Turvey relishing sportscar chance

Oliver Turvey McLaren Formula 1 test driver Oliver Turvey is eager to establish a sportscar racing career after securing a European Le Mans Series drive with Jota alongside his F1 and GT duties.

Turvey has not had a full season of racing since GP2 in 2010.

The 25-year-old will lead Jota’s ELMS LMP2 assault this year.

Winner of the 2006 McLaren AUTOSPORT BRDC Award, Turvey took victories in British Formula 3, Formula Renault 3.5 and GP2 Asia before joining McLaren.

“You progress through single-seaters and I had a very successful career,” said Turvey on the AUTOSPORT Stage with KX at AUTOSPORT International.

“I’ve been very fortunate to join McLaren and be one of their test drivers for the last three seasons.

“I’m really happy working with them but I want to go racing and get out on track. The opportunity to race in LMP2 with Jota Sport came up and I think it’s a fantastic opportunity.”

Jota is hoping to receive a Le Mans entry, with Turvey optimistic he can fight for an LMP2 class win on his debut in the 24-hour race.

“I think outside Formula 1 it’s one of the biggest races out there,” Turvey said.

“It’s a race I’ve followed for many years and certainly one I’ve always wanted to race in.

“The opportunity to go there this year is a great one and hopefully we’ll have a team capable of winning it.”
