Maldonado admits Q3 chances slim

Pastor Maldonado, WilliamsPastor Maldonado admitted that Williams currently has little chance of getting back into the top 10 in Indian Grand Prix qualifying.

The squad endured its least competitive performance of the season so far in Korea a fortnight ago, when Maldonado and team-mate Bruno Senna qualified 15th and 17th respectively, and finished 14th and 15th.

Maldonado was confident that Williams would be in better shape in India, but he was only 17th on Friday afternoon, 2.3 seconds off the pace.

“Today the pace wasn’t quite where we want it to be for qualifying so we will have to work hard and analyse where we can improve to give us the sort of one-lap pace that will get us into Q3,” he said.

Despite his qualifying worries, Maldonado believes Williams will be capable of moving up the order in the race even if it starts down the field.

“Our long runs continue to be strong though, like they have been all season, so that’s encouraging for the race itself,” said the Venezuelan.

Senna was 10th in practice two, while reserve driver Valtteri Bottas had taken the same car to 11th in the morning.
