Name That Shifter, No. 124: 1957 Porsche Speedster

Name That Shifter

1957 Porsche Speedster

Shifter No. 124

On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. As some of you pointed out, yes, this week’s photo was dark and the shifter plain-looking. This is supposed to be a challenge, after all. Our challenge play worked—no one correctly identified this week’s shifter. The stick in fact belongs to a 1957 Porsche Speedster.

The Speedster pictured here is from our September 1967 issue. Of course, the Speedster was no longer in production in ’67. Believe it or not, Speedsters were becoming classic, collectable cars even then—they first hit the market in the mid-1950s—and we conducted a retrospective drive in a privately owned ride. We tested a new Speedster in 1956 and found its combination of light weight, rear-mounted flat-four, and oddly attractive upside-down bathtub look addicting. At the time, we recommended that the quickest way down a back road was sideways: “The Porsche’s delightful ‘driftability,’ which helps it to achieve high average speeds, impressed.” 1957 Porsche Speedster interior
