The series was forced to slash its 2013 calendar to just four triple-headers due to a lack of drivers committing to the championship.
At the same time the FIA has launched an expanded European Formula 3 championship of 10 rounds, which will support the DTM six times, World Touring Cars twice and the FIA World Endurance Championship once.
FIA single-seater commission president Gerhard Berger said the move was designed to “restore the Formula 3 European Championship to its former status.”
Carlin believes British F3 has in contrast been neglected by the governing bodies.
“I think it’s very sad,” he said.
“Obviously British F3 and F3 in general is very important to us as a team, but the fact is there’s a lot of championships out there at the moment, and British F3 has survived so long because of the teams.
“You also need support from the industry and motorsport governing bodies to maintain a championship and I think British F3 has been a bit neglected there.
“Hopefully this will just be a one year sabbatical.”
Carlin drivers have won the last five British F3 crowns, with three drivers – Jaime Alguersuari, Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne – all progressing into Formula 1.
