The latest version of the experimental DeltaWing racer will run on Bridgestone tyres, it has been confirmed less than two days before the car is due to test for the first time.
The DeltaWing’s switch from Michelin to Bridgestone tyres has been an open secret for the past two weeks, but the move was finally made public today (Monday) at the same time as the car’s new livery was revealed.
Two days of testing are scheduled at Road Atlanta on Wednesday and Thursday before the car is shipped to Sebring, scene of the American Le Mans Series opener on March 16.
The car is due to test at Road Atlanta in the hands of Andy Meyrick, who will race the car at Sebring with Olivier Pla, and Johnny O’Connell, who worked with Price at Panoz in 2000 and tested the DeltaWing last October.
Pla is unavailable because he is taking part in a Michelin tyre test at Magny-Cours with his full-season employer OAK Racing.
The radical DeltaWing, which filled the 56th entry reserved for a car showcasing green technology at last year’s Le Mans 24 Hours, has swapped tyre and engine suppliers after Michelin and Nissan chose not to continue to back the programme.
The two-litre turbo engine has been produced by team boss Don Panoz’s Elan Motorsport Technologies around the architecture of the IMSA Lights class Mazda powerplant. The unit uses the head from the donor engine, but the block is all new.
