Cars donated by Ron Pratte, Rick Hendrick sold at Barrett-Jackson; Proceeds will support fight against older adult hunger.
SCOTTSDALE, AZ – Two cars donated by Ron Pratte, a car enthusiast from Chandler, Ariz., and Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports, brought in a $350,000 donation to help the fight against older adult hunger at the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction in Scottsdale on Saturday evening. The cars were auctioned as a single lot, with the proceeds being donated to AARP Foundation in support of Drive to End Hunger.
Pratte donated a 2006 No. 24 DuPont Monte Carlo racecar, which was driven onto the Barrett-Jackson stage by four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon, who had earlier driven the same car to two victories and two pole positions on the NASCAR circuit. Hendrick donated a limited edition 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo street car, specially designed and built by Jeff Gordon Chevrolet, which was driven onto the auction stage by AARP Foundation President Jo Ann Jenkins.
“AARP Foundation is profoundly grateful for the generosity of Ron, and Rick, and we thank Barrett-Jackson for being a great host,” said Jenkins. “The donation raised today will fund immediate help for the nearly nine million Americans ages 50-plus who struggle to put food on the table every day, as well as create long-term solutions to prevent the threat of hunger for many others.”
“What a great way to start the year,” said Gordon, driver of the No. 24 Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports. “These two cars have meant a lot to me, and it’s great to know that they’re now part of the fight against older adult hunger.”
This is the second consecutive year that Hendrick and Pratte have teamed up at “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auction” to support Drive to End Hunger. In January 2012, Hendrick donated the first Chevrolet Corvette 427 Convertible, which was bought by Pratte in an auction that raised a total donation of $700,000 for AARP Foundation.
“It felt great to be a part of Drive to End Hunger last year, and I wanted to do more,” said Pratte, founder and former CEO of the Pratte Development Company. “I’m proud to stand up here with Rick and Jeff in support of such an important cause.”
“I’m so excited to help raise another $350,000 for AARP Foundation,” said Hendrick. “I’m really grateful for the opportunity to raise money that will provide real help for people struggling to put food on the table.”
AARP and AARP Foundation created Drive to End Hunger in 2010 to raise awareness about the problem of hunger among struggling Americans 50+ and to develop long-term, sustainable solutions to the problem. In 2011, AARP became NASCAR’s first cause-based primary sponsor with Drive to End Hunger featured on the No. 24 Chevrolet driven by Gordon. The effort raises the visibility of hunger while collecting cash and food donations in NASCAR race markets across the country.
Earlier this month, C.H. Robinson, one of the world’s largest produce sourcing and logistics companies, announced an initiative to support Drive to End Hunger by offering specially designed packaging on Tropicana clementines at retailers nationwide.
To date, Drive to End Hunger has donated almost 16 million meals and driven corporate and individual donor commitments with an expected value of more than $18 million.
