Ailing Ogier fears for Portugal fitness

Sebastien OgierWorld Rally Championship leader Sebastien Ogier has admitted he feared he would not make the start of this week’s Rally of Portugal due to illness.

Ogier is still recovering from the flu and says he expects his performance on the event to be impacted by his condition.

He has been ill for the last two weeks, with a virus in his throat the biggest cause for concern. The issue forced him to sit out last week’s non-championship Fafe Rally Sprint.

“I was close to not coming [to the rally], but we decided to come because nobody has a solution to give me,” said the Volkswagen driver.

“If somebody had proposed a solution to heal me, then for sure I would go there and forget the rally.

“But when there was no solution, then I decide to come and try.

“The recce went OK and since then it’s a bit better. Hopefully it will continue like this.

“I am getting better, but slowly. I hope that by Sunday I can recover a little bit and I can be back on my form.”

Ogier leads the drivers’ standings by 31 points from Sebastien Loeb and 44 points from Mikko Hirvonen.
