Shuhei Nakamoto said earlier this month he believes Marquez, who took the Moto2 title last year, will be able to fight with the likes of team-mate Dani Pedrosa and world champion Jorge Lorenzo right from the start of his MotoGP career.
While Marquez admitted Nakamoto’s backing is a confidence boost, the Spaniard believes he has to go step by step.
“I appreciate that he has so much confidence in me, but we know it’s going to take time,” said Marquez during the unveiling of Honda’s new bike in Madrid.
“It’s obvious that Nakamoto’s views give you confidence, but that doesn’t mean it will be easy. We know that there is a long way to go to get results.
“We will try to do our thing, but the important part is that we make constant progress and that Nakamoto is pleased with my work and he see that I’m seizing the opportunity.”
Marquez, 19, reckons understanding the MotoGP tyres will be crucial to his preparations.
“Tyres are something that I already noticed in Malaysia, that if depending on how you did the first laps, the tyre started to degrade one way or another,” he said.
“I have a lot of understand about them yet, especially the front tyre. The rear tyres I maybe started to understand a bit, but managing the last part of the races in MotoGP is very important.”
