sedation in hospital and able to talk to her family as she continues her recovery.

Di Resta: Driver market still open

Paul di Resta 2012Paul di Resta believes that the Formula 1 driver market is still wide open as the season approaches its summer break.

Mark Webber’s recent deal to stay on at Red Bull has prompted speculation that there will not be many changes in the top teams for 2013, which would in turn lead to many drivers further down the grid staying put.

But with the likes of Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa yet to sign deals to stay on with Mercedes, McLaren and Ferrari respectively, di Resta thinks there are still a lot of options for anybody looking to move.

“There’s a lot of talk about drivers moving at the moment,” di Resta told reporters in the Hockenheim paddock. “There are drives everywhere.

“It’s fairly confusing what is going on at the moment, even with Lewis. I don’t think anybody has got an indication of who is going in which direction.

“I honestly don’t know where everything is. It’s about seeing what stability is around and what is happening with everybody.”

Di Resta, who is without a manager at the moment after splitting with Anthony Hamilton, confirmed that he is still working alone, but that he was taking advice from various parties including Jenson Button’s management. And he added that his prime focus was making sure that he stays in Formula 1 for a third consecutive season, rather than chasing a drive at a particular team.

“You need to weigh up your options at any given point, and the biggest thing for me is making sure I am in a Formula 1 car next year,” he said. “We are only halfway through the season, and I am trying to get the best results for Force India.

“There’s still two [race] weekends to go and I believe [after] that is the time when you start to make sure you are putting yourself in the right places and making sure you know what you are doing.

“It is a crucial decision. I’ll need to decide pretty quickly what way I want to go. It’s in the background and I’m dealing with it when I’ve got time.”

Official: Porsche recalls select 2012 Panamera, Cayenne models over turbo fractures

A potentially defective turbine wheel in the turbochargers of 2011 and 2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo and Turbo S models and the 2012 Porsche Cayenne Turbo has led to a recall. There are 270 units affected among the three models, with a casting defect being cited as the cause of the trouble. The issue could lead to a fracture in the turbocharger itself, which could then lead to follow-on problems, smoke and risk of fire.

Porsche is notifying owners this month, after whcih they can take their cars to their dealers for repair free of charge. A complete notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is below.

Rossi: Mugello proves Ducati on target

Valentino Rossi, Ducati, Mugello 2012Valentino Rossi reckons Ducati proved in the Italian Grand Prix that it is closing back in on the MotoGP frontrunners, even though both the former champion and team-mate Nicky Hayden were very disappointed not to take a home podium for the squad.

Rossi came through from 10th on the grid to finish fifth, 11.7 seconds behind winner Jorge Lorenzo’s Yamaha.

“We are happy with the result because fifth place is not so bad, but also because of the type of race: because I had good pace to the end,” said Rossi.

“That is now two races where I can stay on quite a good rhythm to the last laps, and that is very important for me.”

The Italian said that one of his biggest problems is now that discomfort with the soft Bridgestone tyres is holding him back in qualifying and giving him too much to do on race days. Rossi has not qualified higher than seventh in 2012.

“We always struggle too much in practice because the other guys are able to improve their speed and their performance a lot with the soft tyre,” said Rossi.

“For me, I always have some problems with the front end of the bike, and a lot of times this year when I put on the soft tyre I am not able to use the extra grip because the extra grip on the rear makes my problem worse.

“So for this reason we are struggling a lot during practice. With a better position on the grid and a better start, I could’ve fought for the podium.

“It’s a great pity because it would have been important to get a podium with Ducati here at Mugello. But it’s still positive for the team – we are optimistic because the pace was good and it seems like we have a better base to improve the bike.”

Hayden was in the podium battle for much of the race, but fell to seventh in a final-lap shuffle with LCR Honda rider Stefan Bradl as both tried to chase down Andrea Dovizioso’s Tech 3 Yamaha for third.

“The last seven or eight laps, I could really see them coming back to me,” said Hayden.

“I gave it everything and I really thought I had a chance at the podium today. When I passed Bradl, I wasn’t trying to defend or block, I was only trying to think about getting on Dovi’s wheel.

“The thought of being on the podium today with Ducati in Italy was incredible, so to end up seventh was tough to take. It hurts because the team, me included, deserved so much more.

“But it’s the best gap I’ve had to the front this season. At the moment it’s pretty tough to take, but whatever, I’ll get over it.”
