Binder Scores 100% at Langley

After the wide open spaces of PIR, the iSCS returned to the short track environment with a visit to Langley Speedway.

Last season the iRacing.com Sprint Car Series featured the introduction of Langley Speedway to the schedule. A flat track featuring six degrees of banking and a very slippery surface for the sprints, only those with the proper mixture of practice, speed and talent can tame this .395 mile oval. While last season’s inaugural events were overshadowed by a seemingly inept flagman, drivers looked forward to the week’s races, as they were back to familiar short-track grounds.

Hot off of Week 1, five-time iSCS champion Alan Binder posted the fastest qualifying time of the week with a 14.337s fast lap. Right behind him was up-and-coming iSCS star Steve Linder with his qualifying lap of 14.372s. A total of 64 drivers entered into the week’s five online races. One thing was for certain – the red and yellow flames of Binder’s Beast were sure to lead the field to the green flag and be a contender all week long.

The week started with a bang involving David Muse (13) and Joey Mclaughlin (11).

The first green flag fell on Tuesday as a large 16 car field roared into Turn One, following Binder and Linder. However, on that same lap, the caution flag came out as the result of a pileup including Daniel Muse, Joey Mclaughlin, Marcus Dean, and Eddie Walczyk. When the field gathered itself up again and went back to action, Binder began to pull away from his pursuers. As the laps wound down, Linder found himself in a close battle for second place with series veterans Joe Quinn and PJ Stergios. When the checkered flag waved, it was Binder taking the win, and chalking up yet another impressive statistic – his 100th win in the sprint cars. Linder held-off his challengers to score second place, half a second behind Binder. Quinn rounded-out the podium with his third place ahead of Stergios and Garry Loney.

Thursday produced a split as the iSCS returned to Langley for Round Two. The top split featured the highest SOF rating of the week (3067) and featured a show of great driving and sportsmanship all the way through, as the race went caution-free for all 50 laps. Leading flag-to-flag was Binder once again, capturing his second win of the week after fighting-off the mean machine of Stergios. Steve Linder scored another podium finish with his third place result, while Vinnie Sansone crossed the finish line in fourth ahead of Michael Clement.

Binder kept Stergios at bay en route to the second of this three wins at Langley.

Finishing eighth place on Thursday, Fred Lampela exited the race advertising a new exercise program. “Had some good close racing with Garry and Leila [Wilson] towards the end; hardest eighth I have ever earned. [S]weat pouring off my head, sawing on the wheel trying to keep it going in the right direction… [It] was real work.”

In the second split of the night, Douglas Berryman led all 50 laps that were marred by three caution flags to take home the win. Joey Mclaughlin crossed the finish line very close behind Berryman for second place, and James Lamb scored his first podium finish of the week in third. Matt Berndt finished in fourth, and Brett Waldrep completed the top five.

“Hardest eighth I have ever earned. [S]weat pouring off my head, sawing on the wheel trying to keep it going in the right direction…” — Fred Lampela

Sunday brought two more races into the week’s standings. In the highest SOF race of the day, Fred Lampela raced to catch-up to polesitter Steve Linder for 11 laps. The unexpected happened when Linder lost control in Turn 2, spinning into the infield grass and relinquishing the lead to Lampela. Linder was able to save his machine from damage, and continued on to catch back up to Lampela. With one lap to go, Jonathan Sykes2 spun and brought out the caution, ending the race under the yellow with Lampela in first place. Linder finished second, and Berryman completed the podium with his third place. Anthony Roselli and Michael Willard2 rounded out the top five respectively.

Lampela finished-off his week with a win on Sunday.

The last race of the week produced another dominating performance by Binder’s Beast as he led all 50 laps and held-off Berryman yet again to take his third victory of the week. Aleksi Elomaa, Randal Robinson, and Glenn Cray completed the top five respectively.

Binder leads the championship standings over a fast crowd including Stergios, Linder, Lampela, and Elomaa. Will he continue to remain undefeated this season as the sprints roll into Iowa for Week 3? Stay tuned for the iSCS update on iRN!

Ferrari considers Vettel case now closed

Ferrari considers the controversy surrounding Sebastian Vettel’s overtaking move of Jean-Eric Vergne in the Brazilian Grand Prix now ‘closed’, after receiving an official response from the FIA.

The Maranello-based team had written to motor racing’s governing body asking for clarification on the pass – with on-board footage from Vettel’s car appearing to indicate he passed his Toro Rosso rival under yellow flag conditions.

Prior to an FIA clarification that Vettel’s pass had been completed after a marshal had waved a green flag, as first revealed by AUTOSPORT, Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali wanted answers from the governing body to ensure that nothing untoward had happened.

Click here for AUTOSPORT’s exclusive analysis of why Vettel’s pass was legal

The FIA responded on Friday morning to explain the situation, and Ferrari is now happy that the issue has been put to rest.

In a statement issued on Friday it said: “Ferrari duly takes note of the reply sent by the FIA this morning and therefore considers the matter now closed.”

Ferrari made it clear that it had a duty to its fans to follow up the Vettel controversy after widespread distribution of the Vettel video.

“The request for a clarification from the FIA, regarding Vettel’s passing move on Vergne, came about through the need to shed light on the circumstances of the move, which came out on the Internet only a few days after the race,” added the Ferrari statement.

“The letter to the FIA was in no way intended to undermine the legality of the race result.

“We received tens of thousands of queries relating to this matter from all over the world and it was incumbent on us to take the matter further, asking the Federation to look into an incident that could have cast a shadow over the championship in the eyes of all Formula 1 enthusiasts, not just Ferrari fans.”

The FIA also issued a statement on Friday confirming that it told Ferrari that it was adamant the overtaking move was not in breach of the regulations.

“The FIA received a letter from Scuderia Ferrari, seeking clarification on Sebastien Vettel’s overtaking manoeuvre in Sao Paulo on Sunday,” it said.

“In the spirit of transparency and goodwill, the FIA wishes to make public the receipt of this letter.

“The Federation also informs it has replied to Scuderia Ferrari, in the same constructive spirit, stating that as the overtaking manoeuvre was not in breach of the regulations, and therefore there was no infringement to investigate, it was not reported to the Stewards by Race Control.”

Carella's 2011 World Title Turns a New Page in F1 H2O Series!

F1 H2O / F1 Powerboat News
ABU DHABI - January 2, 2012

Carella's 2011 World Title Turns a New Page in F1 H2O Series header_banner_jan01.jpgItalian Alex Carella of the Qatar Team used both his driving skills and youthful exuberance to overtake his wily veteran teammate Jay Price of the USA with a victory in Abu Dhabi in early December to win the 2011 UIM F1 H2O World Championship for power boating for the first time in only his second season in the series.

The young 26 year-old racer from Piacenza, Italy while trailing his teammate for most of the season, ran a smart and steady campaign, winning twice from pole position in both Kazan at the Grand Prix of Russia and along the corniche in Abu Dhabi.

Carella virtually locked his title away, when on the first lap of the final Grand Prix in Sharjah, he was able to out duel his teammate into second place. The two of them went into the left hand corner with Price making a desperate move that didn't work taking both drivers out of the race and handing Alex the title even before both DAC boats stopped barrel rolling in turn three.

"It was a very fulfilling season and we had success when we needed too," said Alex. "Jay was an excellent teammate all season and its too bad it ended the way it did on the very first lap in Sharjah. I was looking forward to going toe to toe with him for all 37 laps but I'll take the championship and am thankful to my whole team for making this a truly dream season for me."

The 2011 campaign started out as if the Qatar Team was going to run away and hide from the competition throughout the full ten month schedule. Jay won the opening two events. First, at the Qatar Teams home event in Doha in the month of March, and again at the next Grand Prix in Portimao, Portugal in May passing Alex for his 11th career win.

The string Qatar Team success continued at the third event of the season. Alex, won easily from pole position. Meanwhile, Jay, racing what many thought was the drive of the season, charged all the way up from 15th on the grid to finish third giving the Qatar organization their third straight Grand Prix where both drivers finished on the podium at days end.

Alex finished the season with 84 points on the strength of two wins, two second places and a pair of fifth's and only failing to finish crashing out with his teammate at the final event.

The final standings differential Jay had with Alex and how he lost on the title, was his disqualification at the Grand Prix of China in Liuzhou.

On the very last lap, Jay misjudged the right hand buoy with three corners to go and lost out on a third place finish giving him no points and opening the door for his teammate Alex to have a chance to chase him down for the title. Alex did just that in Abu Dhabi out qualifying him and winning. Jay was third that day and finished second in the championship for the second straight year with 79 points.

"The difference between a great pass in a race and a miscalculation and disaster is a millisecond and that's what happened in Sharjah," said Jay.

"I thought I had an avenue and it closed and before I knew it, the season was finished. Alex is a great teammate and I couldn't have asked for a better team to work with this season. It was great to lead the championship for over 36 weeks I just wished I could have finished it the way I wanted to for myself and my team."

While Jay was racking up five straight podiums in every race he finished in 2011 another team that started slowly came on and dominated most of the last half of the season when their drivers caught fire themselves.

Team Abu Dhabi, which welcomed their two talented drivers Thani Al Qamzi and Ahmed Al Hameli back together for the fifth straight season, had no answer for their rivals from Doha in the first half of the year.

However, once both Thani and Ahmed hit their stride in their BABA boats at the mid-season mark, they became almost unbeatable, with Ahmed winning two of the final four events including a dominating one-two finish on the podium in Sharjah.

Thani, finished third in the championship with 75 points. He completed all seven races winning at Liuzhou in October and being a late season player for the championship with his four podium performances throughout the year.

Ahmed set the water on fire in qualifying in the second half of the season. He took three pole's in his last four starts. Ahmed, like Jay Price, finished on the podium in every race he finished this season with a pair of wins and two second place finishes coming home fourth in the championship with 70 points.

The 33 year-old driver from Abu Dhabi could have had even more points had he not crashed out in Portugal and was disqualified from running the next race in Kiev by the officials for his actions on the race course on the Arade River.

This opened the door for a special treat for all race fans of the UIM F1 H2O world tour. For Team Abu Dhabi Team Manager and four-time World Champion Scott Gillman came out of semi-retirement to race for the first time since 2007 for Team Abu Dhabi replacing the suspended Ahmed Al Hameli.

Despite never running in the BABA boat before this weekend, Scott qualified a respectable eighth and just missed taking his 56th career podium when fellow American Jay Price passed him with just a few laps to go in Kazan to capture third with Scott settling for a fine fourth.

While the Qatar Team held off Team Abu Dhabi for the Team Championship 172-154, finishing strongly as well was the CTIC China Team with 63 points. Led by French veteran pilot Philippe Chiappe who was fifth in the championship with 47 points and gaining confidence throughout the season.

Chiappe, driving a new French built "Moore" hull had three podium third place finishes (Doha, Liuzhou and Sharjah) combined with one other top five performance in Kazan. The driver from Rouen was penalized in Portimao and failed to finish only in Abu Dhabi to complete a solid year and bigger hopes for 2012.

Teammate Pierre Lundin of Sweden had all sorts of gremlins early on. The driver from Eskilstuna, started with three straight failures to finish, then he turned it around, going three straight finishes before dropping out at the last race in Sharjah. His best performance of the season came in Abu Dhabi when he qualified 10th and finished fourth. He finished the year tied for 10th in the drivers table with 16 points.

The Singha F1 Team was fourth in the championship with 44 points mostly delivered by the veteran number one driver Francesco Cantando who was sixth in the drivers championship with 42 points.

For this two time runner-up in the title chase back in 2000 and 2001, Francesco's best events were a pair of fourth's at the Grand Prix of Ukraine in Kiev and Sharjah in the UAE driving his own newly designed BLAZE boat.

The driver from Milan finished his 16th season in F1 and now in 134 starts has 12 victories and is third all time with 41 podiums and 79 top-10 finishes in his career.

Fellow Italian Stefano Paoletti joined him for the first race of the season in Doha finishing 13th in his first ever F1 Grand Prix.

Another young Italian star Ivan Brigada joined the team for one race in Portugal qualifying 12th and finishing a respectable 10th in the Grand Prix.

Italian veteran Valerio Lagiannella was at Francesco's side for the remaining races of the season picking up his first point of the season at the very last event in Sharjah for the Lecco driver who expects to be back for 2012.

Coming into the season the defending World Champion Mad Croc F1 Team looked to be solid with two time World Titlist Sami Selio back leading the team along with his new teammate Davide Padovan from Italy.

The Finnish superstar, Selio, never really got into the groove all year long except for the opening event in Doha where he earned pole position and led, until, breaking down. This opened the floodgates to a season where Sami would play catch up throughout the campaign finally finishing tied for seventh with his teammate with 21 points.

Sami, had one podium in Kiev and then had his year shortened after a horrendous accident at the Grand Prix of China. While at full speed, he crashed the boat, going in nose first and stopping immediately on the front straight while traveling at over 200 kilometers per hour. The driver from Helsinki sat out the rest of the year to rest and recover hoping to start back in Doha this March chasing a third title.

The young Italian Padovan, who was runner-up to rookie of the year honors in 2010, finished all four of his races in the top ten with his best day being in Liuzhou where he finished fourth. His learning curve will continue and he's looking more comfortable in the BABA boat all the time as he chases his first career podium in 2012.

Also joining the team late in the season was the first ever driver from Kuwait to race in F1 Yousef Al Rubayan. The talented driver from Holi, came over from F2 and earned his first two points in his first ever event in Abu Dhabi. His 11th place in Sharjah saw his tied for 18th in title with two points in the ledger books for a driver who has a great future.

Team Sweden started the season in Doha with a solid line-up of Swedish driver Jonas Andersson and USA rookie Shaun Torrente hoping to make a statement before seasons end. The two-time North American champ Torrente, captured a fine fourth place just ahead of his veteran teammate in Qatar. This sadly was a mirage as both drivers fell from a bis of exuberance followed by disappointment and back again as the season marched along.

Andersson, a winner of four victories during his six year career on the tour, finished the season a disappointing ninth in the drivers championship with 19 points and just one top five performance in four finishes. His switch to a MOLGAARD hull late in the year seemed to help his confidence.

Meanwhile, for the Peters & May sponsored Torrente, after his brilliant fourth place finish in Doha, battled for the lead of the race at the next Grand Prix in Portugal only to crash out on the restart after qualifying sixth. Now, forced to drive a new boat in Kazan for the first time, Shaun qualified a fine second place only to crash while pushing for a podium finish for the second straight event. His luck didn't change at the next event as he had a technical problem forcing him to drop out in Kiev on the opening lap.

The Miami driver missed China, only to rejoin the series with the Qatar Team in December. Shipping his own GRAN PRIX short boat from California to the series, Shaun's bad luck continued, crashing out on the opening lap in Abu Dhabi. The 33 year-old finished the season strongly in Sharjah taking a fine fifth place. His performance earned him Rookie-of-the-Year honors in the process capturing 10th in the championship with 16 points.

Also joining Team Sweden was the talented driver from "down under" Rhys Coles. The likeable Aussie who has a couple Australian titles to his resume, joined the team in China and played out the year. In his three races his seventh at the final round in Sharjah was his best. Overall, Rhys did rather well with two top 10's in his three finishes for the driver from Sydney.

Also on board was Swedish F2 veteran and part time ace mechanic Tommy Wahlsten, who, in his only appearance of the season, took a well earned ninth place in Liuzhou after starting 14th for the driver from Nora.

F1 Team Atlantic was four points behind Team Sweden in the team championship with 21 points. Led by their long time Portuguese veteran driver Duarte Benavente, who in his 15th year of racing, was tied for 10th in the drivers table with 16 points.

Duarte, who has 105 starts in his career, had five race finishes in the top-10. His best result, being at the final Grand Prix in Sharjah, where he finished sixth in his DRAGON boat built in Wales. He only failed to finish one event all year so he'll try to keep the consistency alive once again as he goes after his first Grand Prix win in 2012.

Philippe Tourre of France was Duarte's teammate for another year. The likeable driver from Paris, who enjoys a summer house off an island on the West Coast of France, struggled with just three finishes in his six starts. His best day was an eighth in Portugal followed by a ninth in Russia for five points overall and tied for 15th in the drivers championship.

The American Team Nautica organization enjoyed a three boat group of racers led by Norwegian women Marit Stromoy. The Oslo driver, had a breakthrough season, with a tremendous pole position at the Grand Prix of Portugal in May and later in the year with a second place starting spot in Abu Dhabi.

The multi-talented driver lost out on her first ever Grand Prix win when she and Shaun Torrente got together on a re-start in Portugal eliminating both drivers. This was followed by a season best sixth place in Kazan for her last finishing result of the season. Marit closed out 2011 with nine points tied for 13th but with a lot of confidence for the upcoming season as well.

Swiss driver Rinaldo "Rini" Osculati raced in six of seven events. He earned a championship point with a 10th place finish in Kazan. Rini's luck ran out failing to finish his last two starts for the native of Monza, Italy.

Joining Rini was another rookie in Polish driver Bartek Marszalek. His promising first season in F1 was abruptly ended in Abu Dhabi when he and Shaun Torrente got together at the first corner and never finished the first lap. Bartek's best day came in Kiev when he qualified 15th and climbed up to 10th earning his first point in F1 tied for 20th in the standings.

Russian pilot Stanislav Kourtsenovsky raced twice in Kazan and Kiev for his Jetech Tool F1 Racing Team. The veteran from St. Petersburg earning a fine seventh place after charging all the way from 16th on the grid at his home Grand Prix. This talented driver is hoping to fill his calendar for the upcoming campaign and run a full season.

In total, 2011 saw 24 drivers from 13 different countries travel throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East on their 10 month journey for a World Title. In the end, a young, new generation Italian in only 15 starts joined the elite list of person's who can be called World Champion. Alex Carella give the Qatar Team their second title in four years and moves them in a tie with Team Abu Dhabi and the Mad Croc Teams for most drivers titles of current F1 organizations.

Is 2012 going to be the year that Team's Abu Dhabi or Mad Croc shoot for revenge? Or will the Qatar Team

make it a rare back to back success for one Alex Carella? Time is short, there is only 10 weeks before the start of the new campaign on the ninth and tenth of March at the Grand Prix of Qatar in Doha.

Stay tuned, new drivers to new teams and new boats. It's already shaping up to something special for 2012!

Morgan 3 Wheeler Gulf Edition - profile

We love the classic baby blue and orange Gulf livery as much as anyone, but when everything from the Tata Nano to a DeLorean and even a racing-grade semi truck (okay, the semi is pretty cool...) is painted in the scheme, it might be time to give it a rest. With perhaps one notable exception: this Gulf Edition Morgan 3 Wheeler.

Not only does Morgan have a legitimate racing relationship with Gulf Oil in Le Mans-class racing, we just so happen to love the Morgan 3 Wheeler more than almost anything else on wheels... no matter what hue it's painted. Combine the two and you've got us drooling.

Morgan will build 100 commemorative Gulf Edition 3 Wheeler models, with a starting price of 29,162.50 pounds (plus Value Added Tax) in the UK - that's around $46,700 US. We're not sure how many examples will make it Stateside, but if we happened to be in the market for an in-your-face adrenaline rush on three wheels, we'd have our friendly neighborhood US distributor on speed dial.

Check out the high-res image gallery above, and don't forget the press release below.

Bottas says he needs to race in 2013

Valtteri Bottas Valtteri Bottas says he needs to get racing in 2013 if he is to continue his development as a driver.

With the Finn understood to be closing in on a deal to join Pastor Maldonado at Williams next year, he reckons another season just as third driver would be of little use to him.

“I need to get racing and F1 is the place I want to be,” Bottas said when asked by AUTOSPORT about whether he felt it essential he raced next year.

“I just need to drive more. This year already, this second half of the season, when there were big gaps between Fridays, it started to feel more and more difficult to find the rhythm quickly, especially when it was a new circuit to learn.

“So really I need to get to drive more because it is not easy to keep up and improve.

“Many times the case was in the second half of the season that just when you got a good rhythm or understood a track, then the tyres were finished.”

Bottas, who has little sponsorship backing, is believed to be the favoured option to partner Maldonado in 2013 following his performances on grand prix Fridays this year.

The man himself thinks he did everything he could to prove to Williams that his talent justifies a race seat, and he feels he has the potential to do even better with more mileage under his belt.

“I hope they see that I will do really well, and I know there is much more to come if I can drive more,” he said.

“I hope the team can see that there is much more to improve.

“It has not always been about showing quick lap times [on Fridays], because there have been many times when it has been about gathering data and useful information from practice one. “

Bruno Senna, who drove the second Williams in 2012, is understood to be a strong contender to drive at either Caterham or Force India for next season.

Batman-Themed Dark Knight Rises Nissan Juke NISMO Announced, Fits More Supermodels than a Lambo

Nissan Dark Knight Rises Juke NISMO

Before we discuss the particulars of this special, one-off Nissan Dark Knight Rises Juke NISMO, let us be clear: It isn’t the next Batmobile, and the epic Tumbler tank thing remains Batman’s ride of choice. Instead, the Dark Knight Rises (DKR) Juke commemorates the third installment of director Christopher Nolan’s Batman movie trilogy, and as such gets a host of batty upgrades.

Starting with the 197-hp Juke NISMO, Nissan Design Europe gave the Bat-ified crossover a matte-black finish and gloss-black 18-inch wheels with sinister-looking red-painted accents. There are aluminum bat badges on the grille and tailgate, as well as lights under each side mirror that project bat symbols onto the ground. Think that’s ridiculous? Ford offers Mustang buyers a similar gimmick, but only the Nissan’s might signal the Caped Crusader into action. And the ‘Stang lacks such a feature inside the car; the DKR Juke gets a bat symbol projector that splashes Batman’s macro-scale alert sign onto the ceiling.

Nissan says the Dark Knight Rises Juke NISMO will make the driver “feel just like Bruce Wayne.” Our guess? You could probably get closer to the experience if you buy a Halloween costume and ask your significant other to dress up like Catwoman. If you’re not casually dating Anne Hathaway—or if that Car and Driver hypothetical question hits a bit too close to home—you also could go source a Tumbler (or perhaps more easily, a Lamborghini) and play Mr. Wayne to your heart’s content. But that’s not to take away from the DKR Juke’s zany level of cool, just that it’s unlikely to instill a sense of superhero-tude in its driver.

Nissan U.K. is giving the unique Juke away in a sweepstakes most of you probably aren’t eligible to win. The contest is being conducted in England, and the Dark Knight Rises Juke is based on the NISMO model we won’t be getting here for a while. But for our British readers, Nissan’s DKR Juke NISMO giveaway runs until next February 28, so if you can’t swing a Lambo, Tumbler, or just want a cape-appropriate ride, head here to enter.

2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Limited Edition Launched [2012 L.A. Auto Show]

2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Limited Edition

It’s been 30 years since Mitsubishi arrived on our shores with its first batch of compact and fuel-efficient cars. The brand has had its high and low points since, but the U.S. branch seems to be operating at its nadir right now. So it might be fitting that the Outlander Sport Limited Edition, which Mitsubishi is now launching to celebrate its heritage, features a “distinctly ominous look” according to the press release.

The Outlander Sport compact crossover is distinguished by its aggressive “jetfighter grille” and this new model adds dark bumper sections, wheel arches, and side mirrors, and also gets special aluminum wheels. The interior is decorated in dark hues, and gray and black two-tone leather seats are optional. The only non-cosmetic modification pertains to the engine, which Mitsubishi claims offers higher performance and quicker acceleration thanks to a new balance shaft. No further details were provided.

We hope that the “foreboding treatment” (Mitsubishi’s words) of this limited-edition Outlander Sport is no harbinger of the brand’s future. We’d at least like to see another Evo—we named it the best-handling car under $40K last year—although that’s in doubt even if Mitsu stays here another 30 years.

Bonito Dominates iRPS at Indianapolis

Bonito scored a flag-to-flag maiden iRPS victory at Indianapolis.

The third round of the iRacing.com Road Pro Series brought the virtual Williams-Toyota FW31s to the 13 turns of the Indianapolis Grand Prix circuit in its bid to source 25 new entrants for the 2013 iRacing.com World Championship Grand Prix Series. Securing his first ever victory of the iRPS was Enzo Bonito, who put on a nearly flawless display to dominate the 73 lap online race in its entirety. Fortunately for the Italian, his start at the front of the 29 car grid meant he missed out on the opening lap carnage that marred proceedings at the virtual Brickyard.

After qualifying on pole with a time of 1:05.960, ineX Racing’s Bonito maintained his spot at the front even as behind him several cars found themselves embroiled in collisions within a few seconds of the green flag. After making a good getaway from the line, Radical Racing’s Paul Ilbrink approached the tail of Max Dell Orco, who was making his first appearance of the season. But as Ilbrink moved to the left of the Italian, Dell Orco’s car inexplicably veered in the same direction and set off into a spin. Ilbrink attempted to take avoiding action, which put him directly into the path of Ryan Terpstra, who had nowhere to go and collided with the Dutchman. A moment later, Dell Orco was finishing his spin at the same location as Terpstra and Ilbrink, which sent him back into the path of traffic in the middle of the circuit. Desperately trying to avoid Dell Orco’s wayward car, Vasily Zaitsev darted to the right and tagged Fabio do Carmo, who was able to recover and get his car to the finish, despite sustaining damage in the process.

Ilbrink vectors toward Terpstra amid the start-line chaos.

Meanwhile, as the field negotiated Turn One, Samuel Libeert’s contact with Davy Decorp’s left rear wheel sent the Frenchman into a 360 degree barrel-roll, before coming to a rest on the outside grass of the second corner. Miraculously, Decorps was able to get back to the pits, take repairs and rejoin the race to secure an eventual twelfth place finish. Libeert was not so fortunate, with the Radical’s sim-racer retiring early in twenty-fifth.

Descorps goes for a ride in Turn One, courtesy of Libeert.

Elsewhere, Aleksi Uusi-Jaakkola who had held a 100% winning record in the series to date, misjudged his braking into Turn Six and tagged Mogar DG Filho. The resulting suspension damage to Uusi-Jaakkola’s Williams-Toyota saw the Finn retire immediately, whilst Filho was able to limp home to the finish twenty-first with a severely damaged rear-wing, albeit four-laps down.

Uusi-Jaakkola blotted his formerly unblemished copybook — and fell from the championship lead — as the result of this coming-together with Filho.

As confusion reigned supreme behind him, Bonito was carving out his lead, with Emil Spindel and Richie Stanaway in tow after gaining immediate promotion following Filho’s incident. Within a handful of laps Bonito had established a lead of nearly two-seconds, the same margin Spindel carried over Stanaway. By the time the Italian headed to pit-lane for his first stop for fuel and tires on lap 26, the margin was up to four seconds.

Settling into a comfortable pace for his second stint, Bonito was able to improve his advantage over Spindel, although a penalty for cutting the track at Turn One did see the ineX racer drop his lead from seven to five seconds by the time he made his final pit-stop. For his final batch of 24 laps, Bonito’s pace proved to be unassailable, as he brought his Williams-Toyota FW31 home, unfettered with a nine-second gap in his pocket at the chequered flag. “I just let the car fly, I haven’t won this race, my team was on pole,” Bonito briefly and selflessly explained post-race.

“I just let the car fly, I haven’t won this race, my team was on pole.” — Enzo Bonito

The second place finish for Spindel, his best of the season so far, was enough to move the Scandinavian into the overall lead in the points standings, and earmark him as an iRPS championship contender. “I think there was not much I could do about Enzo with my pace this race,” the 2012 iWCGPS regular explained post race. “And looking at the rest of his teammates’ performances and pace, I think it’s clear they were in really good shape here. After the second pit stop, I saw I had lost two to three seconds during the pit-stops somehow, I sort of lost the motivation and there was no way I would catch those six to seven seconds so I let off.”

Although Stanaway was unable to match the unrelenting pace of Bonito and Spindel ahead of him, the New Zealander kept his hopes of a promotion to the iWCGPS alive with his first ever podium finish.

Whilst the top three finishers ‘cruised’ their way to the chequered flag, Teemu Iivonen, Dave Gelink and Simon Cattell had a 73 lap battle to the finish line. Starting from seventeenth on the grid, Iivonen made huge headway as a result of the opening lap confusion. Within just a few laps of the start, the Finn was up to sixth position, which soon became seventh on Lap 16, when he passed his ineX Racing teammate Gelink at Turn One. Then a mistake on pit-road by Englishman Cattell that cost him several seconds handed Iivonen fourth place. Cattell’s second pit-stop proved to be just as costly, as he exited in sixth position, behind Gelink, who had taken service several laps earlier.

Iivonen capped a great day for ineX Racing by leading Gelink and Cattell home in 4-5-6.

Locked together nose-to-tail for the final stint of the race, Iivonen led the trio of ineX Racing Williams-Toyota FW31s to the chequered flag, with barely a second separating the three of them. “To my surprise I managed to miss all the mayhem in Turn One and Turn Two and was sixth after the first lap when me and PJ [Stergios] drafted passed Sam,” Helsinki-based Iivonen shared this week. “After that I kept switching places with both Dave [Gelink] and Simon [Cattell] after they had various misfortunes with slowdowns and pit-stops. It was a motivation boost to have my team-mates right behind me and made me more focused on the race.  However I couldn’t close the gap to Richie [Stanaway] though since he had a really good pace in front.”

Once PJ Stergios had worked his way into seventh position at the start, the American barely put a foot wrong to maintain his position until the chequered flag. Assisted by a three-car battle between Jesper Pedersen, Pierre Urbizu and Jaoa Cardosa behind him, Stergios’ main challenge was the 2.6 mile circuit. As for the trio behind, after trading positions throughout the race, they finished eighth, ninth and tenth respectively, with Pedersen carrying a seven-second advantage to the line.

Pedersen bested Urbizu and Cardosa in a furious battle for eighth spot.

With Uusi-Jaakkola’s early exit at Indianapolis, the iRacing.com Road Pro Series standings underwent a considerable shake-up. Spindel’s first podium finish of the season sees him top the standings with 104 points to his name, with Indianapolis winner Bonito and Uusi-Jaakkola sharing second spot on 102. Filho’s early retirement sees him drop to fourth on 84 points, whilst Decorps’ tenacity sees the Frenchman move into fifth, just a single point behind.

Round Four of the iRPS heads to British shores for a visit to Silverstone’s Grand Prix circuit, a favourite amongst many of the drivers. With the championship leader-board so tightly packed, who will come out on top is anyone’s guess. You can find out live at GlacierTV.com this Saturday, and catch the analysis on inRacingNews soon after.

Hansen’s Pocono Upset

Hansen led the final 30 laps at Pocono en route to his first NiPS win.

Danny Hansen scored his first career NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series victory at Pocono Raceway, using some clutch driving to hold-off Josh Berry and Jared Crawford over the final 16 lap run to the checkers. Hansen took the lead on Lap 50 through pit strategy and needed some yellow flag laps in order to make it on fuel. Two quick yellows enabled Hansen to save more than enough fuel to make it to the finish. Along with his win, Hansen picked-up the bonus point for leading the most laps after pacing the field for 30 tours of the Tricky Triangle, one more than Crawford.

“Well what can I say, winning that race was pretty dang cool,” said Hansen after his victory. “It’s just really, really cool to see my hard work as well as my team’s hard work finally pay-off big time.”

“It’s just really, really cool to see my hard work as well as my team’s hard work finally pay-off big time.” — Danny Hansen

Both Berry and Crawford started to close-in with 10 laps remaining as Hansen’s car started to tighten up, but a caution flag with four laps to go sealed the win for Hansen. Berry finished second, Crawford wound up third and Kenneth O’Keefe rallied for fourth after spinning around and incurring damage in a restart pile-up early on. Josh Laughton rounded out the top five.

Crawford edged Hansen by .004s for his first pole of the season and stretched-out a huge seven second lead during the first long green flag run of the online race. It looked as if Crawford was going to walk away with a dominating victory, but caution flags and an unlucky break with pit strategy killed any chance he had of making up the track position he lost in the pits.

Cautions flew early and often at the Tricky Triangle, with seven yellows slowing the pace for 28 of 80 laps. As the saying goes, ‘yellows breed yellows’ and there were several wrecks on restart laps. Drivers knew that would be the time to strike, and there was more take than give even before the halfway point.

Crawford grabbed the pole and led 29 laps before slipping to a third place finish.

Joey Brown’s bad luck continued when he tried to avoid a wreck on Lap 37. He ended up overcorrecting into the wall when trying to miss Jarl Teien’s spinning car and finished thirty-fourth, dead last. With two bad races in the first four, Brown has an uphill battle ahead of him if he hopes to have any shot of contending for the NiPS title.

Carson Downs, fresh off his flip two weeks ago at Phoenix once again had bad luck on a restart. This time, he came out on the wrong end of a three wide battle with Hansen and Josh Laughton and ended-up with a torn-up race car and a twenty-ninth place finish, dropping him down in the points standings.

Points leader Chad Laughton also found trouble on Lap 54 when he got loose off of Turn One on a restart and pancaked the right side of his car against the wall, causing serious suspension damage. Laughton wound up a disappointing fifteenth.

That bad finish let Crawford chop into Chad Laughton’s points lead, with the margin now down to 17 points. Dustin Montgomery sits third, 31 back. Hansen climbed all the way to fourth overall with his win and is only two points behind Montgomery while Adam Gilliland rounds out the top five as his strong season continues.

Pit stop strategy proved decisive at Pocono.

Last week’s rain-out in Homestead means that Pocono marked the end of the first half of the 2012 NiPS season. With only five races to go, time is already running out for those drivers currently outside the Top 25 to qualify for those coveted berths in the 2013 NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship. Laughton’s championship NiPS lead seems safe for now, but one more slip-up and Crawford will be right there.

Both Crawford and Chad Laughton have been strong at the next track up for the NiPS: Kentucky Speedway. The one-groove track is bumpy and unforgiving, which could lead to a lot of yellow flags as drivers fight for the thin strip of asphalt with the most grip.

Crawford has momentum going into the second half of the season and it will be up to Laughton and the rest of the field to keep him in check. If Kentucky ends up going green, look for Crawford to find his way to the front, if he is not there already.

Chevy Gives Gran Turismo 5 Players Chance at Driving a 2014 Corvette C7—Virtually [2012 L.A. Auto Show]

2014 Chevrolet Corvette C7 Test Prototype Gran Turismo 5

Chevrolet prides itself on its ability to keep each new generation of the Corvette a near-total mystery until it is revealed. For the most part, the company is successful—we’ve only spied well-covered 2014 Corvette C7 test mules, and background info on the car is hard to come by. (We do know a little bit about the latest Vette’s new-generation small-block V-8.) This reality makes Chevy’s collaboration with the folks behind the Gran Turismo 5 video game to offer a 2014 C7 Corvette prototype in the game all the more fascinating. Players now can download a camouflaged Corvette test mule and drive it on any track they like, well before the real deal makes its debut in January.

2014 Chevrolet Corvette C7 Test Prototype Gran Turismo 5

Besides giving enthusiasts a rare, virtual first look at a hotly anticipated new sports car, Chevrolet’s participation with Polyphony Digital, the outfit behind GT5, further raises the next-gen Vette’s profile. We also dig how the in-game C7 is fully decked out with a heavy layer of complex camouflage, just like the real prototypes we’ve caught testing in the wild. Chevy says the digital C7 even features realistically unfinished driving dynamics. That said, the game doesn’t give players the finalized 2014 Corvette experience—Chevrolet is clear that the in-game car merely approximates “specific driving characteristics that are currently being tuned and refined ahead of the vehicle’s official debut in January.”

2014 Chevrolet Corvette C7 Test Prototype Gran Turismo 5

The Corvette may be wearing a layer of cover-up for its Gran Turismo 5 appearance, but Chevy’s work to keep the car’s detailing as secret as possible may actually have been undone slightly by Polyphony’s digitization. That’s because the Vette in the game is pretty clearly rendered, as opposed to the at-times blurry spy photos of its real-life counterparts that we’ve seen. Assuming the digital car is as realistically recreated as the rest of the rides in GT5, this is perhaps our best look yet at the next-gen Corvette.
