Last week, we boldly postulated that Maserati’s forthcoming Detroit-built SUV would in fact wear the Levante name instead of the brand’s forthcoming sub-Quattroporte sedan, and now the firm has confirmed just that. At the risk of raising the ire of purists, Maserati has decided to assign the storied Ghibli name to the new four-door.

For a company considered by most to be a niche manufacturer, Maserati is about to launch a relative whirlwind of new products. In addition to the Levante and Ghibli, the new Quattroporte is due to make its debut at the Detroit auto show next January.
