Kubica dominates opening stages

Robert KubicaRobert Kubica dominated the opening stages of his European Rally Championship debut in the Canaries.

The Pole already leads round three of the ERC by 38 seconds after just three stages.

Kubica had insisted that he would take the event carefully and use it as a learning experience, but he has still been a class apart so far.

His performance has been helped by an ideal choice of tyre compound for the damp stages, and his Regional Rally Car-spec Citroen’s advantage over his main rivals’ Super 2000-spec cars.

Why Kubica can win his ERC debut

Works Skoda driver Jan Kopecky, a double winner of the event in the past, leads Peugeot’s Craig Breen in a close fight over second place.

Friday features another five stages across two loops before Saturday’s concluding leg.

Kubica has committed to a four-round ERC programme alongside his WRC2 entry.
