HAYDEN INJURED IN TRAINING ACCIDENT

DUCATI
HAYDEN INJURED IN TRAINING ACCIDENT
Thursday Dec 29 2011

Nicky Hayden's winter vacation was marred on Tuesday, December 27, when he broke his left scapula and fractured two ribs while training near his home in Owensboro, Kentucky. Hayden was training at a private indoor flat track facility, riding a motorcycle for the first time since breaking his scaphoid at the Valencia Grand Prix on November 6. He underwent an X-ray and CAT scan on the same day he was injured, and he has since undergone an MRI. At the moment, there are no plans for surgery, but Hayden will have the scapula reassessed next week by Dr. Arthur Ting in Fremont, California, to see how his fracture is progressing. According to the healing process, the next few weeks will determine whether Hayden will take part in the first winter test session of 2012, which will begin on January 31 in Sepang, Malaysia.

"Obviously, injuries are never good," Hayden said, "but it's part of motorcycle racing. Just like at Valencia, it was kind of a freak accident. I was starting to train again, like I normally do during the winter, at a private track near my house. I came up behind another rider, and he went to move out of the way. I wasn't going that fast, but he clipped my front wheel and I went down and landed pretty hard on my left shoulder, and that was it. It's disappointing, but there's nothing to do about it but heal quickly. Anyway, this doesn't change my expectations for 2012 which, fortunately, is just around the corner."

Truex close to new Waltrip deal

Martin Truex JrMartin Truex Jr claims he is “very close” to extending his relationship with Michael Waltrip Racing.

The 32-year-old is currently in position to claim a Chase berth for only the second time in his NASCAR Sprint Cup career, and the first ever for an MWR driver in its short history in NASCAR’s elite series.

Truex joined the outfit in 2010 after leaving Earnhardt Ganassi Racing and despite being winless since his maiden Cup victory with Dale Earnhardt Inc in 2007, he currently ranks fifth in the points standings.

Speaking at Watkins Glen on Friday he said his new deal with MWR is nearly set and he is looking forward to seeing his work during the past few years rewarded.

“We’re very, very close,” said Truex about his new deal. “I’m not going to say it’s done, but it’s basically done. I’m very, very happy about that.

“I guess, it’s one of those deals where we had to work out some details, but there was never a thought of me saying ‘what are my options, what am I thinking?’ There was none of that. It was ‘how can we get this deal done?’ and moving forward.

“We’ve come a long way. When you put that much work into something, you don’t want to just say, ‘Ah, I can do this somewhere else,’ because it’s not that easy. I’ve put a lot of effort into being part of that team, to help them build a programme and they’ve invested a lot into me to be a part of that programme.”

Truex’s MWR team-mate Clint Bowyer is currently 10th in Cup points and in a position to enter this year’s Chase as well.

Lowndes doubles up at Ipswich

Craig Lowndes completed a double victory in the second V8 Supercars race of the weekend at Ipswich’s Queensland Raceway.

The Saturday winner had only qualified fourth for race two, but muscled his way up to second on lap one as Mark Winterbottom got the jump on his polesitting Ford Performance Racing team-mate Will Davison to claim the initial lead.

Lowndes (Triple Eight Holden) soon attacked Winterbottom, slipping into the lead on lap six and then keeping the Ford at a safe distance to the finish.

Championship leader Jamie Whincup could not stay with Lowndes and Winterbottom so had to settle for third in Triple Eight’s second car.

Davison was elbowed back as low as fifth in the early running and finished back in fourth. Fabian Coulthard and Russell Ingall completed the top six.

Chevy (Staffing) Runs Deep: We Interview GM’s New Marketing Boss

Just before inking a deal to put Chevrolet logos on English soccer fields, General Motors came from what seemed like left field to fire the executive who had put the sponsorship together. Joel Ewanick, GM’s former chief marketing officer, had caught heat recently for ending GM’s Facebook advertising and saying GM wouldn’t run a spot in next year’s Super Bowl. That heat led to Ewanick’s departure from Chevrolet last week.

But why dwell on old news? GM didn’t, and wasted no time in appointing an interim CMO, the current VP of sales and service, Alan Batey. We, in turn, wasted no time in harassing General Motors for an interview with Mr. Batey. Could the 30-year GM vet, who started with Vauxhall in the U.K. and has since worked for the company in Germany, Dubai, Korea, and Australia tell us what’s going on with Chevrolet? Read full story »

Dragon back to two cars for Sonoma

Katherine LeggeDragon Racing will revert to a two-car line-up for the Sonoma IndyCar race later this month after securing a second Chevrolet engine for Katherine Legge.

Legge and Sebastien Bourdais formed a two-car line-up at the start of the season, but Dragon was forced to cut back to one entry after switching its engine deal from Lotus to Chevrolet, with Legge scheduled to drive the oval races, and Bourdais taking the wheel on road and street courses.

“I am extremely grateful to Chevrolet for making this second engine available so we can return to a full team effort in Sonoma,” said team owner Jay Penske.

“When we began the season at St Pete it was our plan to run a full season with both the #6 and #7 entries, but due to circumstances beyond our control we had to reduce the effort to one car. We are really looking forward to competing in Sonoma.”

Legge said that she was pleased to be getting an additional race under her belt.

“Obviously I’m thrilled to get back behind the wheel at Sonoma, and also to get the opportunity to test there prior to the race,” she said. “We’re all racers, and anytime you have to sit out a race, it’s tough. But we’ve been doing our best with the situation, and hopefully we’ll get the results we know we’re capable of in Sonoma.”

The team will revert to a single car for Bourdais at the following round in Baltimore, with Legge due to complete the season at the Fontana finale.

SRF Challenge Draws Big Numbers for Week 1

The numbers are in, and it looks like the new SpecRacer Ford Challenge series may have set some attendance records in its inaugural week, drawing in some VERY strong numbers.

How strong?

In terms of attendance numbers among the non-Rookie series, the D-Class SpecRacer Ford Challenge was the #2 series for Week 1 of Season 3, 2012, weighing-in with 724 different drivers participating throughout the course of the week, which puts it right behind the Skip Barber series, which featured 937 different drivers participating for Week 1.

In terms of overall participation numbers for Week 1, including the Rookie-class series, the SpecRacer Ford Challenge still weighted-in at #3, coming in behind the Rookie-class Mazda Cup (fixed) series with 2,323 different Rookie and D-Class drivers participating, and then the aforementioned Skip Barber series with 937 participating sim-racers.

Week 1 of the SRF Challenge saw big fields at The Glen.

This means that the SRF Challenge series beat-out the other two Rookie-class series, including the Advanced Rookie inRacingNews Challenge multiclass series and the Cadillac Cup (fixed) series.

Even more staggering is the fact that the SRF Challenge series also drew in greater numbers than the popular and well-established D-Class Mustang Cup series which drew in 638 drivers for Week 1; this is an even more exceptional accomplishment when you consider the Mustang Cup featured the free, base-content Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca course for Week 1 (meaning no purchase required other than the Mustang FR500S itself), while the SRF Challenge series utilized Watkins Glen Boot — a purchased track — on its Week 1 schedule.

If you want to check out the Season 3 stats for yourself, I highly recommend using René Raulin’s weekly race participation site:

Link:  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ak0cuNIOoiffdEM3endQQTlaN3M1Wko0TmFiZUxGQ2c#gid=1>René Raulin’s Weekly Race Participation tracking

Watkins Glen is one of iRacing’s most popular tracks, and with the SpecRacer Ford Challenge debuting as a new series for Season 3, these amazing attendance numbers might be attributable to people’s curiosity and a desire to see what the new series will be like.  The SRF also seems to have benefited from some very positive (and as-yet unpublicized) performance enhancements as a result of the Season 3 build release.  Its “new” handling has created a bit of a “buzz” in various discussion threads throughout the iRacing community forums, which has certainly helped fuel people’s curiosity and their desire to see what the car (and series) now has to offer.

Competition-wise, the SRF saw an influx of “fast Finns” during Week 1, with Henri Salminem, Aleksi Uusi-Jaakkola, and Petteri Kotovaara emerging as both the overall and Division 1 points leaders.  The competition seems to be extremely deep this season, witness defending inRacingNews Challenge SRF Champion Chris Hughson showing up in 29th overall and 25th in Division 1.

The overall Championship and Divisional standing for Week 1 are as follows:

Division 1:
Henri Salminen (Finland) – 277 points
Aleksi Uusi-Jaakkola (Finland) – 258 points
Petteri Kotovaara (Finland) – 240 points

Division 2:
Mirko Salati (Italy) – 173 points
Alfonso Rodriguez (Florida) – 167 points
Krisian Lindroth (Finland) – 152 points

Division 3:
Tyler A. King (Michigan) – 144 points
Niko Zazavoum (France) – 123 points
Frederico Pezzotti (Brazil) – 120 points

Division 4:
Matthew Pilus (Texas) – 116 points
Luca Sbrissa2 (Italy) – 110 points
Dennis Gocke (DE-AT-CH) – 108 points

Division 5:
Alvin Nieves (Plains) – 101 points
Tim Ducos (Plains) – 91 points
Vit Salomon (Central-Eastern Europe) – 90 points

Division 6:
David B Jackson (Midwest) – 80 points
Jake Burton (Australia/NZ) – 77 points
Sean Siff (New England) – 68 points

Division 7:
Keith Bouchard (Midwest) – 65 points
Brian Cross (West) – 65 points
Henrik Hedegaard (Scandinavia) – 62 points

Division 8:
Andras Laszlo Kovacs (Central-Eastern Europe) – 66 points
Robert Connell (Pennsylvania) – 61 points
Daniel Burgemeister (Australia/NZ) – 58 points

Division 9:
Rene Borger (DE-AT-CH) – 54 points
Mark Mendonca (Massachusetts) – 48 points
Leandro Seabra (Brazil) – 40 points

Division 10:
Bill Litz (Michigan) – 54 points
Adam Isman (Western Canada) – 51 points
Aleksei Bryankin (Central-Eastern Europe) – 41 points

Rookie:
Massimo Artiglia (DE-AT-CH) – 11 points

The SRF at Watkins Glen Boot — and the quality of racing that occurred on-track throughout the week — received quite a bit of praise in the SpecRacer Ford Challenge discussion forum threads from people who participated during Week 1, and it seems that the car and the series has won over quite a few people already.

Time will tell if the series can sustain these attendance numbers, and since there is no historical data to draw on for this new series that might indicate how the attendance will trend, the only thing that SpecRacer Ford fans can do is wait . . . and race, of course.

Week 2 sees the SRF Challenge tackle the roller coaster ride of Brands Hatch.

Week 2 at Brands Hatch seems to be off to a bit of a slower start, which is not totally unexpected, given that the Brands Hatch is generally a less popular venue than the evergreen Watkins Glen circuit.  Brands is one of those tracks that doesn’t appear on many schedules, and therefore might be a required purchase even for more seasoned iRacers who have long-since moved past the Rookie Ranks and participated in other series at higher license levels, so this might further contribute to a dip in attendance for Week 2.

The racing that has occurred so far during Week 1 has been lively, and Brands Hatch GP is a fun little roller-coaster of a track in the SpecRacer Ford, with slightly lower lap times than Watkins Glen Boot, and several sections that are considerably more technically challenging.  The SRF’s “new” handling characteristics mesh well with the Brands GP layout, and Brands is at once easy to learn AND technically challenging enough to keep both old and new iRacers on their toes.  So if you missed out on the Week 1 festivities at The Glen, Week 2 at Brands Hatch GP promises to be just as fun, so grab your SRF, toss Brands in your shopping cart if you don’t own it already, and come join the fun to see what the SRF buzz is all about.

As they say, the more, the merrier — and the Season 3 version of the SpecRacer Ford seems to be more fun than ever.

Honda aims to win first race in 2013

Gabriele Tarquini Honda WTCC test Vallelunga 2012Honda’s World Touring Car Championship team boss Alessandro Mariani has set out a bold aim to win the opening race of next season, despite the new Civic WTCC having only hit the track a week ago.

Mariani, whose JAS team is running Honda’s works operation from its Italian base, said following the Civic’s first proper test at Vallelunga that the programme has all the ingredients necessary – including drivers Gabriele Tarquini and Tiago Monteiro – to challenge the established teams when it runs full-time in 2013.

“Although Honda is not putting any pressure on us, we would like to achieve some good results, and our true goal is winning the first race in 2013,” Mariani said. “We all like to aim for victory! Anything may happen, but this is the right spirit when you take part in competitions.

“However, we must take into account that we have a brand new car, that we will start racing after only four test sessions and that the championship is very competitive. We have two great drivers, I know we have built a very-advanced car and Honda’s reputation in engine expertise is second to none.

“We have all the right ingredients, we just need to be patient and take the time to mix them in the best way.”

Tarquini, who will continue to test the car this year, but will not race it until 2013 due to his ongoing contract with the Lukoil SEAT squad, said that the key to a strong car will be getting the 1600cc turbocharged engine right as soon as possible.

“That was the first goal,” the 2009 world champion said. “It’s the most important part and the most difficult one to set-up. We have not done many miles yet, but I’m confident we’ll get there.

“This is Honda’s first factory programme since it left Formula 1, so there is pressure, but you can see how much in the way of engineering resources they are dedicating. Sure it’s very hard to be in the WTCC and be at the front right away, but when I see the dedication of everybody around the project, I’m confident we’ll catch up quickly.”

Honda has won a WTCC race before – James Thompson taking victory at Imola in an N.Technology-run Accord in 2008 – but the Japanese manufacturer has never previously run a works team in the series.

Monteiro will give the Civic its debut at Suzuka in October and compete in the two remaining rounds of this season after the Japanese event. Tarquini will join the race team for 2013.

Season 3 Rookie Series Shake-Ups

The Season 3 schedule features some significant shake-ups for the Rookie and Advanced Rookie series, with one car leaving the inRacingNews Challenge Advanced Rookie road racing series, a shift in license level restrictions for the entry-level Mazda Cup and iRacing.com Street Stock Rookie series on both the Road and Oval sides, and cars that were previously only used exclusively in the rookie ranks “graduating” to new series at advanced license levels.

The biggest change involves a shift in license requirements – or, more correctly, restrictions – for the Rookie road and oval series.  Previously, the Rookie series were open to all iRacers with license levels from Rookie through Pro, but as-of the start of Season 3, only sim-racers with Rookie through D-Class licenses can compete in the Rookie road (Mazda Cup) or Rookie oval (iRacing Street Stock) series.

It's Pontiac v Mazda, Solstice v MX-5 in the S3 inRacingNews Challenge.

This means that now rookies can compete against other rookies in an environment that should be more of a level playing field; this also means that there are now no C-Class, B-Class, A-Class, or Pro drivers present in the Rookie races to serve as mentors, leaders, or examples for those folks just coming into the iRacing fold, which makes this shift in license levels something of a double-edged sword.  Another potential downside is that iRacers at the C-Class license level and beyond who have in the past enjoyed racing the MX-5s and the Street Stock may feel a bit disenfranchised when they discover they can no longer join in to race in the Rookie series.  Another aspect of this change that may bring people up short is the fact that iRacers who drive safely and achieve a 4.0 Safety Rating and receive automatic promotions via the “Fast Track” promotion method may suddenly find themselves no longer able to drive the cars that they are probably the most comfortable with in the Rookie series.

All of this may make this rookie-level shake-up seem a bit jarring, but thankfully iRacing has made some allowances that will continue to make the Rookie cars accessible to drivers with advanced license levels, and most iRacers will probably come to the conclusion that the positive aspects of this change far outweigh any potential negatives.

One of the biggest positives associated with this shift in philosophy is the transformation of the MX-5 Cup and the iRacing.com Street Stock series into true “rookie” series, where beginning iRacers can learn the ropes, hone their racecraft, and race against sim-racers who are at roughly the same skill level as they are as beginners, thus providing a more level playing field for those folks just transitioning into iRacing.   This means that Rookies should now be able to just be “rookies” as they learn, without feeling pressured to compete with drivers who have higher license levels, and without that overwhelming feeling that you are being forced to compete with more experienced drivers from the very start.  This should hopefully make the Rookie ranks feel a bit more welcoming to new iRacers, while also allowing them to ease into the iRacing experience without feeling like they have been thrown into a shark tank at the very start.

The iRacing.com Street Stock Series is a "true" rookie series alternating between CMS and USA Speedway.

At the other end of the spectrum, iRacing has found new ways to accommodate drivers with advanced licenses who still want to race the MX-5s and the Street Stock by also utilizing these cars in advanced series with more stringent license restrictions, meaning that Rookies are prohibited from participating, thus giving more advanced iRacers a true “advanced” playing field where these cars can be enjoyed without the need to worry about sharing the track with races who are truly “beginners.”

The Rookie series themselves remain otherwise unchanged on both the road and oval side aside from the new license restrictions.  This means that the Rookie series schedules still consisting of the same familiar tracks that have been used in previous seasons:  Lime Rock and Okayama (Short) on the road side, and Charlotte Motor Speedway and USA International Speedway on the oval side.

The shake-up in the Rookie ranks also impacts the Advanced Rookie series on the road racing side as the inRacingNews Challenge Advanced Rookie series bids farewell to the SpecRacer Ford as it “graduates” to the D-Class level with the introduction of the new SpecRacer Ford Challenge series.  This reduces the inRacingNews Challenge series to a two-car multiclass series, with the Pontiac Solstice and Mazda MX-5 Roadster continuing on in their previous roles as the open-setup Advanced Rookie cars.

For those iRacers who have advanced past the D-Class license level on the road side, the right-hand-drive MX-5 Roadster will remain accessible via the Advanced Rookie inRacingNews Challenge series, and fans of the left-hand-drive MX-5 Cup version will be able to access that car in the D-Class Grand Touring Cup multiclass series.  To better accommodate the potential influx of MX-5 drivers with advanced licenses who can now no longer race in the Mazda Cup Rookie-class series, the iRacing.com Grand Touring Cup will also now feature an expanded four-day-per-week schedule for Season 3, with Sundays added to what was previously a three-day-per-week schedule.  This means that the Grand Touring Cup will now feature racing on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.

On the oval side, fans of the Street Stock who have advanced beyond the D-Class license level will be pleased to find that they will be able to access that car in the new C-Class iRacing Street Stock series, which will also feature caution flags, as compared to the Rookie Street Stock series does not use cautions.

These moves should help make the learning curve at the Rookie class entry level seem a bit less daunting for new members.  By transforming the Rookie series into literal “rookie playgrounds,” competition at the early stages should seem a bit more balanced for new members — as new iRacers find themselves competing with other new members who are still also just coming to grips with the various aspects of iRacing, the iRacing experience as a whole should hopefully seem like a more gradual, friendly, and less daunting proposition.

SpecRacer Ford has a series all its own in S3.

At the same time, by transitioning base content cars like the SpecRacer Ford and the Street Stock to be used at higher license levels in more “advanced” series, this also increases the inherent value of the basic iRacing membership.  Now everyone who joins will automatically receive cars as part of the base content package that can be used to run a partial D-Class road schedule and a partial C-Class oval schedule with no further purchases required.

So, with a few simple schedule tweaks, iRacing has succeeded in making the entry level portion of the iRacing ranks a bit more attractive to new members, while also transforming two of the base content cars into content that will allow greater accessibility to the higher license level ranks without the need to make additional purchases.

Well played, iRacing – well played.

Montoya takes pole at Pocono

Juan Pablo MontoyaJuan Pablo Montoya claimed pole position for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Pocono, setting an early benchmark that stood unbeaten for the rest of the session.

The Earnhardt Ganassi driver produced a time of 51.124 seconds, at an average speed of 176.043 mph, improving on the previous best set by Phoenix Racing’s Kurt Busch to claim his first pole since April 2011.

The Colombian was only the 16th driver in the order to set his qualifying lap but as track temperatures increased the fastest drivers of Friday’s sessions were unable to get close to their best from practice.

“It’s big, this is a huge boost for everybody in the team,” said Montoya, currently 21st in Cup points. “We’ve been working so hard and we really needed a little bit of light.

“We know we’re working in the right direction and we feel the cars have been getting a little better but to actually get out there and get a pole… I’ve seen a lot of long and stressful faces and we really needed something like this as a company.”

He added: “Do we have the fastest car out there? No. But qualifying is the same as racing. You’ve just got to make the right calls and do whatever it takes to get it done and that’s what we did.”

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin, who revealed on Friday that he is set to be a father next January, ran early in the order as well and ended up with a front-row starting position, ahead of Paul Menard, also an early runner, who was forced to a back-up car on Friday after an incident at the end of the day’s first session.

Hendrick Motorsports’ Kasey Kahne was the fastest of the late runners and got the fourth starting spot for Sunday ahead of Richard Petty’s Marcos Ambrose while Friday’s pacesetter and points leader Dale Earnhardt Jr was eighth ahead of Stewart-Haas’ Ryan Newman and Brickyard 400 winner Jimmie Johnson, who was fastest in the opening practice of the weekend.

Jeff Gordon, a five-time Pocono winner, was the only Hendrick driver to qualify outside the top 10 after slightly brushing the wall during his flying lap.

Mike Bliss was the fastest of the non-guaranteed drivers in 30th while Stephen Leicht failed to make the field.

Jason White got behind the wheel of the #32 car, replacing John Wes Townley who was originally set to drive it on his Cup debut, but crashed early in Friday’s opening practice session.

Tennessee Passat Factory to be a Blueprint for Most Future VW Plants

“Is this a GM town or a Ford town?” I ask the driver of our antediluvian Chevy Express as we enter an endless parking lot. A sea of pickup trucks and late 1990s Detroit tanks defines the landscape here as much as the lush tree canopies and valley. ”Both,” he drawls, while I’m stumbling out of the van. It’s humid as hell, and I’m schvitzing thirty seconds later. We’re in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the parking lot belongs to the plant where Volkswagen has been building Passats for the past year. Pickett duo keep winning in ALMS

Pickett Racing’s Lucas Luhr and Klaus Graf notched up their fifth consecutive American Le Mans Series LMP1 victory with a straightforward run in Saturday’s Mid-Ohio round.

Luhr and Graf’s HPD was only headed by the rival Dyson Lola-Mazda of Guy Smith and Chris Dyson during pitstop sequences.

In the other prototype classes, Christophe Bouchut and Scott Tucker won LMP2 for Level 5 as Bouchut kept the closing Conquest Morgan-Nissan of Martin Plowman and David Heinemeier-Hansson at bay, and a late fuel stop for CORE Autosport’s #06 car opened the door for Marino Franchitti and Rudy Junco to win LMPC for PR1/Mathiasen.

Corvette’s Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner took over the GT championship lead as they overcame the Flying Lizard Porsche of Jorg Bergmeister and Patrick Long to claim the race win by just 0.283 seconds. Gavin and Milner’s team-mates Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia lost their points advantage when a clash with a GTC car caused suspension damage. Until then, both Corvettes had been in the thick of the lead fight.

JDX’s Jeroen Bleekemolen and Tim Pappas appeared to have taken the team’s first GTC win, but a driving time infringement saw the victory handed to TRG duo Al Carter and Spencer Pumpelly.

Monsters of Grip: Nine Summer-Performance Tires Tested

Even armed with huge horsepower, wind-tunnel development, and a fear-free driver, cars wouldn’t be able to attain big speed without tires capable of  handling the inertial forces of 2700-plus rotations per minute. For this test, we gathered tires rated to sustain 168 mph or higher (which means at least a W speed rating). Though we didn’t test that certified durability classification, we did focus on the way these nine radials manage the lateral and longitudinal forces generated on a track or a great stretch of road. Defending Victor Ambrose Looks for Win No. 2 at The Glen

The No. 9 Stanley Team Rolls into Watkins Glen Looking to Repeat

CONCORD, N.C. (August 7, 2012) - Marcos Ambrose will return to the site of his first career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory looking for a repeat this weekend at Watkins Glen. Ambrose collected his first Cup win in dramatic fashion last season as he took the lead with just a lap and a half remaining. Known to many as one of the best road course racers in the business, Ambrose hopes to add win No. 2 to his resume at the 2.45-mile track on Sunday.

The Australian native heads to “The Glen” with an impressive resume, posting one win and four top-three finishes in his four-career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts at the Watkins Glen, N.Y., track. His average start is 15.2 and his average finish is 2.2. Ambrose has completed 100 percent of laps attempted (362), leading 38 of them. Ambrose also has three-consecutive wins in the NASCAR Nationwide series at the New York road course.

Don’t forget to tune into Sirius XM Radio on Channel 90, Friday, at 10 a.m. ET for the Morning Drive with Pete Pistone and Mike Bagley to listen to Marcos talk about racing at “The Glen” and attempting to win for the second-consecutive time.

Marcos Ambrose’s Thoughts on Racing at ‘The Glen’: “Watkins Glen is one of my favorite race tracks and it’s definitely been good to me in the past. It will always have a special place in my heart because it’s where I got my first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series win. It’s a track that suits my driving style, and I have a lot of success there in both the Nationwide and Cup Series. I have a lot of good memories from our win there last year, and I’m hopeful we can go out and win No. 2 this weekend. I’d like nothing more than to be climbing out of my Stanley Ford in Victory Lane at the end of the day on Sunday. My team has worked extremely hard the last few weeks and it would be a good shot of momentum for the second half of the season if we could pull off a win this weekend.”

Comments from Crew Chief Todd Parrott on Going to Watkins Glen: “The key to getting around Watkins Glen is having Marcos Ambrose as our driver. We have to make sure the Stanley Ford turns well and has good brakes. Brakes are always really important at these road course races, so we need to make sure our driver takes care of them the best way he can. We need the car to have good drive off of the corners and especially off of Turn 1. The biggest challenge we will face this weekend at Watkins Glen is making sure we stay on the race track and take care of the brakes and the transmission. Pit strategy will be key as this race typically comes down to two or three stops. Last year we had to make three pit stops because our mileage wouldn’t allow us to do it in fewer. This year we are hoping with the new EFI systems our mileage will be better and we will be able to make it in the preferred two stops.

“We are going into this weekend with a lot of high hopes and a lot of positive feelings. The team knows we can win there after our result last year, and it’s Marcos’ best road course. We need to make sure all of our ‘I’s’ are dotted and our ‘T’s’ are crossed so we can come home with another ‘W’ on Sunday.”

Chassis History:

The No. 9 RPM team has prepared chassis No. 772 for this weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race at Watkins Glen. This Stanley Ford was run previously this season at Sonoma.

Thanks to reader Jeff Prant for sending in these pics from the Midtown section of Saturday’s Summer Streets installment. I caught the tail end of the event, and turnout seemed as strong as ever.

If the forecast holds, it looks like this Saturday will be less hot and muggy. Which is good, because I think the thirsty crowd at the free Honest Tea booth on 24th Street was on the verge of rioting at one point.

If you’ve got photos of Summer Streets or the neighborhood-scale Weekend Walks events that you’d like to share, upload them to Flickr and add the “Streetsblog” tag.

Report: BMW pondering 3 Series assembly in Mexico

2012 BMW 3 Series - red - front three-quarter view

BMW is strongly considering adding a North American production facility in Mexico. That's according to an Automotive News report, which says the German automaker is looking at four potential locations for a new assembly plant to produce the 3 Series.

BMW officials say that tax breaks and incentives have made areas like the north-central Mexican state of Queretaro a top contender for the home of the 3 Series sedan and the next generation front-wheel drive 1 Series.

BMW's first North American plant, its Spartanburg, South Carolina facility, started with 40,000 to 50,000 units annually and has increased as the years went on. According to the report, the proposed Mexico plant would start similarly and eventually grow to 100,000 to 150,000 units annually.

For comparison's sake, while Mercedes-Benz will bring production of the C-Class to to Vance, Alabama in 2014, Audi has opted for Mexico for its first North American plant. According to the report, Audi admits Mexico's lower wages were a draw compared to the U.S.

U.S. production of BMW is still significant, and there's no reason to think that if a new Mexico plant were to come online that any production would be taken away from the German automaker's stateside operations. BMW built over 275,000 vehicles in the United States in 2011. That's a jump of 75 percent from 2010, and it's only set to grow. BMW says that the plant is set to produce over 300,000 this year.

Sauber relaxed about 2013 drivers

Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez, Sauber 2012Sauber CEO Monisha Kaltenborn says her team is relaxed about its driver line-up for next year and insists its main focus is on the current season.

Sergio Perez has been linked with rival teams after a promising second season in Formula 1, having finished on the podium twice.

The Mexican, who is a member of Ferrari’s young-driver scheme, has been tipped as one of the candidates to replace Felipe Massa at the Italian squad, although president Luca di Montezemolo said he lacked experience.

Despite such speculation, Kaltenborn says she is not losing any sleep over the situation with her drivers.

“We make our driver line-up for a whole season, so from that point of view there will be no changes,” she told the official Formula 1 website.

“We are not worried. And we are in the middle of a season that hopefully will be a successful one for us – at least all indications point in that direction – and our drivers have to focus solely on this season. Regarding the future, we are not under pressure and I am laid back about it.”

Kaltenborn also denied the performance of Kamui Kobayashi has dipped in recent races, saying the Japanese driver has been unlucky.

“I am not sure if it is really the case that his performance is dipping against Sergio. I think that the results do not show the whole picture. Kamui has shown good performances, but yes, he was a bit struck by misfortune.

“Twice in qualifying there were some hiccups with the car – only his car – and on the other hand the very risky strategy Sergio was running on in Malaysia bore fruits and catapulted him into the spotlight.

“So I would say that some factors played for Sergio – and some simply didn’t work out for Kamui. But as we still have half the season to go, Kamui can go out and copy Sergio.”

The Sauber CEO, whose team is enjoying a strong season, said she rated her drivers’ performance in the first half of the year as “satisfactory”.

“I would put on record that both show a good development curve. Never forget Kamui is in only his third season, and Sergio only his second.

They have established a good communication line to their engineers and to the whole team, and are always very welcome in the factory as their input is held in high regard.

“I also think that both are behaving well. Of course tempers can sometimes run a little wild, but that’s because they are young. So the interim report reads ‘satisfactory’.”

In Case You Missed It: Summer Streets Starts Tomorrow

Two words: Zip. Line. Photo: NYC DOT

Remember way back in 2008, when New York’s inaugural Summer Streets dominated the news cycle? By the time August ’09 rolled around, even Fox was on board.

With the first Saturday of its fifth season coming up tomorrow, Summer Streets is a lifestyle story — to the extent that it’s still considered news at all. Consider today’s preview in the Times, which is basically a summary of a DOT press release.

Not that the city isn’t keeping it fresh. Summer Streets 2012 will include football, a climbing wall and the feature everyone seems to be talking about: a 160-foot-long zip line. And if you tire of seeing all those relaxed New Yorkers enjoying seven miles of car-free asphalt, a truck will be on display to offer a view from the driver’s seat. Step up and watch the pedestrians disappear!

Park Avenue will be open to people from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. for three consecutive Saturdays.

Senna optimistic of securing future

Bruno Senna WilliamsBruno Senna is optimistic he will be able to secure his future at the Williams team if he continues to qualify as strongly as he did in the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Williams driver has struggled to match the qualifying performances of team-mate Pastor Maldonado this year, having only reached the top-ten shootout at the Hungaroring.

He built on that strong performance however, putting in a solid performance in the race to finish in seventh position.

The Brazilian is confident that if he can continue to qualify well, his future at Williams will be secure.

“The only reason why we scored good points like this is because we qualified well, and we need to keep on doing it,” Senna said.

“Everybody needs opportunities to grow up and this is mine. I need an opportunity to grow up and develop with the team. It’s probably the hardest season in Formula 1 for who knows how many years. With a tenth of a second you can be five or six positions up.

“In the races I think I’m doing pretty well this season. As I said before, nailing qualifying will be the key to make sure I stay for next year and hopefully the next few years.”

Senna believes the Hungarian weekend was his best so fat this season, and admits he feels much more comfortable about his position going into the summer break.

“I think so,” he said when asked by AUTOSPORT if Hungary had been his strongest weekend yet. “I think we had a strong weekend overall, and it’s important to keep on pushing like that. Definitely if I had come out of the weekend with a bad result or with poor pace, you come into the break with something in the back of your mind.

“I have nothing to worry now. I think we had a strong performance overall, and I’m learning, I’m improving and it’s going to be a case of chipping away and in the second half of the season I’ll have much more experience and everything helps.”

And the Brazilian is optimistic Williams can continue to make progress in the upcoming races, as the team knows what is the best direction for the development of its car.

“You need to keep pushing and improving. We know the team has potential. We know the direction to push the car for the next few races. There’s a clear development path.

“It’s just great to have car that’s a top-10 finisher pretty much every race and every time you don’t finish in the top 10 is mostly because of something else happened.”

Webber ‘bored’ by Red Bull rows

Mark Webber, Red Bull, Hungary 2012Mark Webber reckons rivals’ doubts about the legality of Red Bull’s cars are becoming ‘boring’.

The latest controversies over Red Bull designs saw the FIA issue a clarification about engine mapping rules following the German Grand Prix, and details emerge of a device that allowed manual adjustment of the car’s suspension.

“I think it’s incredibly boring for most people,” Webber told Reuters.

“All we can do is keep passing every single test and we have… it’s not a one-make series, you can design a car to the regulations and that’s what we do.”

Webber also believes rows over Red Bull gain more attention than queries about other teams’ cars.

“I know other teams have been asked to address things with their cars, but [FIA directives] are not for general consumption,” he said. “And some of ours do make the general consumption, which is just the way it’s been.”

He was adamant that everything Red Bull is doing is comfortably within the regulations.

“Whether it’s with the wings or whatever – and there’ll be something else I promise you that will pop up – we will always pass every single test,” he said. “Not one single team has protested us, because they know it’s within the rules.”

Some rivals feared Red Bull was set to resume 2011-style domination when Sebastian Vettel pulled away from the field prior to an alternator failure in Valencia and then Webber won at Silverstone. But the team was defeated in Germany and Hungary, and Webber believes the top teams are evenly matched.

“I don’t know who’s got the fastest car,” he said. “There’s always talk that it’s not the fastest car, but you need the most consistent one. I don’t think anyone’s got the fastest car at the moment.

“We did after Valencia and then Fernando [Alonso] had it at Silverstone until six laps to go and then all of a sudden we had it again. And then McLaren turned up for a few weeks. And Lotus.

“Kimi [Raikkonen] pushed Lewis [Hamilton] over the line in Budapest and before that we had Fernando winning with JB [Jenson Button] there and me in Silverstone. So it is up and down.”

Lorenzo says pole lap ‘almost perfect’

Jorge Lorenzo, Yamaha, Laguna Seca 2012Laguna Seca MotoGP polesitter Jorge Lorenzo said he had to produce an “almost perfect” lap to beat the Hondas to first place on the United States Grand Prix grid.

Yamaha rider Lorenzo ultimately denied Casey Stoner the top spot by 0.074 seconds on his final lap – despite having been two tenths down on the Australian at the first split. Both men lapped under the circuit’s motorcycle record as they fought for pole.

“I did an almost perfect lap to get the pole position,” said Lorenzo. “I knew Casey and Dani [Pedrosa] wanted to get it. We have the pole position, and I think we have good pace for tomorrow.”

He added: “I pushed to the limit, especially in the last corner, I was at full lean and opened the throttle really soon.

“In my first two tries for a perfect lap there was a lot of traffic so I had to wait for the right moment. The important thing is tomorrow, pole position is nice but anyway the race is what counts.”

Lorenzo said he was still debating his tyre choice for Sunday’s race, as the variable climate at the California track this weekend had not only cost him practice mileage, but also made it hard to judge options for the grand prix.

“This morning we had some things to try, but we couldn’t because we could only do 10 minutes because the weather was foggy,” he said.

“This afternoon the qualifying was completely good weather and we could try the soft tyre on the rear. It’s very difficult to choose the tyre for tomorrow.”

GM Design: Lyon Out at Opel, Buick and Cadillac Boss Adams to Assume Duties Temporarily

David G. Lyon

One month ago, we reported on GM designer David Lyon’s imminent move to become head of design at Opel in Germany. Lyon was responsible for Buick and GMC design, GM’s interior design, and “global cross brand design.” Last week, Lyon’s tenure with GM came to an abrupt end. The circumstances suggest that his exit was neither amicable nor the result of careful planning on either side. We understand that Lyon was escorted from GM premises on Thursday. An e-mail issued by Ed Welburn, GM Vice President of Global Design, basically stated, “Effective immediately, David Lyon is no longer an employee of General Motors Corporation.” Read full story »

Lotus: No disappointment over Hungary

Kimi Raikkonen, LotusLotus boss Eric Boullier says his outfit has no reason to be disappointed at failing to win the Hungarian Grand Prix.

After another weekend when Lotus appeared to have the pace to triumph, Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean could not find a way past eventual winner Lewis Hamilton as they finished second and third for the second time this season.

But rather than rue the missed opportunity, Boullier says he is overjoyed with the job his outfit is doing, adding that the Hungary performance was better for his team than Bahrain.

“Both cars on the podium on a twisty circuit like this is good for the team and it is better than Bahrain, because we had a bad weekend at Hockenheim with Romain,” he said.

“The drivers had a good race and tried to catch the leader, but we knew this track would be very difficult to overtake.

“We are happy with qualifying, as we prepared differently for it, and it worked. So both cars were in the top five. If we can produce this for the rest of the season then we will be in the position to fight for the win.”

Although delighted with the points haul that has moved Lotus ahead of Ferrari in the constructors’ championship, Boullier does admit that there will be some frustration for his team if it does not deliver a win at some point this season.

“Obviously if we were second and third every weekend I would be happy, but in some ways it would be frustrating to miss something and not win a race. If we can qualify well we will be in a position to win.”

And although rival teams are now tipping Lotus to become a force in the championship battle, Boullier says that his outfit has not yet changed its target of simply improving on the fifth place it finished in last year’s world championship.

“Our ambition is the same: to be better than last year,” he said. “But if we have this pace every race then maybe we will revise our ambition.”

Ferrari eager for prompt RRA progress

Stefano DomenicaliFerrari team principal Stefano Domenicali hopes that progress can be made on finalising a Resource Restriction Agreement deal with the FIA before the next Formula 1 race at Spa, as talks continue to secure cost-saving measures.

AUTOSPORT understands that FIA president Jean Todt is making another push to try and get agreement from teams on a way for the RRA to be policed by the governing body.

Efforts so far have not been successful, with Red Bull and Toro Rosso both against moves to limit chassis spending while engine expenditure is effectively left free.

The FIA has already delayed the 2013 entry deadline until the end of September to try and get an RRA framework in the sporting regulations by then, and talks are expected to ramp up again after the summer break.

Domenicali said teams were awaiting final documents from the FIA on the matter, and was hopeful that something could be sorted by the Belgian Grand Prix at the beginning of September. One scenario being talked about is for the RRA to form part of an appendix to the sporting regulations.

“We are waiting,” explained Domenicali. “As you know, we have done many meetings with the federation and the teams, and I think that we will receive the final document for the final approval [soon].

“I don’t know what will happen during the break because some of the teams will go on holiday now and some not, so I hope to be more precise in Spa.”

The Physics Of: Monster Trucks

Since the moment when Missourian Bob Chandler jacked up his 1975 Ford F-250 and bolted on oversize tires to create Bigfoot, trial and error has refined monster trucks into true racing and freestyle-exhibition machines. Today’s monsters are built around tube-frame chassis and propelled by 1500-hp, alcohol-burning, supercharged V-8s. Their bodies are flimsy  fiberglass that may (or may not) suggest a truck, a dog, or a superhero.
