Lewis to replace Wehrlein in F3

Michael Lewis F3American Michael Lewis is to return to the FIA Formula 3 European Championship starting from this weekend’s second round at Silverstone.

As exclusively predicted in AUTOSPORT magazine on March 28, the 22-year-old Californian will take the Mucke Motorsport Dallara-Mercedes seat vacated by Monza race winner Pascal Wehrlein, who is moving to the DTM with Mercedes.

Lewis was runner-up in the Italian F3 Championship with Prema Powerteam in 2011 before moving up to European F3 with the same team last year, finishing eighth in the Euro Series and ninth in the European championship. He scored one win, in a reversed-grid race at Silverstone.

“I just can’t wait to get back into the cockpit,” he said. “It’s really exciting to be back racing this weekend, and I will give my very best. I’d like to thank Mucke Motorsport and Mercedes-Benz for having offered me this opportunity.”

Unlike many of his F3 rivals, Lewis has raced on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit, taking two top-10 finishes in the Formula BMW Europe round in 2010.
