Morbidelli withdraws from finale

Gianni Morbidelli has decided not to take part in Sunday’s two International Superstars Series races at the Pergusa circuit in Sicily.

The Audi Sport Italia driver suffered from two shock absorber failures during Saturday’s free practice and qualifying sessions, the second of which prevented him from setting a time in qualifying.

According to Morbidelli, the failures were a result of the extra weight the Audis carry to limit the advantage of their four-wheel-drive system.

“Short weekend in Sicily: I am packing up and going back home,” he wrote on his official Twitter account straight after qualifying.

“Shocks broken in [free practice one] this morning and again in qualifying. It’s frustrating!

“At the ultra-quick Pergusa venue you’re done if you cannot jump over the current kerbs. With the current RS5 weight our equipment can’t survive.

“If you can’t match the power of others and moreover you’ve got to skip kerbs, the right figures on your lap will not add up. Sorry for [my] fans.”

KMS’s Johan Kristoffersson was the only Audi driver to set a time in qualifying, the championship leader booking 14th on the grid with a lap that was 4.529 seconds slower than the pole time set by Mercedes driver Raffaele Giammaria.
