Q and A: McLaren on driver rivalry

In a year when rivalry between team-mates has hit new heights – following issues at Red Bull in Malaysia and Force India in Australia and China – it was McLaren’s turn in Bahrain to find itself trying to deal with a frenetic fight between its two drivers.

As Jenson Button and Sergio Perez battled furiously with each other – banging wheels and making contact with each other – the team knew it was in a difficult situation in wondering whether it needed to intervene.

While emotions ran high on Sunday, both in terms of radio communication and post-race television interviews, the situation calmed down in the hours after the race.

AUTOSPORT spoke to McLaren sporting director Sam Michael on Monday to find out how events had unfolded, how things had moved on since the chequered flag, and whether or not Button and Perez had forgiven each other.

Q. How were Jenson Button and Sergio Perez’s moods straight after the Bahrain Grand Prix yesterday?

Sam Michael: Straight after the race had finished, Jenson was interviewed by a large group of TV reporters, as is always the case when a grand prix has come to an end.

Jenson was frustrated that his race-long battle with Checo [Perez] had slowed his progress throughout the event, and believed that Checo had at times been too forceful in his defence – and he made some robust live-TV comments about Checo as a result.

As ever, though, since Jenson is a true pro, just a few minutes later the remarks he then made when he joined Martin [Whitmarsh] for a longer and more analytical post-race interview session with the Sky TV crew of Simon [Lazenby], Damon [Hill] and Johnny [Herbert] were far more diplomatic.

‘Fair play to Checo; he had a great race and he scored some great points for the team,’ Jenson told the viewers, whilst repeating his misgivings about Checo’s on-track behaviour, albeit clearly in a more reflective mood than he’d been in immediately after the race had ended.

Checo, who’d just had a difficult weekend in Shanghai, was understandably delighted to have driven such a strong race in Bahrain, successfully pulling off excellent overtaking manoeuvres to pass both Fernando’s [Alonso] Ferrari and Mark’s [Webber] Red Bull in the closing stages, and as a result he was visibly very happy when he did his post-race TV interviews.

Q. Did you or Martin Whitmarsh speak to Jenson and Checo about the race incidents?

SM: Yes, of course we did, in order to ensure that everyone had a clear understanding, going forward.

Both Jenson and Checo had an opportunity to express their views to us, and then we gave them the team’s position. That position is quite simple: McLaren allows both its drivers to race hard and fair, and in return its drivers must respect that trust and mustn’t let the team down. It was a good discussion, and both Jenson and Checo were keen not only to talk the issues through but also to part on good terms.

You have to remember that Checo greatly respects Jenson’s ability, expertise and experience, and is keen to learn from him, whilst Jenson is genuinely fond of his new team-mate and recognises his talent. Their partnership is only four grands prix old, but it’s already clear that they could well combine to become a seriously potent force.

Q. So do both drivers believe their racing was a bit close to the mark yesterday?

SM: Yes, they do. Checo was understandably pleased with his performance, but he appreciates that at times it was too close to the mark. Likewise, Jenson acknowledges that during the race he reacted harshly to some of the occurrences. Together we’ve reviewed all the detail – the precise content of which is not appropriate for external discussion. However, the team also has to accept that, in not imposing a team order on either of our drivers, despite our seeing on our pitwall monitors an increasingly intense battle unfolding between them, we weren’t adopting what you could term a ‘caution-optimised’ strategy.

But that’s the way McLaren goes motor racing – always has, always will. Some of the most exciting moments of modern-era grand prix racing were provided by McLaren team-mates Ayrton [Senna] and Alain [Prost] fighting each other on track in the late 1980s, and Ron [Dennis] didn’t impose team orders on them in those days either.

Sam MichaelAnd Jenson and Lewis [Hamilton] have had their fair share of on-track battles over the past three years too – and, although they caused some nail-biting moments on the pitwall, we didn’t intervene. And that was right.

Put it this way: consider the damaging effect it would have had on our drivers if we’d given a team order that they shouldn’t race each other yesterday. To be clear, I’m not saying that there will never be a future scenario wherein team orders may be applicable, owing to circumstances such as reliability, just to cite one example.

However, in that case, it’s likely that both drivers would be aware of the situation, and would understand it, or, if it wasn’t possible for us to make them aware of the situation during the race, the team would be confident of explaining it effectively to them post-race. But no such situation existed yesterday, so a team order would have had no place.

Formula 1 is about motor racing, and ‘racing’ is the operative word in this context. That’s why 100 million people tune in to watch every grand prix on TV every two weeks. That’s why Formula 1 is such a popular sport. That’s why we all fell in love with Formula 1 when we were kids. And that’s why McLaren will always operate in that way: as a race team.

And to be clear, Jenson and Checo want it like that. Both of them came to McLaren on the understanding that they could race, so they fully support the team in that regard.

Q. Sorry to press the point, but Checo said the moves could have ended both his and Jenson’s races, so isn’t that an admission that the racing between them was too robust?

SM: Well, you have to give Checo credit for making that remark, but please note that he made it immediately after the race, too. Remember, too, that Checo is a young hot-shoe. He’s 23. He’s started just 41 grands prix, and he hasn’t won one yet. He’s stood on just three grand prix podiums.

By contrast Jenson is 33. He’s started 232 grands prix and has won 15 of them. He’s stood on 49 grand prix podiums. And of course he’s also a world champion. The gulf in their age and experience is enormous. But Checo is fast and talented, and Jenson’s example is and will continue to be extremely helpful to his learning process.

Sergio Perez, McLarenBut we – Martin, myself and everyone at McLaren – are happy with that. We hired Jenson and Checo because we wanted Jenson and Checo. They’re racers, and we want them to be racers. And the logical extrapolation of that statement is that we want them to race. And we want them to know that, too.

Q. How would you sum up Checo’s performance in his four grands prix so far for McLaren?

SM: Melbourne was Checo’s first race weekend for McLaren, and both Saturday and Sunday were mixed-weather days. His pace was respectable compared with Jenson’s, but we weren’t competitive on the Albert Park circuit anyway.

In Sepang we had a technical issue on Checo’s car throughout the race, yet he still scored points.

In Shanghai he was fast, but he was out-raced by Jenson in that first critical race stint while managing the tyres was crucial. So, going to Bahrain, he spent a lot of time with us, analysing his data with his engineers. Our instruction to him was to focus hard on optimising his race performance, and to prioritise that over qualifying.

Looking at his race weekend as a whole, he did exactly as he was advised and achieved a great result for himself, while scoring eight valuable points for the team.

Kubica Azores pull-out threat averted

Robert KubicaThe threat of Robert Kubica withdrawing from Rally Azores looks to have been averted after European Rally Championship organisers agreed to allow more time to make pacenotes following thick fog on Wednesday’s recce.

This week’s round of the ERC is set to be ex-Formula 1 star Kubica’s first gravel rally in the series after his recent loose-surface WRC2 debut in Portugal.

But he had been reluctant to start unless more recce time was allocated as the field struggled to make pacenotes in Wednesday’s weather.

The Pole was not alone in voicing his dismay as terrible weather conditions blighted the mid-Atlantic island on the designated reconnaissance day.

“There was a lot of fog, in some places it was impossible to write pacenotes,” Kubica told AUTOSPORT.

“We have 20km of stages without pacenotes. That’s too much. Without pacenotes I will not drive.”

When asked if all stages that were affected by the fog were impossible to run, Kubica replied: “The first one, the longest one, was on the edge, but should be no problem.

“The other stages… one stage, the first half, was impossible and the second, like 9km of it, you could see for a maximum 10 metres.”

Kubica showed AUTOSPORT a photo he had taken out of the windscreen of his recce car on SS16, where the fog was opaque from just ahead of the bonnet of his car.

“It’s maybe five metres here,” he said. “No, even less, four metres. I stopped for 40 minutes on one stage, hoping it would clear, but it got worse and worse. Difficult.

“I have no clue how the road looks or what is around.”

When asked if he was aware of the huge 300-metre drops around the edge of the spectacular volcanic lake of Lagoa Azul, he replied: “I don’t know! The stage with the volcano, I have no clue how it looks.”

AUTOSPORT has learned that the rally organisers will now grant crews more recce time on both Thursday and Friday mornings.

The event is scheduled to start with three stages on Thursday afternoon.

At present the weather remains poor, with thick fog still in place at the rally headquarters.

Kanaan fit for Brazil despite injury

Tony KanaanTony Kanaan is expected to be fit for next weekend’s Sao Paulo IndyCar race, despite injuring his hand in a Long Beach crash.

The Brazilian hurt his right hand when he hit the barriers while fighting Oriol Servia for fifth in the closing laps of the race.

After undergoing an initial assessment at the circuit’s medical centre, he was referred to specialists for x-rays on Monday.

The x-rays revealed torn ligaments and bruising. However no bones were broken, with Kanaan describing the damage via Twitter as “a full-on injury but it will heal on its own.”

A KV team spokesperson told AUTOSPORT that while the progress of healing will be tracked over the coming days, Kanaan is expected to recover in time to race in Brazil.

“We’re monitoring the situation, but he should be fine,” she said.

Ostberg insists Ogier can be beaten

Mads OstbergMads Ostberg is adamant Sebastien Ogier is not unbeatable despite his current domination of the 2013 World Rally Championship.

Part-time competitor Sebastien Loeb is the only man who has beaten Volkswagen star Ogier so far this season.

Having won three of the four rounds to date, Ogier already holds a 54-point championship advantage over nearest rival Mikko Hirvonen.

Ostberg led Ogier on the opening morning of the last round in Portugal, only to crash out while ahead.

The M-Sport driver denied that his mistake came because he was having to go beyond his limits to challenge Ogier.

“He is beatable,” Ostberg insisted.

“What happened in Portugal was not because of pushing too hard, there was some confusion with the pace note.

“I believe my pace is getting quicker and quicker and, trust me, I am not scared of Ogier.”

Ostberg is currently fourth in the standings, 70 points behind Ogier. Third in Sweden is the Norwegian’s only 2013 podium so far.

Report: Elon Musk offering more of his own money to help widen LA's 405 freeway

While Henrik Fisker was in Washington, D.C. being grilled by Congress over government loans received by his former company, Fisker Automotive, Tesla co-founder Elon Musk was offering to give the California government money to help widen the 405 freeway.

With delays and cost overruns plaguing the expansion of one of the busiest stretches of road in the US, Musk has already kicked in $50,000 to move the project along and is apparently willing to spend even more to get the job done.

According to the LA Times, the widening of the 405 is already at least a year behind schedule and about $100 million over budget, and Musk was quoted as saying that he'd be willing to contribute more to hire new workers to help end the "horrendous" traffic. The estimated completion date is now set for fall of 2014, which likely doesn't factor in any more problems that, according to the article, have included structural failure to miles of sound walls and legal battles over some ramp placements.

Woman unknowingly smuggles pot over border beneath her car

We've seen very creative ways to smuggle drugs across a border with a motorized vehicle (including faux rally trucks) but most don't involve innocent citizens. Giving all of us yet another reason to peer beneath our rides before we travel, innovative Mexican smugglers recently used powerful magnets to hold five-pound bundles of marijuana to the underside of an unsuspecting driver's car as she commuted to her job.

The 33-year-old woman, who lives in Mexico and travels across the border to San Diego for work, became suspicious at the end of her early morning commute when two men approached her car. The men, unaware she was still sitting inside, ran to a nearby black sedan after being startled. After the woman contacted police, the authorities found six packages (totaling 30 pounds) of the illegal drugs wrapped tightly in duct tape and held in place by a series of magnets.

Police don't know who placed the bags, or who was sent to retrieve them. An investigation continues, but no arrests have been made.

2014 BMW M5 and M6 to Receive 575-hp Competition Package

On the track and on the autobahn, BMW is testing the face-lifted M5, which will be launched this summer as a 2014 model. It will continue to be offered with its 560-hp, twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8, but there also will be an optional performance pack—first brought to our attention by bmwblog.com, who stumbled across a post on m5board.com—rumored to be called Competition package, which includes a number of upgrades. What hasn’t been reported is that the M6 lineup, including not only the coupe but also the cabriolet and the Gran Coupe, will be offered with the same package.

An insider confirms to us that output of the higher-performance M5 and M6 models will rise from 560 to 575 horsepower; both models will receive distinct wheels, black exhaust tips, a revised suspension tuned in favor of more sportiness and crisper handling, and a more direct steering ratio. The cars’ 0-to-60 time is understood to drop by 0.1 second—which, based on our testing, would mean a 0–60 time of 3.6 seconds—while top speed will remain governed at 190 mph.

With the 15-hp upgrade, the M5 and M6 models equipped with the Competition package are virtually as powerful as the 577-hp Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S and its CLS derivative, and they’ll outgun the upcoming 560-hp Audi RS7. (Although with the Merc and Audi’s all-wheel-drive systems, sprints to 60 likely will be completed in equal or better times than the new M5.) We expect full details to emerge from Munich in the coming months, but count on a hefty premium over the current M5 and M6′s base prices, which start at $92,395 and $110,545, respectively.

Auto GP to race at Mugello

Auto GP 2013The Auto GP Series will race at Mugello on July 14th this year, replacing a provisional meeting scheduled to take place at Zandvoort.

The change of venue for the fifth round of the championship is a result of the Dutch venue’s preference to hold the event on July 7th, creating a potential clash with the German Grand Prix meeting.

Series promoter Enzo Coloni said, “We are happy to be back at Mugello. So far, we are the series with the most Italian drivers on the grid, eight, and being back in Italy is a well-deserved reward for a country that has given so much to our sport.”

The race will be the second Italian round of the season, following the opening race of the year at Monza in March.

Mugello hosted the 2011 Auto GP season finale, in which Kevin Ceccon took the title.

Sato: Foyt relationship key to win

Takuma Sato wins Long Beach IndyCar race 2013Takuma Sato singled out the immediate chemistry between himself and the AJ Foyt Racing team as the key to his breakthrough win at Long Beach on Sunday.

The Japanese driver’s Long Beach victory came in his just third race with the team after moving across from Rahal Letterman at the end of 2012.

It was the first win of his IndyCar career, and indeed his first in any category since his Macau Formula 3 success in 2001.

“This is my first win in a major category above Formula 3, but it feels so easy when you win like this,” Sato said. “Everything just was perfect. Just make sure you don’t make a mistake, and the win is there. I always believe this.

“I think [team manager] Larry Foyt and the whole team really made this happen.”

Foyt admitted that the team was initially unsure how long it would take for things to click when Sato arrived, but said that everything had come together easily.

“It was really kind of immediate when Takuma came in,” he said. “We knew he was fast, but until you really know somebody, you don’t know how you’re going to work together and how it’s going to be.

Takuma Sato wins Long Beach IndyCar race 2013“Between our chief engineer Don Halliday and Takuma, there is a lot of trust there, which you have to have. It’s been great.

“Our junior engineer kept telling us, ‘We don’t have to be the biggest team to win’. There can be positives to being a smaller team and a tight-knit group.”

Prior to last weekend Sato’s best IndyCar result was second at Edmonton last year, although he also crashed out of last year’s Indianapolis 500 while challenging Dario Franchitti for the lead on the final lap.

The Long Beach victory was the Foyt team’s first since Chicagoland 2002.

Ferrari not dejected about title hopes

Fernando Alonso Ferrari F1 2013Ferrari insists it is not despondent about its championship situation, after another operational error cost Fernando Alonso in Bahrain.

Alonso had looked like being Sebastian Vettel’s main challenger for victory at Sakhir, but his race was wrecked by a DRS failure that meant his wing flap would not close after being activated.

The problem meant he had to stop in the pits twice, once when the issue came to light the first time, and again shortly after when he tried to use DRS once more.

Sunday’s result left Alonso 30 points behind Vettel in the championship, but Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali believes there is more than enough time to close that gap.

“The gap is 30 points now, but if he has zero points next time and we win, it will be five,” explained Domenicali.

“With only four races gone, there is plenty of time. Don’t forget, we had a 50 points [advantage] last summer, so it is easy stuff.”

Domenicali suggests that Vettel’s performance in Bahrain was flattered by the way he was able to control his speed at the front, allowing him to manage his tyre life.

“Sebastian did a very good race, but he was alone and was able to control the pace,” said Domenicali.

“We know that when you have this kind of situation, you manage the tyres the best. We saw that in the last race on our side.

“Fernando would have done a very good race, so we need to make sure that in the future we don’t have these kinds of situations.”

With the DRS failure in Bahrain coming so soon after Ferrari mistakenly left Alonso out on track with a broken wing in Malaysia, Domenicali knows that his team has not made the most of its opportunities this year.

Fernando Alonso Ferrari F1 2013However, he reckoned it best Ferrari did not rue the errors it had made, and instead made sure it gets matters sorted for the rest of the season.

“It’s a shame and in this moment it is better to keep the heads up and not to cry too much,” he said.

“The biggest things are not positives. We have less points than we should have if you put in place the real performance of the car.

“We could have been always on the podium, and we could have added another win. That’s the situation.

“I am sure that the positives will come back and the negatives we had on our side maybe will affect the others soon.

“We need to stay focused. The championship is so long and there is no use to cry too much.”

Checkpoint Carlo: How Tax Cops Killed Italy’s Supercar Market

Checkpoint Carlo: How Tax Cops Killed Italy's Supercar Market

From the April 2013 issue of CAR and DRIVER magazine

Ferrari’s home market is in a shambles even as the company records massive growth in the U.S., China, and India. Italy accounted for only 248 of the black stallion’s sales in 2012, half the number sold there the year before. Maserati’s sales have fallen 80 percent since 2009, but it’s not just Fiat brands that are hurting. Lamborghini president Stephan Winkelmann can count Italy’s monthly sales on one hand. The cause for the collapse goes far beyond the European economic meltdown. Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo slammed the government in Rome: “Once again, the exception is Italy, where we have witnessed a drop partly due to the economic crisis, but also to a hostile environment for luxury goods which have long been, and continue to be, an important resource for the country.”

ciao bellaEven before the police began harassing supercar drivers, all of Italy’s indigenous exotic-car makers were seeing home-country business nose-dive.

So what hostile environment could discourage thin-soled Italians from buying their own supercars? Pressed for cash and tired of losing an estimated $150 billion a year to tax evaders, Italy’s government started digging around. Last winter, police raided a posh ski town and struck gold. High-end cars were pulled over and their drivers were asked to sit tight while the home office checked tax records. One in six—42 vehicles total—were being driven by someone who had reported a meager annual income insufficient for supercar ownership. It was a PR win for a government under fire for cutting social services it says the country can’t afford. Emboldened, tax cops set up checkpoints in wealthier cities and even dropped in on a Ferrari owners club get-together. The tactics netted dozens of scofflaws, including an F40 driver owing more than $10 million in delinquent taxes.

Even for the drivers of such ostentatious cars, the attention was unwelcome. Tax cheats or not, owners dumped their supercars in droves, venting to news outlets that they were being harassed by police. Come this spring, the situation should settle down. The government is initiating an automated check of tax records for anyone making large purchases. While the checkpoints targeted people who already owned their cars, the automated system should keep the small, financial-enforcement police unit busy enough that it won’t need to staff checkpoints anymore. While legit owners won’t have to worry about being harassed, less-scrupulous Italians are now reported to be buying cars outside of Italy, in cash, and registering them abroad to stay below the radar. Ferraris will return to the autostrada, albeit in smaller numbers.

Kyle Busch 2013 NNS ToyotaCare 250 Race Preview

Kyle Busch, driver of the #54 Monster Toyota - Photo Credit: Sam Greenwood/Getty Images
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (April 23, 2013) – The No. 54 Monster Energy team looks to continue a successful season going into week seven in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, coming off their fourth 2013 win at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. With their last victory, the Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) team and owner J.D. Gibbs took over first place in the series’ Owner’s Championship points, by 27. This week they look to extend that lead, with what they hope will be their fifth season victory in seven starts together.

Last year at this time Kyle Busch watched with excitement as his own Kyle Busch Motorsports No. 54 Monster Energy team with driver and brother Kurt Busch, crossed the finish line in first place at the spring Richmond (Va.) International Raceway (RIR) event. It was the first victory for the younger Busch’s new Nationwide Series team and ultimately ended up being the only win they would secure all season. This time around Busch will tackle the Virginia short-track driving the same colors, but back as a Monster Energy athlete in the Nationwide Series with his NASCAR Sprint Cup team owner JGR. Busch sees it as his turn now, to notch another win in his belt at the ToyotaCare 250 – one that would register as his fifth career series win on this track.

Busch is no stranger to success on the .75-mile oval, recording eight total wins across the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series. In NASCAR’s premiere Series Busch is the defending winner of this spring event and of all four early-season events between 2009 and 2012 at Richmond. Likewise in the Nationwide Series, Busch has posted four victories in the 2009 and 2004 spring events and the 2011 and 2007 fall events. Busch has led a total of 1,663 laps at RIR, boasting 4 poles, 21 top-five and 25 top-10 finishes.

Kyle Busch, Driver of the No. 54 NASCAR Nationwide Series Monster Energy Camry:

Another win for you and JGR in Texas, what do you expect under the lights again this week at Richmond?

“We definitely have a vibe going and I’d like to keep that up. Richmond is a good track for me, it’s challenging with the changing conditions and practice time in the day versus the race at night. But I know Adam (Stevens, crew chief) will have it dialed in. I like racing this track and knowing both Adam and I have had success here, I’m sure it will come together the way we want.”

Adam Stevens, Crew Chief of the No. 54 NASCAR Nationwide Series Monster Energy Camry:

Richmond is another strong track for Kyle, how will you prepare for this week’s night race?

“Richmond is a very difficult, but fun place to race. The track seems to change a lot through practice and the tires fall off quite a bit. This makes it difficult to make progress with the car during practice unless the driver knows exactly what he wants it to do. We also practice in the morning and race at night, which brings a whole other set of track conditions to deal with.

There are very few pit stops in the race, and long runs are common, so you don’t get many opportunities to work on it. When the dust settles it always seems like the top few cars are door-to-door at the finish line.

Kyle has an excellent track record here. We had a great weekend at Phoenix. We plan on taking what we learned there and applying it this weekend.”

ESM Wins Long Beach…with a little help from iRacing

iRacers Scott Sharp and Ed Brown finished one-two for ESM at Long Beach.

It’s no small challenge for Extreme Speed Motorsports to transition to HPD prototypes after campaigning GT Ferraris the past couple of seasons in the American Le Mans Series.  But, with a little help from their friends at iRacing, the Florida-based team finished an impressive one-two in last weekend’s Tequila Patrón American Le Mans Series at Long Beach — the first one-two finish in team history — in just their second race in the ALMS P2 class.

What about that help from iRacing?  The ESM P2 cars had never turned a wheel on the streets of Long Beach, but drivers Scott Sharp and Ed Brown arrived in Southern California with scores of laps under their belts on iRacing’s developmental version of the 1.968 mile street circuit in the iRacing HPD-ARX-01c, a close cousin to the team’s HPD-ARX-03bs.

“Every bump, every little nuance that was on the iRacing track was there in the real thing.” — Ed Brown

“Any time you can get seat time is a positive,” Brown said, “but it’s especially important when you’re going to a track like Long Beach where we can’t test and – given the crowded schedule – we don’t get a lot of track time.”

The EMS cars qualified second and third in class at Long Beach behind the Level 5 Motorsports HPD of Scott Tucker and Ryan Briscoe thanks, in part, to the virtual seat time enjoyed by Sharp and Brown prior to the weekend.

“I’d raced at Long Beach in GTs, but driving on iRacing’s version gave me the perspective of driving the track from the right side seat of the car,” Brown said.  “I also got used to carrying a ton more speed through the corners and, as a result, I had my reference points pretty well worked out before we turned a wheel on the track in practice.  Every bump, every little nuance that was on the iRacing track was there in the real thing.”

Sharp and Brown celebrate with co-drivers Guy Cosmo (l) and Johannes Van Overbeek (r).

“I’d run 10 laps, call my engineer on the phone and do a de-brief, make some setup changes, run 10 more laps, call him back, do another de-brief and so on,” he continued.  “I spent about two hours straight running the track and talking with my engineer.  We got the car to the point that it was pretty good, and a lot of the things we did to improve the perfomance of the iRacing car transferred to the real car this weekend.”

Sharp’s co-driver Guy Cosmo started the two hour race for the No. 01 Tequila Patrón HPD and, within 15 minutes of the green flag, grabbed the P2 class lead.  Shortly after the 40 minute mark and during the first caution period of the race, Cosmo pitted for a driver change.  Upon returning to the race, Sharp completed two laps before the caution flag waved a second time.  Based on the team’s fuel  calculations, the No. 01 machine needed to save fuel or pit a second time in order to make it to the checkered flag.  Sharp pitted for a splash of fuel, which was enough to ensure the ESM entry reached the end of the race and claimed victory ahead of the sister car piloted by Brown and co-driver Johannes Van Overbeek.

“The setup issues we addressed with the iRacing car were the same things we found ourselves dealing with at Long Beach.” — Scott Sharp

“I was impressed by the similarities between iRacing’s HPD ARX 01c and our car,” said Sharp.  “The feel is very similar and some of the setup issues we addressed with the iRacing car were the same things we found ourselves dealing with at Long Beach.  And in the end, we wound-up running very similar lap times.”

A one-two finish in one of the most prestigious races of the year . . . in just the team’s second race with the HPD-ARX-03b?  Sounds like a perfect weekend.  Almost.

Not every iRacing decal winds-up in Victory Lane . . .

Funny, nobody from iRacing bothered to mention to ESM that iRacing decals have had something of a “checkered” history.  In fact, from NASCAR Sprint Cup to GRAND-AM, the walls of the iRacing office are adorned with the bent, spindled and other-wise mutilated parts of cars that wore the iRacing colors.  So if there aren’t any additional bits and pieces of the ESM Patron HPDs destined for the wall of shame, that’s a price iRacing is happy to pay.  No doubt our friends at Extreme Speed Motorsports would agree.

Ford’s Flat Rock Facility Births Its Millionth Mustang [Mustang Mega Gallery]

Exactly 49 years after being publicly introduced as the Mustang at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York, the one-millionth Mustang to be produced in Ford’s Flat Rock, Michigan, facility rolled off the assembly line. A ruby-red 2014 Mustang convertible observed the ceremonial honors, fittingly piloted by Ed Salna, 27-year plant veteran, and Raj Nair, Ford’s vice president for global product development. The event also marks the 50th year of continuous Mustang production, which moved to Ford’s Flat Rock facility in 2004. Ford has recently invested $555 million in the plant, and production of the Ford Fusion within its walls will commence this fall.

Originally produced at Ford’s legendary and imposing Rouge complex located a few miles to the north, the popularity of the first-generation Mustang grew so swiftly that Ford was forced to bring online additional plants in New Jersey and California to satiate public demand. Within two years, Mustang production would hit its first million-car milestone, essentially creating the pony-car segment in the process. To date, more than 8.5 million Stangs have been sold.

Although at the time, Ford refereed to it as “the working man’s Thunderbird,” the Mustang quickly developed an audience that crossed all social-economic and gender barriers, a trait that helped it sell more than 400,000 units in its first year of production. Ford played to this characteristic wisely over the next half a century, always making sure each generation of Mustang was available in varying levels of trim ranging from thrifty four-cylinders to V-8–endowed pavement pounding monsters.

The original Mustang’s launch still stands as one of the most effective product campaigns in modern history, and you can count on Ford squeezing every ounce of publicity from the Mustang’s 50th anniversary it can. In the meantime, why not peruse our gallery of Mustangs spanning its 49-year history?

Yamaha and PETRONAS Conclude MotoGP Partnership

Yamaha Racing
Sunday, 01 Jan 2012

As 2011 draws to a close it marks the end of a successful partnership between Yamaha's Factory MotoGP Team and PETRONAS.

The integrated Malaysian oil and gas corporation came onboard with Yamaha in 2009 and has enjoyed a hugely successful three year relationship.

Yamaha and PETRONAS have been privileged to share in two consecutive Triple Crown MotoGP victories, in 2009 and 2010.

Lin Jarvis,
Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing
:

"The relationship between Yamaha and PETRONAS has been a great success, we have enjoyed some major achievements together in the MotoGP class. Now that the partnership has reached its natural conclusion I would like to thank our friends at PETRONAS for the support during their time with us and wish them well for the future".

Mohammad Medan Abdullah,
Senior General Manager of PETRONAS Group Corporate Affairs Division:

"We are happy to have had this opportunity to work with the Yamaha Factory Racing team over the past three years. In that time, we have enjoyed the benefits of strong brand exposure through the privilege of being associated with a team that shares our values and passion. The team has achieved many successes through a high level of competitiveness and stretched performance standards and we wish the team continued success in the future".

Bahrain race quotes: Force India

Paul di Resta – 4th: “It’s great to round off the fly-away races with a fourth place and a race that was probably my strongest grand prix. The podium was very close, but with our strategy we were always going to be vulnerable at the end of the race – especially to Grosjean who had two new sets of medium tyres. I had a good start to the race, a strong opening stint and we showed our true speed today, but ultimately fourth place was the maximum that was possible. We will get on the podium one day, hopefully soon, but for now we can be very happy with the points we’ve scored today. A big thanks to the whole team because it’s been an excellent weekend and I feel we managed to get 100 per cent out of the car.”

Adrian Sutil – 13th: “It’s disappointing to get a puncture in a race that looked so promising. My start was clean and I was racing Massa going into Turn 4. I was on the outside; I gave him a lot of space but he was off-line and made contact with my front right tyre. I don’t know what he did exactly but I had a puncture immediately. I had to pit and lost a lot of time, which ended my chance of scoring points. I had amazing pace in the race and I just kept my head down to try and recover something from the race, but I had lost too much with the puncture. But I’m happy for the team and fourth place for Paul gives us more points. There are many more races to come so we will keep focused and next time score points with both cars.”

Dr Vijay Mallya, team principal and managing director: “A tremendous job by the team and a wonderful drive by Paul saw us come within a whisker of the podium today. Although we missed out on third, the twelve points scored keep us up in fifth place in the championship and give us every reason to be optimistic for the coming races. Of course, we could have achieved so much more had Adrian not picked up a puncture on lap one. The contact with Massa proved very costly because Adrian’s race pace was on a par with Paul’s and we should have brought both cars home in the points. We will focus on the positives and enjoy this fourth place, which has confirmed the pace of the car and shown once again that we can race up at the front and beat some of the top teams.”

Bahrain race quotes: Lotus

Kimi Raikkonen – 2nd: “You’re never really happy if you don’t win, but I suppose second place is as close as you can get. I drove to the maximum and the car had the pace that we missed in qualifying yesterday so it was a pretty good result. We didn’t have the speed to challenge Sebastian [Vettel] today but we did have the pace to get both cars on the podium so I’m happy for the team.”

Romain Grosjean – 3rd: “It’s great to be back on the podium and it’s a fantastic result for the team. It hasn’t been an easy start to the season for me, but we made good progress through the weekend and are now back to where we should be. I felt much more comfortable in the car and the result today is a deserved reward for everyone after all our hard work. It was a really enjoyable race with a lot of overtaking and a couple of tense moments along the way, so to come from P11 through to the podium is really satisfying. We’ve had consistency already, finishing every race in the points, but now it’s the big results we’re chasing and this is a very good start to that challenge.”

Eric Boullier, team principal: “Here we are again, just like in 2012! This time around though it was much more difficult – especially after a qualifying performance which fell below our expectations – but we’ve shown flashes of pace throughout the weekend and confirmed that speed when it mattered today. The win was not quite within our reach after the start we made, but to come away with a double podium when the top six would maybe have been a more realistic pre-race target was a great performance from everybody involved. I’m delighted for the whole team here in Bahrain and back at Enstone; it’s a well-deserved result.”

Alan Permane, trackside operations director: “Both drivers did a fantastic job today. We know our car is kind on tyres so we were able to play to those strengths and rectify the disappointment of qualifying yesterday. We chose an aggressive strategy with Romain, opting for a three-stop race from eleventh on the grid, and it worked perfectly. He was able to drive aggressively when asked and conserve his tyres when needed, so we are very happy as he delivered everything we wanted from him. With Kimi we used a two-stop strategy and relied on our long run pace. Considering he was suffering from an allergic reaction before he started the race it’s a very impressive performance indeed.”

Marquez blasts to first MotoGP pole

Marc Marquez, Honda, Austin MotoGP 2013Marc Marquez claimed his first MotoGP pole position with an imperious performance in qualifying for the series’ Austin debut.

Even a heavy crash in morning practice failed to slow the Moto2 champion, who had looked unstoppable at the Texas track ever since first testing there in March.

Marquez reeled off three ever-faster laps at the start of final qualifying, eventually getting down to a 2m03.021s.

At that stage he was nearly a second clear of the pack.

It took a huge late effort from his team-mate Dani Pedrosa to get the gap down to 0.254 seconds, the elder works Honda rider finding 0.7s on his final dash.

Jorge Lorenzo had to settle for third on the fastest Yamaha. He was a full 1.3s quicker than team-mate Valentino Rossi, who could only manage eighth.

Cal Crutchlow was the best of those who had not tested at Austin as he put the Tech 3 Yamaha fourth, beating LCR Honda’s Stefan Bradl – the only non-factory rider with experience of the venue.

Andrea Dovizioso was Ducati’s lead runner again, claming the final second row spot.

Aleix Espargaro again produced an extraordinary performance on Aspar’s CRT bike.

He made it through the first part of qualifying at prototype rider Andrea Iannone’s expense, then took ninth on the final grid – ahead of Nicky Hayden, Bradley Smith and Ben Spies.

Until the last moments of Q1 it looked like it would be Smith, not Iannone, who missed the cut, but a big improvement from the young Briton got him through.

Karel Abraham will miss Sunday’s race having clashed with Bryan Staring early in Q1. The Czech rider sustained a fractured collarbone.

Volkswagen Passat Wolfsburg Edition logo

Volkswagen has just announced a new Passat Wolfsburg Edition, which slots between the base S and mid-grade SE trims in terms of content and price. The automaker has not released any official photos of the car as of this writing (aside from the badge shot you see here, of course), but the Wolfsburg Passat will be visually set apart from the rest by a unique set of 16-inch alloy wheels.

The big host of upgrades for the Wolfsburg Edition are found inside, where buyers will enjoy standard amenities like leatherette seats (with bun-warmers on the front chairs), a power driver's seat, satellite radio and a media interface with iPod connectivity. Of course, this comes on top of the already standard Passat features like Bluetooth and auto on/off headlamps. The Wolfsburg Passat will only be available with the 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Look for the 2013 Wolfsburg Edition Passat to hit dealerships in the very near future, priced from $23,495, *not including $795 for destination. Have a look below for Volkswagen's official press blast.

Chicago to Pursue Center-Running Bus Rapid Transit on Ashland Avenue

After a year of study and outreach, today Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the Chicago Transit Authority, and the Chicago Department of Transportation announced plans for center-running Bus Rapid Transit on Ashland Avenue. Once implemented, the project could set a national precedent for high-quality BRT, improving transit speeds as much as 80 percent during rush hour, according to today’s announcement.

By converting one general traffic lane in each direction to dedicated bus lanes, the design prioritizes transit on the highest-ridership bus route in CTA’s system. Limited stops, signal priority for buses, and pre-paid fares will also keep buses in motion instead of spending time stopped at stations and traffic lights (though it looks like passengers will be allowed to pay fares on the bus if they choose, according to the announcement). The vast majority of curbside parking and loading zones would be preserved.

The plan calls for a $160 million, three-phase implementation covering 16 miles of Ashland, from Irving Park Road to 95th Street. The first phase would run from Cortland Avenue to 31st Street, and today’s announcement marks the beginning of detailed design and public outreach for that 5.5-mile segment.

“Bus Rapid Transit is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to expand and modernize our city’s transit network for the 21st century and is an important component of my plan to create a world-class transit system,” Emanuel said in the statement. “We will work with our local communities to best determine how to maximize the positive impacts BRT would provide to riders, while boosting local economic development and improving quality of life for all city residents.”

Advocates welcomed the news today, with the Metropolitan Planning Council and the Active Transportation Alliance issuing a joint statement hailing the plan as “an important milestone in Chicago’s BRT vision that balances the needs of all street users, improves quality of life in local neighborhoods, provides better access to jobs and services, and makes local streets more attractive, safer and less congested.”

Streetsblog’s John Greenfield will have more on this story following a morning Q&A session at CTA headquarters.

Rendering of a BRT station at Ashland and Polk, with Rush University Hospital in the background. Image: CTA.

To tide you over, here are a few more details from today’s press release about the BRT features planned for the corridor:

According to the proposed design, a dedicated center bus lane in each direction would have limited stops – every ½ mile and at CTA stations as well as traffic-signal priority at intersections. New amenity-filled bus-boarding stations with enhanced, landscaped medians between stations will benefit bus riders, as well as area residents and businesses.

The vision to redesign streets to make transit more efficient includes bus-only lanes, transit signal priority and balancing the needs for all users, including autos. This vision maximizes street potential, enhances the pedestrian environment and represents the highest BRT standard.

In addition to faster travel, proposed BRT on Ashland will:

  • Save about 8 minutes per trip based on the current average trip length on the #9 Ashland bus of 2.5 miles
  • Preserve approximately 90 percent of parking on both sides of the street
  • Enhance streetscapes with more than 75 blocks of new streetscaping, including medians, better lighting, wider sidewalks and more greenery
  • Allow the potential for pre-payment for faster boarding, similar to CTA ‘L’ stations
  • Preserve approximately 95 percent of loading zones for delivery trucks

The four turned, slightly asymmetrical oval which includes only 6 degrees of banking would be a perfect test of endurance for the NASCAR iRacing.com Late Model Series. The sim-racer who could best manage their front tires would come out in front of this derby of a whole ‘nother beast.

Welcome to the Dude Ranch . . .

In this week’s 3120 Strength of Field race nine cars battled for this week’s top spot. However the man, the myth, the legend, Ty Majeski once again came out on top. Majeski took the pole, led every lap, and set the fastest lap time of 15.409 seconds. In second came Kevin Myers with a margin of defeat of around seven seconds. Myers managed a best lap of 15.601 seconds after trailing Majeski the entire race with third spot going to Josh Crane, who crossed the line nine and a half seconds behind Majeski.

Crane, who started sixth, managed a clean race that saw him gain three positions. Similarly, Matt Easterling worked his way from seventh all the way to fourth and was the final driver to finish on the lead lap, 15.335 seconds from the leader. Easterling managed to hang on to his lead lap finish just as Majeski was breathing down his neck. Unfortunately for Travis Ellington, Raymond Lievens, and Lewis Crisp Jr. they were not able to escape the grip of Majeski’s stellar pace and fell one lap behind. Landon Abbot and Joshua Kotten finished two and three laps down respectively.

The LM action was fast and furious at Langley; Week 12 at PIR figures to see more of the same.

In the Week 11 standings, Majeski managed to take the crown after his Strength of Field victory that earned him 189 championship points. Majeski also notably managed a clean sheet with four starts, wins, poles, as well as leading 280 of 280 laps.  Dylan Roe took the second position this week after making four starts and claiming three wins. Though he did not capture any poles, Roe did manage to lead 80 laps while bagging 174 points. Crane was the third place driver this week with eight starts that led to three victories, as well as 103 laps lead. Crane took home 146 points. Just three points behind came Myers who in seven starts captured five wins and four poles while leading 346 laps. Completing the top five was Chad Detillier, who made only two starts while capturing a single victory. Detillier led 116 of 137 laps and cashed out with 139 points.

Going in to the last week of competition at Phoenix International Raceway, Majeski holds a commanding lead over Kollin Keister, who is closely followed by Ron Hagolin. My predictions for this year’s overall points are as follows: In first will come Tj Majeski, whose week-in and week-out pace has been unstoppable. In second will come Kollin Keister who has turned significantly more laps in the season than Hagolin, and it will be unlikely he will close a 20 some odd point gap. That being said Hagolin will come third followed by Logan Sheets. In fifth place it is a toss-up between Lewis Crisp Jr and Kevin Myers who both have 93 starts. Myers has however had more wins over the year and very well could score a high points week.  Check back next week on inRacing News and see if my predictions are correct
