2013 Scion tC Release Series 8.0 Announced, Is Red

2013 Scion tC Release Series 8.0

Outside of the recent gifting of the fine-driving FR-S sports car to the brand, Scion’s usual paucity of anything resembling news is typically only disturbed by “Release Series” special-edition models like this one. The 8.0 is the second Release Series based on the current tC, which was redesigned for 2011. (You can read about lucky number 7.0 here.) As you may have surmised, it’s the eighth such model in the two-generation history of the tC nameplate. Read full story »

Algarve race postponed until 2013

Johan Kristoffersson, Audi, Imola SuperstarsThe International Superstars Series has decided to postpone its planned visit to Portugal until the 2013 season owing to the European economic situation.

The series had been due to race at the Algarve circuit on 16 September this year, but organisers have elected to postpone the date until next year.

Another circuit, which has not been announced yet, is set to take the Algarve circuit’s place during the same weekend as the event was due to take place.

Organisers said the decision was taken with a view to providing teams and drivers with a “more affordable option” from a logistical point of view.

Following the replacement round, the 2012 International Superstars Series will conclude with trips to Vallelunga, Italy in early October and Sentul, Indonesia one month later.

Alex Bowman Wins Third ARCA Race Of 2012; Fifth Of Career

Alex Bowman Wins At Iowa Speedway
Alex Bowman Wins At Iowa Speedway
July 14, 2012 – (Mooresville, NC) – Alex Bowman led 93 of 200 laps in his Manatts / St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Dodge at Iowa Speedway, to gain his 3rd victory in 11 races this season. He has amassed 5 victories in his short 13 race ARCA career. The 19 year old from Tucson, AZ, driving the #22 Dodge out of the Cunningham Motorsports stables, qualified second earlier in the day, after practicing in the top 10 in both of the practices. After the team threw “everything, but the kitchen sink” at the car in practice, crew chief Paul Andrews hit on a set-up that Bowman could work with.

Bowman picked up sponsorship from locally-owned Manatts, Inc., just prior to the race. Manatts is an industry leading heavy construction company that is family owned and operated. Until recently, the Manatt family also owned the Iowa Speedway. They were the builders and primary owners of the Iowa Speedway. Bowman commented about the excitement of sharing his Iowa race experience with the family who knew the track from its inception, “I want to thank JoAnn Menatt and Menatts, Inc. for coming on to help sponsor us, here at Iowa, a speedway that is very dear to them. I hope we can give them a great run and a different view of the race track.”

As the Prairie Meadows 200 began, with Bowman on the outside pole, he and pole winner, Brennan Poole went off into turn 1 and 2 side-by-side. The #22 quickly settled into his own rhythm, allowing the leader to pull away to a 5 second lead. With Bowman in second he radioed to Andrews, “I feel a vibration in the motor and the car is real, real loose.” This brought concerns to Andrews and the crew as they had contemplated making a motor change during the second practice session, earlier in the day because of some issues they were having. Lapping of the slower cars began quickly, with only 15 cars on the lead lap by lap 40. With 50 laps in the books, Bowman had dropped to third and continued to fight a really loose race car, ultimately falling into fourth by lap 62. Spotter, Richard Coleman kept his young driver focused on the task at hand. Many times when he could he hear Bowman’s frustration level escalate, he would remind him how important patience was. With his calming voice in Bowman’s ear, he would tell him, “We will be fine..there is a long way to go.”

As the leader blew a right front tire, Bowman took advantage of the caution flag to come into the pits for four fresh Hoosiers, fuel and a track bar adjustment to correct the loose condition. When the green flag dropped on lap 82, Bowman seemed to have a new lease on life, as he picked up second three laps later and made the pass for the lead on lap 87. The green remained out until lap 114, when the caution flew for a car into the wall, due to a blown tire. Andrews kept the Dodge on the track, as a couple of the cars in the top 10 pitted. When the green flag came out on lap 120, Bowman remained in the lead.

When the yellow flag flew on lap 127, Bowman radioed that the car “started snug in center…then got free” to Andrews. With this information, Andrews called Bowman in to the pits for 4 tires and fuel. With a nice stop by the pit crew, Bowman lined up 3rd on the restart since the two cars ahead of him had pitted during the previous caution. In three laps, Bowman had taken over the second spot, as caution returned to the track. With two quick cautions, green flag conditions flew over the speedway on lap 149, with Bowman second to nine time ARCA Series champion Frank Kimmel. Three short laps later, the crew heard Coleman say, “New leader…the 22!”

With Bowman on the point, 15 car lengths ahead of second, the yellow flag was shown on lap 185. As Bowman told his crew, “That’s the last thing I wanted”, his crew certainly agreed with him, as they too were anxious for the checkered flag. With a perfect restart on lap 192, Bowman took a 7 car length lead into the back stretch. But, this was not the final restart of the race. On lap 197 of the scheduled 200, a spin in turn 2 caused the yellow to fly for the final time, resulting in overtime. Once again on the restart, Bowman made it through the gears flawlessly and had commanded a 3 car length advantage over Grant Enfinger in second. With the white flag in the air, Bowman’s crew held their collective breath, until they could see the black #22 come into view off turn 4, heading to his 3rd checkered flag of 2012. For the Cunningham organization, the win is the 3rd in four years at the Iowa Speedway, with the team not entering a driver the fourth year.

After an impressive burnout, (something he is getting pretty good at), Bowman drove the #22 into the Pizza Ranch victory lane, where the celebration began. The excited winner said, “I want to thank everyone at Cunningham Motorsports, Paul Andrews, Kerry Scherer, Briggs Cunningham, everybody at Penske Engines,” Bowman said. “We had great horsepower all night, but almost ended up changing a motor. We had a couple little problems, and we had a little bit of motor trouble throughout the race, but Paul Andrews had the car dialed in enough to make up for it. It’s a really cool night.

“Hopefully, our bad luck stops from here on out. We won Winchester and went to Jersey, and had New Jersey won, but broke something and finished 13th. To come here, we could have had three in a row, but two out of the last three races, I definitely can’t complain. I’m not a points racer. I’m here to win every race the rest of the year. I think I have every opportunity to win nine more races this year. Cunningham Motorsports, we have the best people and we bring the best race cars. Paul Andrews is the best at what he does, so I don’t expect anything less than to show up to the race track and definitely have a chance to win every week.” The win locks Bowman into a three-way battle for the championship; currently in 3rd, 75 points from the lead.

The Ansell ActivArmr 150 at Chicagoland is the next race for Bowman and his Cunningham Motorsports team. Practice for the 100 lap event at the 1.5 mile speedway takes place from 7:05-8:35 EST Friday. Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell is scheduled for Saturday at 10:30am EST, with the race beginning at 5:00pm EST. The 150 miles will be covered live on SPEED, with coverage of all on-track activity on twitter @cunningham_race. Follow Alex on twitter @AlexBRacing.

Whitmarsh: FIA must be part of F1 deal

The FIA has extended the closing date for 2013 entriesFormula 1 teams and the sport’s commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone must ensure that the FIA is part of the Concorde Agreement when it is put in place for the start of next year.

That is the view of McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh, who believes that grand prix racing would benefit from having the kind of tripartite agreement that it has operated under for a number of decades now.

“You can have a purely commercial agreement [between the teams and Ecclestone], but if you are competing in the FIA championship then if you don’t have a tripartite agreement it can be inherently confusing,” Whitmarsh told AUTOSPORT.

“I think it would be good to have an agreement that involves all the teams, the commercial rights holder and the FIA. I hope we will work towards that.”

Whitmarsh’s comments come in the wake of suggestions from Ecclestone that the framework of a new Concorde Agreement could be different, with teams rather than the FIA laying down the regulations.

The way the current negotiations have unfolded – with Ecclestone trying to get all the teams signed up before pushing for agreement with the FIA – is also a departure from how things were done in the past.

Whitmarsh does not see any reason why Ecclestone will not involve the FIA in a final deal, however.

“In the past, the mechanism of negotiations was a simultaneous process that meant we all came together and signed. But that is not how some teams and the commercial rights holder have tackled this. It has been done in an incremental manner.

“Most of the teams are signed, those that have not signed are close to signing, and I think Bernie feels he is close to signing the remaining teams and signing a deal with the FIA – and we have to loop that together into a common agreement.”

Huttu Wins Silverstone Strategy Battle

Round Nine of the iRacing.com World Championship Grand Prix Series played host to the digital version of the Williams-Toyota FW31 at the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit, and it was Greger Huttu claiming the spoils of victory with his sixth win of the season. In a strategy battle with championship rival Hugo Luis, the 2010 champion sailed to the finish line with an eight-second advantage.

Starting from pole after turning a qualifying lap of 1:19.651, Huttu maintained his position at the front when the lights turned green, with Luis sitting in his wake. Planning a two-stop strategy, the Finn eaked-out a seven second lead before heading to pit-road on Lap 20 for the first time. Electing to run with a heavier fuel load, Luis continued his way around the 3.2 mile Grand Prix circuit for an additional five laps  Despite a clear track ahead of him, the Brazilian saw his deficit to Huttu grow to nine seconds by the time he had visited the pits.

Huttu was in top form, leading all but five laps en route to his sixth win of the season.

“I tried my best to get a good start but it was not enough to attempt a pass on Greger,” Luis admitted post-race. “He drove away in the first stint and I was quite slow, looks like my strategy was not one of the best ones.”

Although Luis pegged the gap to Huttu at eight-seconds for the second stint, the defending iWCGPS champion was unable to make any serious inroads on the point leader. By the time they’d both made their final stops, the margin was still eight-seconds with 15 laps remaining.

Slicing his way through the lapped traffic, Huttu saw-out the remaining laps, unfettered and unchallenged, to take the chequered flag seven-seconds ahead of Luis.

“The start was good and allowed me to keep the lead and pull away early on.” the Team Redline principle shared. “For a moment I thought Hugo was on a one-stopper but that strategy would have needed a miracle to work so I was pretty confident that I was in a good position. In the end he was four laps heavier on fuel and that allowed me to build an 11-second gap.

“After my first stop I was stuck behind Matthias (Egger) for a couple of laps but then he went in for his stop and I had some clear track in front of me. Hugo went for a shorter stint so the gap closed down a bit, but I knew I’d have a shorter pit stop than the first time around and also would be OK pace wise on the last stint.”

“I knew I’d have a shorter pit stop than the first time around and also would be OK pace wise on the last stint.” — Greger Huttu

After stealing third position from Team Redline stable-mate Luke McLean at the green flag, Atze Kerkhof cruised to his third podium finish of the season. Although McLean gave chase for the opening 10 laps, an unforced error through Bridge Corner, sent the Australian into the barrier and out of the 60 lap race. This gave Kerkhof the breathing space he needed to stretch his legs, and head to pit-lane with a one-second advantage over the fourth placed Jeremy Bouteloup – a gap that was extended to seven-seconds by his second stop. A flawless run to the flag secured the Dutchman’s third position at the line.

“Jeremy was behind me doing great lap times, so I couldn’t sit back and relax too much.” Kerkhof explained. “Out of the pit I gained some time on him but I didn’t push enough to get in front of Hugo. So the second stint I was behind him. Lucky for me he sailed away on much lower fuel so there wasn’t much dirty air.

“Greger was far ahead, Hugo was gaining 0.4s per lap and Jeremy was far enough behind to settle down. Didn’t want to throw this away by making mistakes so I just drove there to finish the race.”

Luis and Kerkhof joined Huttu on the podium.

After making an opening lap pass on Jake Stergios through Stowe Corner, Bouteloup found himself in fifth position behind McLean, who soon handed him fourth spot with his incident at Bridge. The Radicals Racing sim-racer was then trailing in Kerkhof’s wake, but after taking his first service, the Frenchman found himself baulked by traffic and losing time to third place. Resigned to settling for fourth, Bouteloup maintained a consistent pace to keep a fleet of cars at a safe distance behind him, and secure his third top-five finish of the season, with six-seconds in his pocket.

“The race was quite uneventful, but I won’t complain since I’m taking the fourth spot home,” Bouteloup told inRacingNews. “The Radicals car was just perfect and the work done all week long paid off. So big thanks to the team for helping me to get the maximum of the FW31. Too bad the race of my team-mates went bad as they also had the possibility to do something good.”

In one of the fiercest battles of Round Nine, Ilkka Haapala edged-out Stergios to secure fifth position at the finish. Glued to Stergios’ gearbox for the opening laps, the Orion Race Team pilot made a daring pass on the American through the Becketts complex, to take the spot ahead of the first scheduled stops. After taking service, the Finn remained ahead of Stergios, by a slender 1.5 seconds, a gap that remained once they’d both completed their final visits to pit-lane. Although Haapala struggled in the closing laps, he managed to keep Stergios at bay, and the pair took the flag separated by just three-tenths of a second.

“All-in-all a very interesting and tough race for me,” Haapala explained. “Finishing position might not have been the best, but the battle with Jake all race long was hard and good fun. Top-five is good for points as well and our whole team showed great pace in the race.”

“All-in-all a very interesting and tough race for me.” — Ilkka Haapala

Whilst Roland Ehnström lost a position to My3id’s Martin Krönke as the field pulled away from the start line, the Scandinavian was able to mount a comeback, and retake the seventh position through Stowe Corner, a handful of laps later. From there, however, the Team Orion sim-racer was unable to muster a serious attack on the field ahead, so saw out a lonely charge to the finish line for his sixth top-ten finish of the season.

For Krönke, it was a case of ‘what might have been.’ After dropping his spot to Ehnström, the German was further demoted to his eventual ninth place finish when Matthias Egger took eighth spot through Copse Corner as the My3id sim-racer recovered from a ‘moment’ exiting the turn. After fending-off the continuous advances of Pablo López for the majority of the race, Riku Alatalo finally broke clear in the closing stages to secure his first top-ten finish of his début iGPS season by 16 seconds.

With seven rounds of the iRacing.com World Championship Grand Prix Series remaining, Huttu’s lead atop the standings is extended to 52 points. Continuing to trail in his wake, Luis on 324 points, will be hoping the Finn slips-up as the pressure mounts. In the tightly packed battle for the third and final cash-paying position in the championship, Stergios (232) has extended his lead over Ehnström to six points, with Kerkhof trailing by a further 33 marks.

Round Ten of the championship heads to Philip Island.  Will Huttu maintain his formidable charge to his second iGPS crown, or will the ‘Flying Finn’ reveal a chink in his armour that enables Luis needs to get back on level terms? Tune-in to iRacing.com/Live on July 21 (14:00GMT) to find out.

2013 Mercedes-Benz A-class Driven, Portends Good Things for U.S.-Market Derivatives

2013 Mercedes-Benz A200

Fifteen years ago, Mercedes-Benz saw room below its traditional portfolio of rear-wheel-drive sedans for something different. A car tall but short of length, with power routed through the front wheels and provisions for alternative powertrains, and with styling that wouldn’t tick the usual Benz boxes but instead would be funky and contemporary. The A-class was the result. (more…)

King Wins Chaotic Dover

Earlier this season’s NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship, Kevin King looked poised for a win at Phoenix International Raceway before contact on a restart late in the race sent him spinning from contention. This time at Dover International Speedway, there was no late-race drama and King capitalized on the opportunity to take his first NiSWC victory of 2012. King started from the pole, kept his nose clean, worked his way back to the front after making an early final pit stop and pulled away from the field after teammate Patrick Baldwin suffered damage to his Chevy Impala.

Pole-sitter King ran up front most of the race and scored his first win of the season at Dover.

“The car was an absolute rocket ship, and once I lost all the spots on pit road I knew it would be a bit tough, but I just tried to be there if they made a mistake and it paid off,” said King. “I managed to get the pole, which was a surprise, and I was pretty excited for the race. I hate that Pat got small damage that destroyed his car.  We were going to have a nice battle for the win I think, and although seventh isn’t what he wanted it’s still a good finish.”

Jon Adams finished second after leading 60 laps. While he was strong all day, he could not keep-up with King on the long run as Adams’ car was too loose off the corners. Nick Ottinger finished just behind Adams in third, NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series driver Jason Karlavige finished a very impressive fourth and point leader Ray Alfalla rounded-out the top five, continuing an extremely consistent defense of his 2011 title.

Brian Schoenburg rebounded from an early pit road miscue to finish sixth ahead of Baldwin who somehow finished seventh despite being damaged after having had the dominant car much of the race. Michael Conti, Byron Daley and Thomas Lewandowski finished off the top ten.

As usual, the Monster Mile produced fierce racing. Here Alfalla (2) and Adams (84) battle for the lead ahead of King (29) and Ottinger (05).

The first half of the race was filled with yellows, as drivers struggled with grip on the track known as the Monster Mile. Eight cautions slowed the field for 32 of the first 103 laps. As always at Dover, single car accidents are rare due to the steep banking in both the corners and straightaways. This led to many crashes claiming multiple cars, which thinned the field. Only 22 of the 40 starters were within two laps of the leader at the finish.

The race appeared to be Baldwin’s to lose as he built a healthy lead once the field restarted for the final time at Lap 104. However, he had problems getting around a lapped car, nearly spun, and made slight contact with King, damaging his car while King escaped unscathed. This allowed King to build a lead that proved to be insurmountable

King did have a tense moment when he had to pit for fuel under green, as many cars had 15 to 20 laps more fuel on board. Had another caution occurred before these drivers pitted a final time, King’s chances for the win would have been dealt a setback, but everyone made it on and off pit road without incident and the yellow never came out.

Baldwin (52) led a race-high 77 laps before late race contact dropped him to a seventh place finish.

The win helped King gain on those in front of him in the championship hunt. Alfalla continues to lead the points, holding a comfortable 20 point cushion over Conti. Ottinger gained a bit of ground with his third place effort, but is still 41 points back of the lead. Although King is still fourth, he trimmed his margin to Alfalla to 56 points, while Baldwin completes the top five, 85 points behind.

Week Twelve of the season brings a unique challenge: Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The flat, 2.5 mile oval was not built with stock cars in mind, yet has been the site of some great online racing the past two seasons in the NiSWC. Alfalla was strong at The Brickyard last year, so it is up to the rest of the contenders to make sure he does not extend his already comfortable lead. With only six races remaining in the 2012 season, time is running out for those sim-racers who would dethrone the champion.

Derani tops wet first Masters practice

Pipo Derani F3 Masters ZandvoortPipo Derani put Fortec Motorsport on top in a wet opening to the Masters of Formula 3 at Zandvoort.

The Brazilian left it late to set his fastest time, only moving to the top of the timesheets in the final 10 minutes of the session as he got down to a 1m46.909s.

Until that late effort times had fallen throughout the session, with top spot swapping hands several times as a consequence. No one was able to better Derani’s time however, leaving him 0.182s clear at the front of the field.

Carlin’s Will Buller, who won in similarly adverse conditions last weekend at Silverstone in GP3, was the early pacesetter when conditions were at their worst. He eventually finished the session second fastest, narrowly ahead of local hero Hannes van Asseldonk (Fortec) and Prema Powerteam’s current FIA European F3 Championship leader Raffaele Marciello.

The Italian’s team-mate Daniel Juncadella and Carlin’s Carlos Sainz Jr also finished within eight tenths of Derani’s benchmark, having taken turns at the top of the timesheets earlier on in the session.

Felix Rosenqvist was also in the mix in the first half of the session, although he dropped to seventh by the end, just under one second behind Derani.

Conor Daly, making his F3 debut with Double R Racing, rounded the top eight. His best, a 1m48.143s, was more than one second down on Derani.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG Instrumented Test: Unique Engine, Special Car

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG

To some, a special engine can make a car special. An NSX owner will happily tell you that his engine has titanium connecting rods. The Corvette ZR1 has a special viewing window built into the hood to help generate conversation. Those driving an SLK55 AMG of the latest vintage may not know it, but the 415-hp V-8 tucked under the roadster’s hood might very well be the most special engine in Mercedes-Benz’s lineup. (more…)

Report: Next Nissan Z will be smaller, lighter

2013 Nissan 370Z - red - profile

Nissan is reportedly hard at work on its next-generation Z. According to Inside Line, designers are already churning away on a concept version of the 2015 Z that may bow at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show. The report notes that Shiro Nakamura, head of design for Nissan, says the new Z will be both smaller and lighter than the current 370Z.

The model will also be geared toward a wider audience, and Nissan may be investigating the possibility of ditching the tried-and-true 3.7-liter VQ V6 for a turbocharged four-cylinder, a move that would almost certainly help fuel efficiency. The current Z is saddled with a lackluster 26 mpg highway, and strong early sales of cars like the Scion FR-S certainly indicate certain buyers are willing to drop a few ponies for a machine that's engaging to drive and at least somewhat fuel efficient.

Blasphemy? Maybe, but the thought of an engaging, lightweight turbo four sports car is the stuff dreams are made of - it's the "wider audience" part of the discussion that has us concerned as enthusiasts. A smaller Z would likely mean abandoning the Z's FM platform which also underpins machines like the Infiniti G Coupe and Sedan as well as the FX softroader. Inside Line says Nissan may turn to its corporate partner Daimler for some help in the chassis department.

Lotus drivers penalised for GP2 clashes

Esteban Gutierrez GP2 SilverstoneBoth Lotus drivers will be demoted 10 places on the grid for the first Hockenheim GP2 round as punishments for clashes in the Silverstone sprint race on Sunday.

Saturday race-winner Esteban Gutierrez clashed with Johnny Cecotto on the final lap at Silverstone, hitting the Addax driver as he rejoined the track at Stowe amid a late battle. Gutierrez went on to finish fourth, a result he keeps, while Cecotto was out.

Gutierrez’s team-mate James Calado gets his penalty for colliding with compatriot Max Chilton at Silverstone, ending both their races.

The Lotus pair are currently third and fourth in the championship, Gutierrez 36 points behind leader Luiz Razia and Calado a further 19 points adrift.

Ryan Newman Accomplishing the Mission at New Hampshire – Again

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (July 11, 2012) – “Mission Accomplished.”

That’s what Ryan Newman and the U.S. Army ROTC Racing team did last July at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon when the team took a dominant racecar from the pole position to victory lane. While it was Newman’s second victory since joining Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) in 2009, it was his first in the U.S. Army Chevy.

Since sliding behind the wheel of the Soldiers’ racecar for the first time at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February 2009, Newman had asserted his desire time and again to get the U.S. Army Chevy in victory lane and to win a race for the more than 1 million Soldiers who protect and serve our country.

While Newman had come close to winning in the U.S. Army Chevy on numerous occasions, he had never captured that top spot until last July. But just like the U.S. Army Strong Soldiers that Newman and his team represent, they never quit and refused to give up.

Newman carries a badge of honor in the star of the U.S. Army logo that adorns the chest of his uniform and the hood of his racecar. Each week, he would strap on his helmet with a renewed sense of determination and desire to get the Soldiers to victory lane.

Finally last July, when the checkered flag waved at Loudon, Newman & Company were able to say, “Mission Accomplished.”

After earning the pole position in qualifying, Newman went wire to wire – driving from his No. 1 starting spot to victory lane. The win that day helped secure Newman a spot in last season’s Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship and served notice to his competitors in the garage that he and his No. 39 team were both determined and daring when it came to completing their mission by winning the race.

During that July race, crew chief Tony Gibson made a gutsy call to keep Newman’s superfast No. 39 Chevrolet out front rather than pit under caution. Only once during the 301-lap race did Gibson call for a four-tire change. In the end, after Newman pitted for the final time on lap 217, Gibson spent the final 84 laps urging his driver to save fuel at every opportunity.

The bold call paid off and landed Newman in victory lane for the first time in 47 races. Newman led six times for 119 laps, and it was just the fourth time that he had won from the pole position.

The win was all part of a banner weekend for SHR. Newman and his teammate and team owner Tony Stewart started 1-2 and finished 1-2. The last time a team started 1-2 and finished 1-2 was Hendrick Motorsports in the 1989 Daytona 500. However, the last time a team started 1-2 and finished 1-2 with the same drivers in the same order was back on April 7, 1957, at North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway, where DePaolo Engineering’s Fireball Roberts won from the pole while teammate Paul Goldsmith started second and finished second.

As the Sprint Cup Series makes its first trip of the season to the 1.058-mile New Hampshire oval this weekend, Newman and the No. 39 team find themselves in the midst of a tight battle to earn a berth in the 2012 Chase for the Championship via a wild card spot. Newman is currently 15th in points.

Newman knows that to make the Chase and fight for the championship, the team must carry momentum from last weekend’s fifth-place finish at Daytona and maintain that strength on the racetrack for the next eight races. While his one win earlier this season at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway puts him in contention for one of the two wild card spots, solid performances and a second victory would go a long way to help Newman’s cause.

And perhaps there’s no better racetrack for Newman to get that second win and help him on his way to the Chase than New Hampshire. In 20 starts at the flat, paper-clip shaped track, he has a track-record six poles, three wins (September 2002 and 2005, July 2011), six top-fives and 13 top-10s.

With Newman and his Gibson-led race team in the midst of a hotly contested battle to make the Chase, expect the U.S. Army ROTC Racing team to take a page from its U.S. Army counterparts, where its Soldiers put the mission first and display a never-quit attitude and a refusal to accept defeat.

While the ultimate goal is a spot in the Chase, this weekend’s goal for Newman & Company is a return trip to New Hampshire’s victory lane. Once there, he would love nothing more than to make the simple declaration, “Mission Accomplished.”

RYAN NEWMAN, Driver of the No. 39 U.S. Army ROTC Chevrolet for Stewart-Haas Racing:

Describe what it meant to you to accomplish your personal mission by getting the U.S. Army to victory lane at New Hampshire last July?

“We’d tried so hard for two-and-a-half years to get the U.S. Army in victory lane. We’d been close, but we hadn’t been able to do it. It was disappointing because it’s a very personal and honorable thing to represent a million Soldiers, and we wanted to make them proud by getting their racecar into victory lane. When the checkered flag waved and I realized we had finally accomplished the mission of getting the U.S. Army a win, I was so happy. If it weren’t for the Soldiers who protect and serve our country, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do. Carrying the American flag in my racecar after that win was very special and something I will never forget. I hope we can make them proud again this weekend.”

You have six poles and three wins at New Hampshire. What makes you so good at New Hampshire?

“That’s actually kind of funny because I used to say New Hampshire was my least favorite racetrack. But it’s far from that now. It’s still not my favorite racetrack, but I really look forward to coming back there each year. New Hampshire has always been a good place for me. I’m not 100 percent sure why. It’s the place of my first win, and when I hadn’t won in a long while, 70-some races, I won again there. Last July, we were able to qualify and finish 1-2 at Stewart-Haas. So, I really look forward to it, obviously. For whatever reason, and I still don’t know the answer as to why, I enjoy Loudon. New Hampshire was huge for our team and even bigger for our organization. I don’t know that I realized how big until the next day when I was doing interviews and someone told me the stat about the last time a team started 1-2 and finished in those exact positions. As much as I study the history of this sport, I was stunned by that stat and was really honored that I was part of something so big. We made that race ours. All the guys came together and made it happen. And I’m just really proud of what we accomplished.”

Why did you say New Hampshire was your least favorite racetrack?

“Loudon has just always been a difficult track to pass. And from a racecar driver’s standpoint, you want to go out there and say that, if I have a good car, I can go out there and start last and win this race. And you can’t always do that there. That’s just a rule of thumb and generic explanation for why it’s not perfect. Other than that, it’s short-track racing. It’s fun but it’s really difficult to pass, at times, there. It all depends on the tire they bring and how good your car is. To me, personally, I feel like I’m competitive as a driver at all the tracks but, obviously, it takes a good crew that understands the car and the track and strategy and everything else. We’ve just done well there. It’s clicked.”

What are the keys to running so well at Loudon?

“I think this track is the key place when it comes to being aggressive and patient all at the same time. There is a different style of driving that you have to have there. You can’t really be overaggressive at this racetrack. It’s kind of a combination of patience and aggressiveness. You want to take what the car will give you because the track is flat. With banking, the faster you go, the more it pushes the car down into the racetrack. We don’t have that there, so it’s just a matter of feeling that razor-blade-edge of grip and getting everything you can and I’ve been successful at it there. It’s kind of clicked with me since the beginning. I really like the racetrack and obviously know how to drive it, which is a big part of it. It’s a good place to start up front because it’s a short race, and it’s not the easiest place to pass.”

Assess where you are at this point in the season.

“Finishing the race at Daytona was so big for us on a lot of levels. I would like to think it will give us some momentum heading into this final stretch before the Chase. Loudon is a place where we at Stewart-Haas have done an awesome job in the past. We look forward to going there. The stretch going into Indy and, obviously, the Chase, it’s important.”

This weekend, you have the Army ROTC on your hood. Talk about that.

“I always say what an honor it is to represent a million Soldiers but, for me, it’s especially cool to carry the Army ROTC logo. As a college graduate, I value the importance of that education and, in my role with the U.S. Army, I talk to a lot of high school students about how valuable that education is. It’s special to have the Army ROTC on the car because the ROTC provides the youth of our nation multiple educational and leadership opportunities.”
