FR3.5 open to future UK return

Silverstone Formula Renault 3.5 2012Formula Renault 3.5 is likely to return to Silverstone in the future, despite the 2013 calendar not featuring a British round.

Next year’s nine-round calendar includes races at Monza and Spielberg in place of Silverstone and the Nurburgring, while the European Le Mans Series will be on the support bill at three rounds.

But Renault Sport Technologies CEO Patrice Ratti told AUTOSPORT that a British round in particular will be under consideration every time the FR3.5 schedule is put together.

“It’s nothing against the UK or Silverstone,” said Ratti. “There is no fixed plan, but I am sure Silverstone will be back.”

This year’s British FR3.5 round was a support race to the Silverstone 6 Hours World Endurance Championship event, rather than part of the popular World Series by Renault package that offers free tickets to fans.

That decision was down to the fact that Renault UK is currently allocating its budget in other areas, but Ratti added that championship organisers would still look for events to support to get a British round back in the future.

“This year Renault UK backed other things, like Goodwood,” he said. “That is why we had a support race with the WEC, and no World Series meeting.

“We like Silverstone, but we also like Monza and the Nurburgring. This year we had Silverstone, next year we have Monza, maybe the year after it’s Silverstone again.

“It’s not fixed; it is a question of looking at the calendar each year, and we want to be able to give our drivers a view of different races and circuits.”
