Chaves gets Schmidt Lights seat

Gabby ChavesFormer GP3 racer Gabby Chaves has joined reigning champion team Schmidt Peterson Motorsport for the 2013 Indy Lights season.

The Colombian, who finished runner-up to Jack Hawksworth in last year’s Pro Mazda championship, will be the Briton’s team-mate as the pair embark on their first season in the series.

“After a strong season in Pro Mazda, the best way to continue my career is by following the Mazda Road to Indy ladder and stepping up into Indy Lights,” Chaves said. “And there’s no better way to make that move than with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, a championship-winning team.”

Team owner Sam Schmidt said that he hoped that rivalry between the pair would help to bring the best out of both.

“[Chavez] has a very strong desire to get to the top level in racing and understands what it will take to get there,” said Schmidt. “I also think pairing Jack and Gabby as team-mates will work well to push both of them to the front of the grid.”

Schmidt Peterson Motorsport has won the Lights title six times, with its recent IndyCar signing Tristan Vautier securing the honour as a rookie last year.
