BMW confirms Glock for 2013 season

Timo GlockTimo Glock has completed BMW’s DTM line-up for the 2013 season.

The 30-year-old German tested for the manufacturer at Valencia this week after being released from his Marussia Formula 1 deal a year early.

Following his outing, Glock has now signed a deal to become the eighth and final driver for BMW.

BMW motorsport director Jens Marquardt said: “Over the course of his career, Timo has proven on more than one occasion how valuable he is to any team, thanks to his driving ability and open manner.

“The fact that he is now returning to the BMW family six years after leaving his role as test driver for the BMW Sauber F1 team makes this appointment all the more pleasing.

“I am confident Timo will take no time at all to find his feet in the DTM and will give the fans a lot of pleasure.”

It has not been announced which of BMW’s four teams Glock will drive for.

The Schnitzer, RBM and RMG squads are being joined by Munich-based EMTEK for 2013.

“It is very exciting for me to drive for BMW again after all these years – and in such a top-class racing series as the DTM,” said Glock.

Timo Glock“I had a fantastic time in Formula 1, but am now looking forward to battling for victories again with my old friends at BMW Motorsport. That is the approach I shall be taking to the challenge of the DTM.

“I am obviously aware I will have to adapt to a few areas.

“Not all former Formula 1 drivers have found their feet immediately in the DTM. But I am using precisely that as my motivation.”

BMW confirmed its other seven drivers last December, while Maxime Martin was appointed DTM reserve driver earlier this month.

Get to Know: David Fortsch

The driver I interviewed for this week’s article, David Fortsch, is 18 years old and was born in Pennsylvania. He moved to Florida when he was about 6 years old and has lived there ever since. He has been on iRacing since July of 2010 but has been around racing simulators and video games for a long time. Fortsch has been able to earn many jobs in the video game industry and has worked with numerous companies within the industry in roles ranging from a quality assurance engineer to a world and platform designer/consultant. He has also worked with a company that is very familiar to all of us, simBOOT, which focuses on making footwear for sim-racers.

Fortsch (left) poses with his niece.

David Fortsch has been able to use his sim racing skills and business skills to capture several different sponsors throughout his iRacing career. As we all know, NASCAR is introducing the new Generation 6 cars for the Sprint Cup Series this year. iRacing is going to release the virtual version of the Gen. 6 car around early March, and when the car comes out, expect Fortsch to have different colors on his car. The company ICHANGE Inc. will be his sponsor on the new car. The company creates shirts that have a built in mask to help prevent inhalation of dangerous materials when working on the job, or even cleaning the house.  What’s more, the Dus-T product can also be fire proof. (To learn more about the shirt go to www.thedus-t.com) So that you know a lot about David’s life outside of iRacing, continue to read on to learn more about his iRacing experience…

Q:        How long have you been sim racing?

A:        I haven’t actually been sim racing all that long. I’ve raced on NR2003, NASCAR Thunder 2003 and later titles (NASCAR 05, 06, etc.) but never really had that ‘serious’ vibe with it. I’d say I started sim-racing when I found out about iRacing.com back in 2010. iRacing is where I actually started seriously transforming myself into a serious racer and getting big into racing.

Q:        How did you get started in iRacing?

A:        I actually got started through YouTube. I remember seeing it a while ago in a video and just going “Neat.” I started looking it up more hard core in 2010 and found iRacing through a YouTube video showcasing Dale Jr. I showed up with 30 FPS and a wheel that only turned 90 degrees left, 90 degrees right. Immediately, I got hooked.

Q:        Which race car driver do you look up to the most?

A:        This question has multiple answers, really. However, if I must choose, it would be Brad Keselowski for his character and personality. Through everything he has been able to maintain who he is and how he stands and isn’t willing to budge to make a political statement. That’s just how I view it though.

A taste of things to come . . .

Q:        What type of hobbies do you do outside of iRacing?

A:        I have a bunch of different hobbies really. I’m getting into real world racing but I’m hoping that’ll be more than just a hobby. Though when I’m not working on setting that up with Brian (see below), you can usually find me driving around town or up at my local park doing basic free running or parkour. Or, I’m working out. Something usually active.

Q:        What is your greatest accomplishment on iRacing?

A:        Greatest accomplishment… This is definitely bringing back some memories. I have to say finishing the Daytona 500 alive was a huge accomplishment. What added to that is the fact that I won it last year. I’m thinking that is my personal greatest accomplishment, a side from getting an opportunity to run a top 17 DWC lap time back at Vegas. That was a good personal accomplishment.

Q:        What is one long term goal that you hope to still accomplish in iRacing?

A:        I’d honestly like to be able to hone my driver skill enough and find an engineer to help me make it to the DWC series. Not so much for the chance at $10,000 but to be able to say that dedication and passion does in fact get you places. I’ve had success outside of iRacing through dedication and passion; I think it’d be neat to be able to showcase it in iRacing.

“I’ve had success outside of iRacing through dedication and passion; I think it’d be neat to be able to showcase it in iRacing.”

Q:        What type of racing do you like to watch on TV?

A:        Turtle racing. Okay, not really but that’s probably more of an entertaining answer then the real one… I don’t like to watch a lot of racing on TV, the same goes with sports. I’d much rather be out there actually doing them then watching them. It is definitely a different story for being there.

Q:        Are you doing any real world racing?

A:        Yes, I have had an amazing opportunity to take part in a real world racing team from the ground-up. Thanks to fellow iRacer, Brian E Harper, I’m going to be making a real world racing debut sometime in March, maybe even sooner. I’ll be running under the team name of H&F Motorsports and if you want to see how an iRacing.com addict does in the real world in a “Mini Stock” follow us on Twitter: @HFMotorsports.

Q:        How do you think your fellow iRacers see you?

A:        It really depends on who you ask. I can tell you there are numerous people out there who completely despise me and can’t believe you did an article on me. Then if you ask the guys who actually know me, I’d probably say they see me as a caring person. Someone who is willing to help teach them something, or learn from them. You’d have to honestly ask them how they view me, but that’s just what I’ve gathered.

Q:        Who is David Fortsch outside of iRacing?

A:        Who am I? That’s a good question that I haven’t really answered myself. I could say I’m a very dark-humored person who enjoys working in a business environment. I’ve dedicated a good portion of my life to gain better knowledge to further any careers I might have. I’m a passionate sim-racer, passionate wanna-be racer and just generally a business-savvy person. I’ll put people ahead of me even when they don’t necessarily need it and I’m not afraid to give things forward. I wouldn’t be where I am without the help of some pretty awesome people in iRacing and even in the real world.

Today’s Trans-Am: Continental Tires Series Starts 2012 Road-Racing Season with a Mustang Win

Continental Tires Series Starts 2012 Road Racing Season with a Mustang Win

Make no mistake, the original Trans-Am series deserves the heady reputation it earned in the early 1970s for fender-to-fender action, but you should know we now have the Continental Tire Series and it’s just as exciting. Okay, this Trans-Am remix might not have the big-name drivers, like Mark Donohue, Parnelli Jones or Sam Posey, but the field makes up for it with tough racing. Better yet, the field is filled with some of our favorite cars: Mustangs, Camaros, BMW M3s, and Aston Martins in the GS field. Move to the ST machines and its Honda Civics, Mazda MX-5s and MazdaSpeed3s, Porsche Boxsters, Nissan Altimas, and BMW 328s.

Continental Tires Series Starts 2012 Road Racing Season with a Mustang Win

This weekend is the first race of the season and from the green flag it looked as though the Aston Martins—one starting from the pole—had the measure of the GS class, but the Stevenson-entered Camaro GS.R hounded it, as did the Rum Bum Porsche 997. In fact, the trio of Astons stayed in the top six right to the end, but it was the Mustang Boss 302 R of Jack Roush’s team, his son, Jack Jr., teaming with Billy Johnson that finally had the lead when the checkered flag came out, the Rum Bum Porsche 997 in second, and an Aston finishing out the GS podium.

In the ST class, the Hondas beat on the Mazdas, the Porsche Boxsters, the BMWs and the Volkswagen Jettas. And what won? A Nissan Altima Coupe, followed by a BMW 128i and a Civic Si.

Continental Tires Series Starts 2012 Road Racing Season with a Mustang Win

Here’s the rest of the series’ schedule for 2013:

March 2: Circuit of the Americas
April 6: Barber Motorsports Park
April 20: Road Atlanta
June 15: Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
June 29: Watkins Glen International
July 26: Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Aug. 10: Road America
Aug. 17: Kansas Speedway
Sept. 8: Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca

1986 Suzuki Samurai

Shifter No. 113

On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. The first commenter to correctly identify it as a 1986 Suzuki Samurai was Matt Hadden, who will receive a Save the Manuals button and sticker as a reward.

These Samurai photos are from Suzuki’s 1986 press materials for the little SUV. We previewed the Samurai in our November 1985 issue, noting at the time that the SUV was more of an economy car with charm and a sense of adventure than an all-out Jeep competitor. Still, the Samurai came with a low-range transfer case, significant ground clearance, and steep approach and departure angles of 48 and 39 degrees. Power came from a 1.3-liter four-cylinder making a puny 63 horsepower—but that was reasonably sufficient given the Samurai only weighed a little over 2100 pounds. 1986 Suzuki Samurai interior

German GP future in the balance

German GP F1The future of the German Grand Prix appears to be hanging in the balance after Bernie Ecclestone revealed on Monday that he had ended negotiations with the Nurburgring over the 2013 event.

The Nurburgring was supposed to host this year’s event as part of an alternation plan agreed with Hockenheim, but financial problems at the venue meant there was no guarantee it could fund the race.

Following weeks of talks to try to agree terms, Ecclestone has now indicated that a deal does not look like happening.

Speaking to German publication Spiegel, Ecclestone said: “After due consideration of their proposal we believe it is regrettably not financially acceptable, so we have terminated our negotiations.”

The German GP’s fate may now rest on Ecclestone sorting out a deal with Hockenheim, which hosted last year’s race.

Should that plan not come off, then the F1 calendar could be reduced to just 18 races – with plans for a 20th event having not reached fruition.

Turkey, Austria and Portugal were all linked with that vacant slot – which has been pencilled in for July 21 – but there has been no indication of a venue getting the green light.

If Germany does not take place, then it means there will be just one race – the Hungarian GP on July 28 – between the British GP on June 30 and the Belgian GP on August 25.

28 Lanes, 8.5 Minutes to Cross — Is This America’s Worst Intersection?

Earlier this month, two pedestrians were severely injured trying to cross Route 355 and Shady Grove Road in Rockville, Maryland. So Ben Ross at Greater Greater Washington went out to investigate.

It took Greater Greater Washington writer Ben Ross more than eight minutes to cross Route 355 and Shady Grove Road in Rockville, Maryland. Image: Greater Greater Washington

It ended up being quite the adventure. Ross documented his attempt to cross this monstrosity on foot, and it took him a remarkable eight-and-a-half minutes:

There is no crosswalk across the south side of the intersection (because there’s a traffic light here, there’s no unmarked crosswalk). Therefore, I had to wait for the walk signal to cross the 9 lanes of Shady Grove Road. The wait was substantial, because this is a slow light; the signal cycle is 2½ minutes.

When I reached the next traffic island at D, I found a “beg button“—a button that you press to get a walk signal. Cars made left turns for a little while, the through lanes began to move, and I got my signal to proceed across the 8 lanes of Route 355. The walk and flashing don’t-walk phases, together, lasted 23 seconds.

I walk briskly, so I was able to finish the 104-foot crossing before the signal became a solid don’t-walk. But a slower, and strictly law-abiding, pedestrian would have had to stop in the median. There is no beg button in the median, so they would have had to wait—who knows how long—until another pedestrian came along who follows traffic rules so punctiliously that they bother to push beg buttons.

Having finally reached point E, I had to wait again for a walk signal. This time I had 10 lanes to cross, but here there is a long green that gives you plenty of time. Finally, I walked along the sidewalk from F to G, and after 8½ minutes I arrived at the southbound bus stop.

What do you think? Got any other contenders for America’s worst intersection? Send them our way.

Elsewhere on the Network today: Copenhagenize relays how the city’s conscientious snow removal efforts make winter bike commuting a low-stress affair. Streets.mn offers three ways to improve pedestrian safety without changing street design. And Urban Cincy reports that Cincinnati’s transit system has seen a 4.2 percent jump in ridership in part because of successful partnerships with local universities.

It’s Official: LaHood Is Out

Should I stay or should I go? LaHood decides to go. Photo: FoxNews

After a few false alarms, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has finally come out and said it: He’s leaving the administration.

In a letter sent to U.S. DOT staff and contractors this morning, he listed the accomplishments of the last four years:

We have put safety front and center with the Distracted Driving Initiative and a rule to combat pilot fatigue that was decades in the making.  We have made great progress in improving the safety of our transit systems, pipelines, and highways, and in reducing roadway fatalities to historic lows.  We have strengthened consumer protections with new regulations on buses, trucks, and airlines.

We helped jumpstart the economy and put our fellow Americans back to work with $48 billion in transportation funding from the American Recovery and Investment Act of 2009, and awarded over $2.7 billion in TIGER grants to 130 transportation projects across the Nation.  We have made unprecedented investments in our nation’s ports.  And we have put aviation on a sounder footing with the FAA reauthorization, and secured funding in the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act to help States build and repair their roads, bridges and transit systems.

Transportation reformers would add to that list LaHood’s support for intercity rail and active transportation. Throughout his tenure he has made the case for investing in bicycling (sometimes while standing on a table), high-speed rail, and livability initiatives through the TIGER grant program.

LaHood had said in the fall of 2011 that he didn’t intend to stay for a second term, but he’d since backpedaled. Insiders said he may not have meant to make any definitive statements and was still deciding what to do. He’s told the AP that he liked working for President Obama and considered it the “best job I’ve ever had in public service” — a sentiment he repeated in his letter this morning.

LaHood said he plans “to stay on until my successor is confirmed to ensure a smooth transition for the Department and all the important work we still have to do.” The AP said a successor is expected to be confirmed by the Senate in about two months.

Now the guessing turns to who will be the next to direct U.S. DOT.

Some transportation experts have told Streetsblog they expected LaHood to step down but that they were hoping he would exit later in the second term, at a time when there’s less attention on Cabinet nominees and politics is less of a factor. Later on, they say, the Obama administration would be more likely to choose a replacement with deep, technical knowledge of transportation, rather than someone who checks the right box — a Republican, or a person of color, for example.

There has already been significant speculation over who might take over from LaHood (and Streetsblog readers have weighed in on who should get the job). The candidates include NYC DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan, outgoing L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and former Representative Steve LaTourette, an Ohio Republican with a track record of bi-partisan cooperation, in the LaHood mold. Former House Transportation Committee Chair Jim Oberstar recently told Politico that he was interested.

It’s time for the betting to begin in earnest.

‘No more excuses’ for Mercedes

Mercedes F1 2012Mercedes will have no excuses not to be competitive during the 2013 season, according to Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.

Former champion Lewis Hamilton is joining the team from McLaren, as Mercedes ramps up its efforts to fight for the titles after a disappointing 2012 season.

Mercedes has also hired former Williams executive director Toto Wolff for a management role.

Ecclestone reckons Mercedes now has all the ingredients to be successful, and said he would be disappointed if that is not the case.

“I hope these [changes] will lead to Mercedes becoming much stronger,” Ecclestone said.

“I believe Niki Lauda and Toto Wolff can do it. New people, new thinking.

“They will do the job. Mercedes have the best engine, top drivers, not less budget than other leading teams, so everything would be in place.

“I would be disappointed if they weren’t there up front. There are no more excuses.”

Ecclestone believes Hamilton’s arrival to Mercedes will make the team stronger, and the F1 supremo has little doubt that the British driver will be a championship contender this year.

“I believe Mercedes to be much stronger this year because of Lewis. He will be a contender,” he said.

“And if Mercedes are good, Nico (Rosberg) is there too. And you cannot exclude Jenson (Button) though I think McLaren won’t be right at the front.

“I think it will be a very exciting season.

“If someone would have told me, say in 2010, how exciting 2012 would be, I [wouldn't have] believed it. I guess 2013 can even be better.”

Stanaway ‘back to full fitness’

Richie StanawayRichie Stanaway believes he is back to 100 per cent fitness following the back injury which curtailed his 2012 Formula Renault 3.5 season.

The Gravity-backed Lotus F1 junior driver was forced out of action following an aerial crash at Spa in June.

Following a long lay-off from the cockpit, Stanaway is satisfied that he is back to full fitness.

“I now feel back to how I was before the injury, as if nothing ever happened,” Stanaway told AUTOSPORT.

“It’s nice to have the fitness back and feel normal again. 2012 was the worst year of my career so far.”

The 21-year-old returned to the cockpit of a single-seater before Christmas, taking part in a Toyota Racing Series test in New Zealand for the series organisers.

“It wasn’t anything too serious, I was just running in some parts,” he said. “But that was the perfect environment for me to get back into it.

“I wanted to know that my back felt OK before I was coming back to Europe for anything, and I was happy that I felt back to 100 per cent.

“I expected there to be some comfort issues, maybe a little bit of pain or something, but I didn’t feel anything at all.”

McLaren Releases Video of P1 Supercar Development Mule Attacking the Track

McLaren’s long-awaited successor to the epic F1 supercar of the 1990s, the 2014 P1, is on its way to production following the company’s big reveal of the nearly customer-ready car at last year’s Paris auto show. (And subsequent spilling of additional P1 details at a private New York event a few months later.) But until now, we’ve only seen the P1 standing still, or at least rotating very slowly on a turntable.

Well, if your idea of supercars rotating is anything like ours, it has nothing to do with turntables. Enter the video we’ve posted below, which McLaren threw onto its YouTube page yesterday. It shows, for the first time, the P1 in motion and even gives us a preview of the supercar’s nasty-sounding (in a good way) exhaust note. The video may not give away any new juicy specs—the car’s output figures and price, for example, remain mysteries—but one thing’s for sure: Even in black-and-white camouflage, the P1 looks a heck of a lot better in motion than it does standing still.

Kubica ‘very comfortable’ in DTM test

Robert Kubica said his DTM test with Mercedes posed no physical problems at all.

The Valencia run on Thursday was the first time that Kubica had driven a high-specification racing car since the horrific rallying accident in February 2011 that left him with multiple fractures and a partially severed right arm.

Kubica completed 114 laps of the Spanish track, initially in wet conditions before the track dried.

“The first installation lap was in the dry, then a few heavy showers of rain came down and we had to wait for the track to dry out,” he said.

“I was able to get to grips with the DTM Mercedes AMG C-coupe and felt very comfortable in the car, even though after my long break it meant adjusting to the high downforce that a state-of-the art DTM race car produces.

“I’m very pleased with my performance on this first day of DTM testing and had no problems whatsoever in the car.”

Robert KubicaMercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff said earlier this week that the test was purely a chance for Kubica to see how he coped in a racing car with downforce.

“We all obviously like Robert. He’s very special. I think what we want to do at Mercedes-Benz is give him a chance of doing a proper test in a proper racing car, seeing how he goes and how he feels,” he said.

“He’s not 100 per cent fit yet. It’s the first time he’s in a car with downforce and I think we have to take it from there.”

Kubica is also working towards a European Rally Championship programme this season, having already won national-level rallies in Italy.

The Spark is Gone: What’s Going On with Electric Cars

The Spark is Gone: What's Going On with Electric Cars

Last October, Audi announced that it was canning its R8 e-tron electric supercar, in development for three years, before a single vehicle came to market. While the R8 e-tron certainly wasn’t going to sell in huge volumes, its cancellation is just the latest setback in the electric car’s slow—some might say false—start. From all the hoopla, it looked like 2012 would be the year the electrification of the automobile shifted into top gear. Fisker was supposed to be selling a bumper crop of Karmas; the Nissan Leaf should have been moving in volumes that would justify Nissan’s decision to move production from Japan to Smyrna, Tennessee; and Tesla expected Model S deliveries to total 5000. But electric vehicles aren’t selling as most manufacturers thought they would. What short-circuited sales? READ MORE ››

To Canada!

The second round of the Late Model Road Racing World Series will be broadcast live from Mosport on latemodelroad.com this Sunday at 22:30 GMT. Forty drivers are expected to join the action in their Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Late Models.

The 4 Km, 10-turn track is known for its fast and flowing layout, short of slow corners, and for featuring some of the thoughest overtaking spots to be found on road racing circuits around the world. Some even claim that Mosport is the fastest road course in North America and that a driver who is fast here will be fast everywhere.

No place for slow corners!

Coming from a pole and victory at Phillip Island, de Wit leads the championship standings ahead of Maillard and Claridge, with Rasch and Martini rounding out the top five. Starting from 20th, Cardoso took a hard charger bonus point, after finishing 10th. The online race had no shortage of intense battles and off-track excursions, leaving no doubt about how eventful the second round can be.

Tune in to latemodelroad.com on this Sunday and catch all the action beginning at 22:30 GMT.

Daimler, Ford, and Renault-Nissan Aim to Bring Fuel-Cell Vehicles to Market by 2017

The agreement between Daimler, Ford, and Renault-Nissan will speed up the process of developing fuel-cell vehicles, like this Mercedes-Benz F-Cell.

It was 2002 when Daimler manager Hans-Joachim Schöpf said that from 2010 onward, the fuel-cell electric vehicle would be a viable alternative to conventionally powered cars. That date has long passed, and so have other targets announced by various automakers. It certainly needs to be taken with a grain of salt when Daimler, Renault-Nissan, and Ford now announce a plan to make fuel-cell vehicles for the mass market by 2017. But the target seems more realistic than ever, thanks to a new alliance entered by the four manufacturers to significantly cut cost and accelerate introductions to the market.

All three companies—or four, depending on how you count the Renault-Nissan alliance—bring considerable expertise to the table. Nissan’s competence in the area is undisputed; Daimler and Ford, on the other hand, probably can claim industry leadership with their Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation (AFCC). The Burnaby, British Columbia–based technology house, which employs more than 200 people, will be a 50.1/49.9 percent joint venture between Daimler and Ford as of February 1, 2013, when Ford takes over the 19.9 percent share from fuel-cell pioneer Ballard Systems. The AFCC will remain an independent operation, but it will play a significant role in the joint project with Renault-Nissan.

As reality is setting in on the real-world capabilities and shortcomings of battery-electric vehicles—limited range, high weight, and charge times—the fuel-cell electric vehicle is beginning to look like a more viable alternative to conventionally powered cars. Their range is far superior to battery-electric vehicles, and they can be refueled within minutes. Cost has come down significantly and is expected to be further lowered.

So far, customer demand has been lackluster at best. Honda has managed to unload just 72 units of its FCX fuel-cell car. European-market users of fuel-cell vehicles complain that the few filling stations are not consistently in service. But now activities are picking up. Toyota has said that a fuel-cell vehicle could come to market by 2015 at retail prices around €100,000 (roughly $135,000 at current exchange rates); a jointly developed mass-market car by Toyota and BMW is expected for 2020.

The new Daimler/Ford/Renault-Nissan alliance will move more quickly. The model announced for 2017 will be affordable to mass-market consumers and will likely make use of a common platform. Things are suddenly looking a lot brighter for a hydrogen-powered future.

Pedrosa unaffected by Nakamoto claim

Dani PedrosaDani Pedrosa says Honda’s declaration that 2013 will be a ‘now or never’ season for his MotoGP title aspirations has had no effect on him.

Honda chief Shuhei Nakamoto suggested earlier this month that given Pedrosa’s very strong late-2012 form, he had the potential to dominate ’13 and open the floodgates to a run of titles.

But Nakamoto warned that Pedrosa’s position heading into 2013 was so good that if he failed to capitalise on that momentum, he might never be world champion.

Pedrosa insisted he was only focused on his own expectations of himself, and believes the likes of new team-mate Marc Marquez and Yamaha returnee Valentino Rossi will have a far greater spotlight.

“I got asked [about Nakamoto's comments] a million times, but I don’t read the press or follow the news, so I don’t know what is said or not,” said Pedrosa.

“I look at myself. There’s a lot of expectation about Valentino and about Marquez, but I’ve been riding bikes for a long time and I know more or less what to expect.

“I focus on what I can do and I know that if I can show my talent every day and have my team with me every day, that’s enough.”

Although Pedrosa’s final tally for 2012 was seven wins and eight other podiums, Jorge Lorenzo’s early points lead was too great for him to overcome.

Pedrosa believes he rode well enough to be champion last year and was only denied by Hector Barbera crashing into him at Misano.

“That was a big factor, but that’s that,” he said.

“I think what was up to me, I did OK and there is nothing else [to do].”

iRacers Rule in Skip Barber IndyCar Academy Shootout

iRacers in the 2013 Skip Barber IndyCar Academy Shootout include (L to R) kneeling John Howe, Michael Wu, David Alpert, Tyler Clary, standing Jaime Colmenares, Jarrett Overstreet, Todd Soukop, Sebastian Cedeno, Connor Clifford, Aaron Gravelle, Max Hanratty, Matthew DonMoyer, James Allard, Adam Diamond, Andre Gomes and Javier Cantu-Lucero.

Headed by Andre Gomes, iRacers swept the top three spots in the inaugural Skip Barber Racing School IndyCar Academy Shootout last weekend at Sebring International Raceway.  What’s more, iRacers took eight of the top ten places in the competition, which featured the most promising drivers to attend a three day Skip Barber Racing School in the past year and who had little or no racing experience.  Of course, the numbers were on iRacing’s side, given the fact that 15 of the 33 drivers invited to attend the shootout are iRacers (a 16th practiced for the competition using a friend’s iRacing account).

Gomes: Speechless but smiling.

Gomes dominated the proceedings, setting the fastest lap in each of the four on-track sessions as well as the fastest average lap time in each session.  In fact, in one session his average lap times were faster than the single fastest lap of any other driver in the competition.  As the IndyCar Academy Shootout winner, the 24 year old computer technician earned a fully-sponsored ride in the 2013 Skip Barber Regional Race Series presented by Mazda, with the opportunity to climb the Mazda Road to Indy ladder to the IZOD IndyCar Series.

“This is just amazing,” said Gomes, winner of the 2009 Season 1 iRacing.com Skip Barber Series.  “I was very surprised at how quick everyone was, especially given the fact that nobody had much experience.  It made me a little nervous to be honest, and to be the first person to win a one of a kind competition like this just leaves me speechless.”

The Shootout win was something of a second chance for Gomes as he just missed a fully-sponsored ride in the 2010 SCCA Pro Racing VW Jetta TDi Pro Series when he finished third in the 2009 Season 3 iRacing.com VW Jetta TDi Series.

“Everybody knows racing is hard,” said the New Hampshire-based sim-racer. “As I told my wife, ‘not every day is filled with rainbows.’  I took the experience in the iRacing VW series, learned from it and went on.  However, losing the Skip Barber IndyCar Academy would have really sucked!”

In addition to his ride in the Skip Barber Regional Race Series, Gomes earned a prize package from IndyCar team owner Bryan Herta (who joined the Barber instructors as a judge at the Shootout) including a hospitality suite pass, garage pass and garage tour at the 2013 Indianapolis 500.

Although the Academy was a winner-take-all competition, second and third place finishers Connor Clifford and Javier Cantu-Lucero came away from Sebring with a strong sense that they too can compete in real-world racing.

Gomes put himself squarely on the IndyCar ladder at Sebring.

“I feel a sense of validation,” said the 20 year old Cantu-Lucero, who operates a karting facility in suburban Seattle.  “I have the ability to do this.  Now I’m going to go home and work on raising sponsorship . . . and keep practicing on iRacing!”

“It’s discouraging, but I’m not going to let that stop me,” said Clifford, 25, who tends bar in Chicago.  “Andre was fast and there was nothing we could do about it.   I’m going to work on raising money and, if not the whole series, at least do a few Skip Barber next year.  I can’t wait to see how Andre goes competing with all those go-karters!”

You’ve got plenty of company in that respect, Connor.

2012 Sprint Cup Champion Brad Keselowski “Hungry” at Penske Dinner – On Wednesday night of the Sprint Media Tour hosted by Charlotte Motor Speedway, Mooresville, N.C., Mayor Miles Atkins showed the area’s appreciation for Penske Racing by presenting Roger Penske and 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Brad Keselowski with ceremonial keys to the city.

Mark Frissora, CEO of Hertz, briefly talked about his company’s 2013 sponsorship deal with Penske and gave it some historical perspective.

“The Hertz and Penske racing partnership goes back to early 1980s when we were actually the primary sponsor of Penske’s Indy program,” Frissora said. “We’re really excited to rekindle that relationship.”

Keselowski was asked how he planned to win another championship in 2013.

“Stick to what got you where you are at – hard work, dedication to people,” he said. “Ford is special to us because of their people and their commitment; that’s a key piece. What we did last year is not good enough. We have to step up another level. We know our competition is going to do the same. I’m not happy being a guy that wins one championship and goes away quietly. Look at some of the additions we’ve made [for the new season]. Bringing in Joey Logano, working on the Nationwide program to solidify two programs, having Ryan Blaney be part of that – that shows the commitment we all have to improving. I know that Joey and Ryan bring some youth and fresh ideas to make the team better. They might go out there and beat my butt, but I’m going to surround myself with the most talent because that’s what got us where we are today.”

When asked about his tendency to say what is on his mind, Keselowski said, “I care about this sport. I don’t want to be the champion of a sport that isn’t as strong as it can be. I want to be a leader in this sport, quite frankly. In order to do that, I’m going to have to be vocal.”

Logano, who just joined the Penske team for 2013 after driving off and on for Joe Gibbs Racing, was asked how it felt to start his new job.

“The move is going great so far,” he said. “Coming into a championship-winning team is a huge privilege. [Logano’s crew chief] Todd Gordon and I are learning each other at a very quick rate. I feel we have a lot of similarities.”

Ryan Blaney, who became the youngest NASCAR Camping World Truck Series winner ever in 2012, will drive for Brad Keselowski Racing in the new season

When asked about his expectations for 2013, Blaney said, “I’m shocked that I’m up here (surrounded by so many accomplished drivers). Being able to drive for Roger Penske and Brad and his truck program has really meant a lot, seeing they have faith in me and put me out there. They definitely have the best people here to help a young guy learn.”

Small Teams and Big Dreams for Ford Racing – Ford Racing held a working breakfast for media on Thursday morning. On hand were drivers from Richard Petty Motorsports, Wood Brothers Racing, Front Row Motorsports, Germain Racing and Roush Fenway Racing, fielding questions during the final day of the Sprint Media Tour.

With team owner Richard Petty holding court among a throng of reporters, RPM driver Aric Almirola sat just a couple of seats away with only two members of the media. But that suits Almirola just fine as he hopes to sneak his way into this year’s Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

“I think we need to be in the top 15 in points,” said Almirola, who finished 20th in points during his first full season in the Cup series last year. “I feel like if I can run consistently inside the top 15, and we can win a race, with this new points system anything is possible – maybe even a wild-card spot.”

Marcos Ambrose, who picked up his second career Cup win last season and finished 18th in points, has goals similar to those of his RPM teammate.

“We want to compete for a championship – plain and simple,” said Ambrose. “I think we have a great team and a lot of continuity. There’s no reason we can’t make that jump (to the Chase).”

Germain Racing’s Casey Mears talked about the importance of taking his game “to the next level,” while David Ragan noted that running for a smaller team like Front Row Motorsports has given him perspective on just how tough it is to win in the Sprint Cup Series.

“You need to manage your expectations,” said Ragan, who is in his second full season with FRM after spending five seasons at Roush Fenway. “Instead of running for a championship and wanting to win six or seven races, our goals are top-15 and a top-20 points finishes, which is the hard part. But on a smaller team you’re also able to pay attention to smaller details you might not on a bigger team, and that’s an aspect I like.”

That isn’t the case for Trevor Bayne, who will be looking to pick up where Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (now running a full-time Cup schedule) left off as a back-to-back champion for Roush.

“Ricky did an amazing job, and I’ve got some big shoes to fill, but I enjoy that kind of pressure,” said Bayne. “(Ricky) left me with a terrific team and our goals are the same as his were, and that’s to bring home a third straight championship in the No. 6 Ford.”
