Lorenzo ‘very lucky to finish’

Jorge Lorenzo leads Dani Pedrosa at SepangJorge Lorenzo admits he was “very lucky” not to crash out of the Malaysian Grand Prix following a massive late moment at Turn 15.

The Spaniard had already gesticulated several times for the race to be halted when, six laps from the planned end, he suffered a massive wobble that he was just able to catch at the final turn.

With title rival Dani Pedrosa clear out front, a non-finish would have suddenly opened up the MotoGP title race.

As it was however the race was stopped moments after Lorenzo’s trip, allowing him to hang on to second and limit the damage of Pedrosa’s third straight win.

The Yamaha man is now 23 points clear with two races to run.

“On the last lap I nearly crashed, I was very lucky,” Lorenzo said.

“One zero here and the championship would have been much more difficult, but second is good.”

Lorenzo said his choice of a softer rear tyre – both Hondas chose the harder compound – had been to blame for his mid-race struggles.

“Today was a difficult race because we chose the soft rear tyre,” he explained.

“Conditions were not so wet so I pushed at the beginning to create a big advantage I could administrate, but when it rained a lot I had no tyre and I was struggling even more than them [Pedrosa and Casey Stoner].”

Lorenzo can clinch this year’s crown by finishing third in the remaining two races regardless of what Pedrosa manages.
